Thanks David!
Interesting Phil - since I switched from guitar to ukuleles, joined a band, and started doing songs that I'd never even considered learning (having been a totally unreconstructed folkie up to that point) I was surprised to see how many songs are based on that sequence, or something approaching it. I'd never heard of it referred to in terms of ice-cream though. I first learnt of it from a jazz trumpeter, and sometime piano player, who managed the music shop in my home town of Halifax, when I was sixteen, which, God help me, was almost sixty years ago now. He was called Louis Tait (pronounced 'Lewis' like Armstrong really was) and he introduced me to what he called the 'Blue Moon' sequence. Variations I've encountered lately involve substituting the relative minor for the Fourth - the Everleys' 'All I Have to do is Dream' switches between the two, apart from the middle eight. Thanks for clarifying it.
again a Masterpiece!👍
Thanks Phil. Really useful to see how the Circle of Fifths works in action again. Realise not just dry theory, but also a very practical concept to keep in the toolbox. Think I need to print it out and stick it on the wall when I am practicing!
Very good video. I knew Doo-Wop but I hadn't heard of Ice Cream changes. Thanks.
Awesome video, Phil.

Thank you - Thank you for simplifying things for us. And, for giving us an assignment to look through our own music books to see similarities. I think it will simplify transposing songs.
The usual Phil Doleman brilliant demonstration. Wonderful, and now I know even more why the circle of 5ths is essential!
Thanks Phil. Probably the first thing I learned to do on the ukulele (with my first song played being Octopus’s Garden).
Thanks, Phil, nicely explained.
Thanks so much Phil. You're really helping me to understand basic music theory. Best wishes.
I’ve never heard it as Ice Cream Changes, it’s always been the 50’s progression to me, because even though it’s used in modern songs, examples like Dear Future Husband and Dance With Me Tonight evoke that 50’s style

True, both of those are really, I think, deliberately 50s-style (particularly Dear Future Husband) both in chords and arrangement, but then Every Breath You Take comes along!
One variation I like is doing I vi ii V, playing the relative minor of the IV chord to give more gravity/pull to the V chord due to being a secondary dominant

Yes, that one is all through jazz music. One of the thoughts about the 'ice cream' name is that this one is a little simpler, 'basic' sounding. A lot of older jazz tunes have it as I VI7 II7 V7 too, a nice little circle of 5ths pattern.
A million thanks 😊
Thanks again Phil, really helpful. Trev
Man you make that bass look tiny. Thanks for sharing your input on Ice Cream Chords.
Thank you phil. This was quite good.
Well! I never thought I'd ever hear Phil Doleman singing a Justin Bieber song!

I tend to think about he rhythm of the song, rather than a strumming pattern, just as when I sing I think about the song, not the scale I'm using. I made a video on strumming that might help kzread.info/dash/bejne/apaHz7hvea3Xcrg.html
