The IBM 6780 Quietwriter: teardown and demo

Ғылым және технология

In whch yr hmbl svt takes apart, cleans, and then attempts to demonstrate his nice new IBM 6780 Quietwriter System/40 typewriter, a top-of-the-line typing implement from about 1985. It masses 15kg, has 96kB of RAM and even though the printing mechanism is indeed quiet, the superb keyboard is INCREDIBLY LOUD.
(Reupload --- I found a nasty rendering error in the original...)

Thank you for this. I have one of these but it the print head is a daisy wheel. Your print looks a little like a thermal print head but I can't tell for sure. This has been so helpful. I actually have several versions of these IBM / Lexmark machines. I love them all and they all work as intended but for this one. I think it just needs a lot of love and attention that I have not given it yet. This makes me want to get back to it. Thanks again.

Strange. The selectric has silent keyboard and loud type head. The Quiet writer could have been very quiet, but they installed a keyboard that is almost as loud as the type head of the Selectric! I have always really wanted one of these quiet typewriters, mainly because of the quietness. Although I love clicky keyboards, I think the wrong place for them is on a silent typewriter. Particularly if your purpose was to use it in an office with other people who are against loud machines such as typewriters. (although they are perfectly fine with Honda Civics with the muffler removed, and 150 decibel leafblowers running every day of the year). I wonder if there is any way to get a quiet keyboard to work on this machine?

I have a quietwriter 6750-3 which I use for daily correspondence (yeah, I’m oldschool). If you need supplies let me know. I got hundreds of ribbons (correctable, non correctable, high contrast, cleaning) and about 40 font cartridges :)

Does this make a sound when the typing head gets to the edge of the page, like an old typewriter did?

Great video! Just one thing: That's not the German version, but the Swiss! That's quite rare, so great find :)

I did figure this out eventually! Is not having an exclamation mark a Swiss thing rather than a German one? None of my Swiss word processors have one...

I think your mystery battery may be a CR12600 3V Lithium. (Varta CR-2NP)

Looks like it, yeah; thanks. That means the measured 3.0V was dead on. Surely that can't be the original battery from 1985, still working!

What does the keyboard have on Shift+1 if not an exclamation mark? My German Model M keyboard has the exclamation mark there, just like any other German keyboard I've ever used.... I'm a little bit confused now... Also, I'm confused as to why you wouldn't want to port CP/M or FUZIX to that typewriter 😀

Shift+1 gives you a +. It comes from 1985, the same year as the Model M itself, and I don't think standardising the layout was high on their list of priorities... re porting something, I would have to reverse engineer the expansion connector and build a storage device first! And sadly the machine is much too big to fit on my workbench, and that's the excuse I'm sticking with.

Technology Connections has made a video about this "liftoff" feature of mechanical typewriters. Perhaps this IBM model uses something similar? kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3lkt5JqaKbVoNo.html
