Luxury isn’t really luxurious anymore. Terrible quality, awful service, ridiculous pricing plus with everyone struggling financially can most people justify buying the latest ‘it bag’ then discarding it when the next one comes along. Plus with the increase in crime is it even safe to wear labels? Quiet individual style and just enjoying what you already have seems to be the way forward. Great video as always Sophie sweets ❤❤

Yes, I agree for all the same reasons. I don’t wear ‘icons’ because they reflect the brand, not ME! I love beautiful things, lovely things that will last many years and reflect MY style, not the brand. I remember in junior high when we all HAD to have the same boots, sweater and jeans to feel cool and everyone looked like cookie cutter images of everyone else. Haven’t we grown out of that? Everyone wearing the same ‘iconic’ items is boring and predictable. Express yourself with your very own beautiful style and be your OWN icon! Unique, individual and fantastic!

When I was much younger and cared way too much what people thought - I walked into a sushi restaurant with my *esluxy* . A group of girls were at a table and were laughing. I immediately assumed they were laughing at my fake bag. Looking back, I'm sure they weren't as it was a brilliant copy. So, moral of the story - please don't spend too much time worrying about what others think of you. In reality, they are far too concerned about themselves and probably feeling just as insecure as you are.

The biggest killer for Speedys and Neverfulls was the number of normal people (like me!) carrying them! The Balenciaga horror caused an obliteration here in Australia. For over a year their boutique was virtually empty. I never saw a single client in there. Now I see a limited number in there when I go by. But they are decimated. The Lsdy Dior may still be iconic but it is over priced, like the book tote! If I had a Lady Dior I would use it but feel no temptation to buy one. Exploitating kiddies is particularly awful. Which does not excuse exploiting vulnerable adults either. Thank you for the video.

The truth of the matter is that these bags are all overrated. Now that we know that they cost a fraction of the sales price and that they have horrible practices, it is blaringly obvious that they are not worth it. Also, so many of these items are so copied. There are so many dupes - good dupes that they are not really luxury anymore. LV is kind of the worst of it.

Her couture house closed in 1939, with the outbreak of World War II. Chanel stayed in France and was criticized during the war for collaborating with the Nazi-German occupiers and the Vichy puppet regime to free her nephew from a prisoner of war camp. To secure his release Chanel began a liaison with a German diplomat/spy she had known before the war, Baron (Freiherr) Hans Günther von Dincklage.[5][6] And following her nephew's release, she collaborated in minor ways. After the war, Chanel was interrogated about her relationship with Dincklage, but she was not charged as a collaborator due to intervention by her friend-British prime minister Winston Churchill.[7] When the war ended, Chanel moved to Switzerland, returning to Paris in 1954 to revive her fashion house. In 2011, Hal Vaughan published a biography about Chanel based on newly declassified documents, revealing that she had collaborated directly with the Nazi intelligence service, the Sicherheitsdienst. One plan in late 1943 was for her to carry an SS peace overture to Churchill to end the war.[8] HOW IS CHANEL ICONIC?

My relatives in law got me a Van Cleef &Arpels necklace in 2012 and I had never heard of the brand before. The Alhambra clover was so tiny that I nearly fell of my chair when I sneakily googled the value 😅❤ My in law family are Japanese so they like tiny, delicate and easy to overlook but yet super expensive gifts. Side note* interesting backstory ~ The Alhambra jewelry collection by Van Cleef & Arpels is a talismanic design that symbolizes good fortune and good luck. The collection was created in 1968 and is inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, which is known for its many archways. The design resembles four overlapping circles of Moorish quatrefoil decorations, which are traditional signs of good luck, and can also be described as a four-leaf clover. The name comes from the Arabic term al-qal'a al-hamra, which means "red fort or castle". ❤

I think what killed these brands, or certain models, is the fake handbag market. Once upon a time, it was possible to buy fake handbags only from the trunk of a car in a hidden alley in New York for example. Today, the counterfeit market has become so sophisticated - that it is almost impossible to distinguish between an original handbag and a fake handbag. Regarding the Balenciaga bags - I personally did not like them, there is something a little cheap about them. The Lady Dior bag will always be iconic, and nothing will ruin its image

Hi Sophie. Very interesting video. I have several LV bags and Chanel and Hermes purses. All from the early 00's. All purchased pre loved. I think they are all wonderful because they were manufactured before things went crazy on social media and certain brands, definitely LV began over producing new styles of bags. Also, they were all from a time before fakes started to appear everywhere. All my items are now vintage, which I think makes them iconic. I don't see many of today's items being classed as such 20 years down the line.

