The Hypnotic Immersion of Cure

Фильм және анимация

Kiyoshi Kurosawa gave us a meditative chiller for the ages with 1997's subtly sinister, transporting "Cure." I discuss a few of the reasons it keeps me up at night.
Correction: 2:50 Character's name is Mamiya, not Mayima.

This is genuinely one of the most underrated movies of all time - There is so little written about it. I once watched it out of the blue without any pretext and it felt like falling down a void and there was no stopping it but to let it just suck you in. I have never since felt a movie do that to me.

I’ve definitely been unable to stop thinking about it/watching it since I first saw it. I was a fan of Kurosawa’s, but a western release of this was tough to track down until the recent Criterion. Needless to say, their transfer looked and sounded leagues better than the version I found on KZread.

The first time I watched Cure was just over a year ago. I was sky high on some edibles and had been down a rabbit hole of obscure Japanese films. The intro scene where the guy beats the hooker with the pipe was all I needed to see before being legitimately glued to the screen. The profound psychology, and hypnotising terror this film has will probably never happen in another film. I could watch this film over and over again and never be bored of it.

All amazing films very much in a similar vein. It’s interesting how much Cure and Se7en seem to be in conversation sometimes, given how close together they released

FIncher sited Cure as a an inspiration for Zodiac and Zodiac's main inspiration, the masterpiece Memories of Murder took major inspiration from Cure, which is one of Bong Joon-ho's fovourite films of all time@@WildFlicks .. All three movies are some of my favourite films of all time

@@themythicfire7560Cure is a masterpiece. MEMORIES is almost a masterpiece. Fincher though is so overrated it pains me. I never have an urge to rematch Seven or Zodiac. There's something lacking in those films that is present in Cure. Sure they all have elements of Dread. Thats about it.

Great video. I don't remember how I stumbled across this film a couple of years ago but it became my favorite movie almost immediately. Everything about it is so hypnotizing, from the cinematography and sound design to the way Mamiya acts and carries himself. Takabe was the perfect foil to Mamiya and the ending is perfect.

I watch this film for the first time last night. Mind you I'm completely exhausted and have been slammed with work for the last 3 weeks. I put this on to just have something to go to sleep too. Didn't happen. I sat up and watched this entire film. Quite possibly the best film I've ever seen

Yeah, I goofed on that one. I've been trying to get it in as a correction, but the feature still doesn't seem to be working.
