The Huron Carol - Eleanor Daley - The Choirs of Pembroke College/Anna Lapwood

Another choral moment for your Thursday afternoon... Eleanor Daley's setting of The Huron Carol is a new addition to our repertoire, and has proven to be an instant hit with our singers and congregations. The carol itself is Canada’s oldest Christmas song, thought to have been written in 1642 by Jean de Brebeuf. The original song was written in the native language of the Huron People, with the title ‘Jesus Ahatonhia’ (‘Jesus, he is born‘), and the melody is based on that of a traditional French folk song. I adore the way Daley writes for upper voices and we really hear that coming out in this arrangement!

I know this carol well. Being Canadian I learned it as a little girl and have performed it off and on in choirs all my life. I’ve even done a couple of arrangements. I’ve never heard it done so beautifully. Thank you. ❤🇨🇦

A beautiful, haunting carol, for sure. One of my faves. But so fun, to watch the eyes of your sopranos and altos. Anna, they worship you. They want to be SO like you. You are just a few years their senior, and YOU are their inspiration. Thank you, for giving them that excitement. And taking on the responsibility, of leading these young souls

Really captivating, great arrangement, and beautifully, very musically sung by fresh, young people - and behind that all is, of course, a very good choir-conductor. And still: very beautiful, inspiring place to sing with great, supporting acoustics, and a very good recording & sound quality! Christmas greetings from Finland 🎵 🎄

Nice to see Eleanor Daley's work performed; I sang for her in a church choir here in Toronto back in the 1980's and have sung her works in various other choirs. Great performance!

A good choirmaster and a good choir. Great ! But I was shocked at first. The leader looks like my math teacher 40 years ago. I knew even then that she would never die. Best wishes from Hamburg/Germany 😀

I'm assuming you are kidding about who wrote it. It was written by a Jesuit priest in 1643 as a way to bring the story of the birth of Christ to the First Nations of Canada in a way that they would understand. If you were being sarcastic, then whoosh for me.

Lovely! Well done. ..the only change I’d make is to have the women quieter on the second verse so the words from the men come through better. ..not a big deal since most people know the words anyway. Thanks for posting!
