    I joined the AF at 18 right after high school. Spent 56 weeks in tech school after basic. People simply have no idea how much responsibility a young 18 or 19 year old on the military has. They deserve your respect.

    I USED to work for McDonnell Douglas on the C-17 project. I was in the FUSELAGE build area(the main fuselage, in a normal plane where passengers sit) the FLOOR is 70 FEET long, plus all related parts that are required. I was on that program for over 10yrs. It was the BUSIEST wildest time that i have ever had. Would do it again.

    For those wondering, built aircraft tires are considered a repairable item in the military, which is why you see the orange tags on them. Those tags are Ready For Issue tags, or RFI tags for short. They are built up from wheel halves, left and right, and the rubber tire, plus the bolts that hold the wheel halves together. Most of the time those bolts are one time use only. I worked with tires a lot over my 20 year Navy career, either storing the rubber, or ordering them for the squadron I was assigned to. AFAIK military tires are inflated with nitrogen, not air, because nitrogen doesn't expand & contract like standard air does. Also, tire pressures are higher when the aircraft are flying from aircraft carriers, because they take a lot more abuse. My EA-6B squadron would inflate the mains to 250 psi for flying off a carrier, and only used 50 psi on shore.

    Almost all tires in aviation get rebuilt...the rim's are NDT'ed, the tire is retreaded, etc....

    I sold tires including automotive, truck and small aircraft tires as a young man. What impressed me about the aircraft tires were the fit and finish and how stiff they were. The little tires were still 10,12 or 14 ply. I'm sure technology marched on since I did this almost 50 years ago.

    That is crazy wild how the different teams work on the tires. Repairing/retreading a tire is pretty wild too. Too bad that they dont do that to car and truck tires any more. They can use the aircraft tire retread program on those tires and make them stronger.

    Not sure airlines mandatorily remove tyres every 250 flights. Tyres are On-Condition items, not hard time components. Besides, tyres (& their service conditions) vary and many won't give up to 250 landings...

    The actual replacing the tire onto the rim is a nother job in itself. That unfortunatly they dont show in this vedio. Splitting the wheel and Having the rim cleaned and inspected X rayed for cracks Then mounting the new tire and testing in a safety cage.

  • @street-level
    @street-level Жыл бұрын

    There is of course a significant difference between a tire (on its own) and a tire, as mounted on a wheel, to be fitted to an airplane; yet the same word is used in the video.