To me luxury is something you buy once. The quality is of such excellence you use it for the entirety of your life. I bought my Chanel, LV, and YSL bags in the mid 70’s and early 80’s when I lived overseas. I was 16 & 17 and bought them with my babysitting money. I was taught you only get a few nice things in life and to buy classics of great quality. I have carried six handbags all my life. Now we over consume; that is what has killed iconic pieces. Over consumption, buying every trend makes pieces tiresome.

The bags may be older but that’s when the quality was outstanding. I’ve never liked Balenciaga. Hope they go out of business. That campaign was unforgivable 🤮

I'm happy to see the Alexander McQueen scarf mentioned. Here in America we have the Nordstrom Rack and I saw numerous colorways of the scarves in their luxury cases in the late 2010's sold at a discount. I didn't see many being worn. Personally though, I stopped wearing mine once the pandemic began. The skull motif went from edgy to eerie in my consciousness. I've worn it a couple times now lately and I get positive reactions. I still think twice though. Great video as always.

I don't really follow trends that much - I don't mind if I'm the only one wearing something, if it's something I love! Funny you talked about seeing queues, as I hardly see any, and those I have seen over the past year are really only at LV or Gucci stores.

I am a Dior fan who’s now questioning myself. I don’t think Lady Diors are made in the sweatshops because the news said the ones that were made there retail at $2000 euros. Lady Diors are priced way beyond. However, I was debating whether to get a book tote the other day, and a question came to my mind “is it made there?”, which put me off and I walked away. I found myself struggling nowadays, with all the things going on in luxury. Buying luxury handbags is my hobby. I usually buy one to celebrate a special occasion/achievement, and enjoy all the happy memories I created while using them. So even though they are just bags, to me they are always associated with positive emotions. Knowing they might come from sweatshops, where people are abused, definitely destroyed the experience for me. And I especially can’t understand luxury fashion houses on one hand keep raising the already high prices and exploit their workers on the other (even fast fashion brands can’t exploit their worker, but at least they have a”reason” - they need to control costs super carefully). In fact, I stopped buying fast fashion all together because of the poor working conditions many of their employees might be enduring. Never thought I would end up at the same place buying luxury.

Unfortunately at this point and forward I will be doing a lot of research before purchasing luxury. The crap quality, the ridiculous prices (thanks to Tanner Leatherstein we know what these things are really worth) and the terrible working conditions they ignore just to fulfill their greed. I refuse. It’s really getting gross.

Yes, I love your nails!💕. Years before their fall I loved the Bal city bag and was so excited when I found one preloved in the color and with the hardware I wanted. I carried the bag for about six months and realized it didn’t work for me. It was too puddly and drove me nuts. I gave it to my daughter and she was thrilled with it. I like the medium Lady Dior, I may or may not get one someday but it isn’t top of my wish list. Sophie, what I said in your other video still stands. I don’t think this is unique to Dior. The next one in the media may be LV or Gucci or Goyard or name any other brand. I think for the immediate future design houses may be more aware of what’s happening in their supplier warehouses. So for everyone right now, the Dior controversy may benefit workers for all design houses, luxury or mainstream. I love the skull scarf🖤

So I talked to my husband about this since he bought my dream lady Dior for Christmas last year. He said “where do you draw your line? Do you know who made your clothes? What about your iPhone?” His point was that shady stuff happens in all of these industries. Am I going to stop using my phone knowing a child probably made it? What about unethical mining used for chips? Not saying any of this is right but it does make me wonder. I’m giving my lady Dior a break but I love her too much to never wear her again. As far as fakes go, at least DHgate is pretty transparent in their manufacturing practices… unless that’s all staged too lol.

I agree with your hubby. We don’t know how most of our items or clothes are produced. Well, my unpopular opinion is. ... there has been very little ethics involved with fashion. That fashion brands are NOW expected to adhere to some version of ethics is new… it’s a new fashion trend! And I think the brands are trying to figure out the new mode. It’s been all about sustainability and “clean” for the last 5 years? The globalist production process has to include China in some manner. So I bet many of the brands have production practices that include Chinese labor somewhere in their lines. When I look at purses that are produced by independent companies or makers, purses that have a similar design and leather, a close dupe, or especially a super fake, I look at the price point. They are often from $150 up to around $300. $500 to a $1,000 for a high end style or an exotic. These producers are STILL making a profit. That gives me an approximate profit margin. That profit has to of course pay for luxury store fronts, salespeople and expensive marketing, fashion shows and art directors. I often ask myself- If the bag I like didn’t have all the hype and surrounding fashion glamour and I hadn’t seen it in a swanky shop, and it cost a tenth of the price, would I still want it as badly? The fashion conscious are fickle and the “it” trend reverses quickly and abruptly. Even the “big brands” are finding this out.

You cannot know if every product you own was made ethically or not, but if you know that particular brand is unethical, it should then be easy to know where to draw the line. It’s not like you have no other options, or that the particular bag is crucial for your survival. It’s not a perfect method, but you do what you can.

Harper's Bazaar magazine, literally, has the Louis Vuitton Speedy ranked as 1 of the all-time classic handbags that will never go outta style at this very moment! Sophie is entitled to her opinion, but I am going to assume that she must rarely see the LV Speedy and Neverfull handbags in the part of the U.K, where she lives. They are Louis Vuitton's top 2 selling handbags! And you can Google that. I'm not just saying it. They will always look chic to carry. I see plenty of both and own both. To be truthful. I need to reach for them more. I have so many handbags in my collection that some go a while without being used, but I will never rid myself of my LV and Speedy. They are simply timeless.

I kind of have a soft spot for Louis Vuitton and I don’t think the Speedy for example will ever not be iconic. It might not be as desired anymore because of the fakes but it’s such a classic shape that so many people have copied, the Speedy is the blueprint. I also don’t think VCA and Cartier have anything to worry about, Hermès money is child’s play for much of their range so most of their stuff stays exclusive by necessity.

Sophie, I can confirm that in northern Italy Balenciaga bags, more precisely the "motocycle" or "classic part-time" ones, are very fashionable and I myself wear mine. Even in second hand or vintage there's a good demand for this type of bag. By the way, I recently saw a photo of Nicky Hilton wearing his Balenciaga motocycle... so it seems to me that even in America they don't make a big deal about it. As for me, I bought it with my hard-earned money and so I wear it. But I believe that for consistency, if a person decides not to wear Balenciaga anymore, they should make the same reasoning for Dior, slavery is not something less serious, you have to be consistent.

People are entitled to their own opinions, we're not gonna all share the same opinion and that's what makes us interesting, if everyone agreed with everyone about everything it would be such a boring world, so embrace your opinions, it's exactly that, your opinion, STOP apologising for it. I find it more off putting when people apologise for having a opinion that might be different from others, than not agreeing with them. Plus I find it more authentic when people aren't following the crowd, if people don't like it, they don't have to watch. This is why I love @EricasGirlyWorld she just dont give a damn, that's why I find her genuine compared to other influencers who are just trying to please everyone, which you can't do, somesone will always find something to be offended by

I think people forget that YOU make luxury goods look good, luxury does not make YOU look good, and by YOU, I mean the collective YOU. However, having said that, these days, very rarely do I see a woman carrying a hideously expensive bag, who has any actual style. All I see is a woman and think “oh she has 8k to spend on a bag”…and I guess that is the flex, but it is a perverse one. I do own some luxury pieces, some battered Gucci bags which I’ve had for eons and some Tiffany jewelry I’ve collected for years, but now I’d prefer to have bags made to my specifications from leather smiths, shoes also. I’m not willing to pay 1000’s for something which cost $40 to manufacturer, I know the game and am wiling to pay for a name, the advertising, the craftsmanship, the models et al, if it’s a name I can still respect. Those names are dwindling fast. The tide is turning, the IT bags of the moment are a Mini Trader Joe’s cooler bag and $30 Uniglo one, I forget its name, but I love this trend back to sanity.

Getting the same bag that’s crazy expensive in 10 different leather and hardware variations? It’s no longer special and I almost feel guilty about wasting 3-5k on a bag. With the economy I can no longer justify the expense and honesty I no longer crave it. I’m in my 50s now and I’d prefer to have that money for retirement and investments. It’s hard to be relatable when you spend over 10k plus on luxury that you see influencers spend. While enjoy watching I’m over it and have moved on to other influencers. I really love your taste and style always so chic. My faves would be the *esluxy* leather backpack and the Swarovski pave diamond ring so gorg. Thank you for your recommendations.

Hi Sophie, I would add the classic Burberry pattern to this list. It was so elegant and classic until fakes started showing up literally everywhere and on every kind of items (for example I found tissue paper with that print once)

i think that the dior scandal is just the tip of the iceberg - i think if someone were to dig, they'd find the same thing at many designer houses. corporate greed just really has no boundaries.

Ahhh! The McQueen scarf! I so wanted that when I was in uni, but couldn't afford it. I had the H&M dupe (and still do lol). But tbh I still want the McQueen one just to have it, though I don't know if I'd even wear it so I've held off.

I remember looking at Vogue magazines when I was young and just dreaming about having all the lovely things in life..material things but when youre young thats seems important. I loved the Van Clef and Arpels jewelry. Nowadays, it does seem not as special when you can buy a knockoff at the corner city street. The 1980s was all about the brands and labels. Nowadays it seems a different vibe here in the US. People are all watching how they spend and name brand handbags are not the thing from what I observe. I girl can still dream😊
