Totally hear you on Middara! I got so excited when I first picked it up, painted everything, and played it pretty religiously for a few months. But finally got overwhelmed playing four characters at once, plus the added complexities as the campaign goes on. Had to give up finally because it started to feel like more work than fun. Love this list, thank you. Need to check out Adventure Tactics and Familiar Tales, and now I'm dying to order TftRDI.

Thank you for revisiting this list! I like to hear about the favorites among someone's favorite style of game. Dungeon crawls are in my top 2 or 3 favorite kinds of games as well. A few years ago I played games weekly and these days I'm lucky to play something once a month (parenthood, so it's a trade-off I'm happy to make). I still have enough hope that one day I'll be able to do weekly games again that I have Middara (with 2 more acts on the way) and Oathsworn coming as well.

It's their new upcoming game after their 2 successful Core Space KS campaigns (awesome sci-fi hybrid system between tabletop and boardgame). Maladum will have plenty customisability, awesome terrain, many classes to play with, progression, excellent multiplayer (but also solo and co-op it seems), and did I mention unparalleled terrain! Wow! You got me curious to look into a couple of titles I have never heard of before and others very little. This is quite a much different list than what we see around. I'll dig in a bit more because of you. 🙂 From your list, I just got my hands on the first 3 acts of Sword & Sorcery, so that might compensate a bit for Galaxy Defenders. I also own Adventure tactics and just received Tales from the Red Dragon Inn, because I love their universe! 🙂 So happy you rank it so high!! My favorite one is still Gloomhaven. My original group dispended after the pandemic, and now I'm working on creating a new group to tackle it again. Everything as been reset. We did play through JOTL recently, but life made it difficult to commit to the size of Gloomhaven, with that second group. I'm not in a rush, I'll get there eventually! We started a Massive darkness 2 campaign and are halfway through. I own many more, I only had Gloomhaven, but I was so excited and happy with the experience, and get similar feeling from playing Oathsworn, that I went out and got myself about a 12 of them. We'll start a new one in the fall. Hearing about your love of Dungeon Crawl, I was wondering what you thought about Aeon's Trespass, Chronicles of Drunagor and Hexplore it? Aeon's Trespass for me seems, magnificent, but the price tag slowed me down... Have you played them? If not, why are you not interested or is it just that they are on your list to try eventually. Thank you for all these new options, a couple of those will be added... Now, let's take a look at Wander... Never heard of that one before!!! 🙂

I was also interested and hesitant about hexplore-it, but manage to get th efirst base box and expansion, for half price... So I jumped on it, but it is quite an investment I can't make right now. Doesn't fit with any of my regular playing group.. But I'm working on building a new adventure group! And finally Drunagor, I'm attracted but he height system and the character development. I was hesitating between that and Middara... My wallet decide Drunagor should be the one to take... Middara will also be played, eventually. 🙂 Nice chatting with you!

Okay, okay, I bit... I am a huge DC fan after all 🤩 **Hellboy** - have you tried the Campaign Mode I designed for the game? Available on BGG files section 😉 as well as redesigned BPRD Case Files. **Aftermath** - I get it. Too many similar PH games edge the older/lesser ones out. **Gloomhaven** - also get it. Played the entire overarching story and...it kinda peters out. **Warcrow Adventures** eh? Interesting... 🤔 Did not get deep worldbuilding vibes of it. **League of Dungeoneers/Dungeon Universalis** I guess...not my style tbh. Too fiddly gameplay wise, too trope-heavy thematically. I need sexier mechanisms and more exotic themes. **Tanares Adventures** 🥳❤️🤘👍💯 GOTY still... Far superior to Gloomhaven with its cardplay, endlessly richer in story and worldbuilding. **Adventure Tactics** er, not really a DC now is it? 🧐 **Familiar Tales** guess I really oughtta take it out of shrink now...Huh **Oathsworn** er, also not a DC. 😋 Your list is more of a DC & BB Top 10 list 😉 **Barnacle Bay** This was high on my must have lost for the longest time, but then I saw the new expansion and for some reason I can't put my finger on, it just didn't grab me anymore. It just seemed...too simple, too done before. I dunno. **Dungeon Alliance** falls for me in the same group as DUN and Lod... OSR DC which feels too dusty oldschool to me **Tales of the Red Dragon Inn** still fails to capture my imagination. I think it's the art and graphic design that puts me off. It feels like GH bit less novel, and somehow too mechanical. But hey, at least you still have **Middara** on your list. Pure DC gold. Alongside Descent 2e/Legends, Mansions of Madness 2e, Skull Tales: Full Sail, Machina Arcana, Okko Chronicles, Solomon Kane, Sheol, Rise of Moloch, Core Space, Assassin's Creed, Vampire:tM Chapters, Mice & Mystics... 😅

We just finished a 2nd run through Oathsworn and the biggest criticism comes down to the narration. We love a good story, but they could have cut the dialogue in half because there are some sections where the narration just drags hard. Especially IIRC either Chapter 19/20. We turned off the app and just did the quick story mode after that. The group also didn't care for the directional build-a-maze elements as it often felt like choices didn't matter and you went through a lot of tile/page flipping just to hit the clock triggers. They really could have done away with that whole thing and just asked if you wanted to go to location A, B, or C knowing that you wouldn't be able to do them all.

For my first ever solo game I'm playing tales from the red dragon inn, initially just I could get my my group to play it faster once we got together. But right now I'm not sure if should just stick to solo play, because gameplay is kinda perfect so far. I like the dungeon, puzzle strategy on how to get the bad guys. It has a campaign and story, that works in solo but not so much in groups in my experience. On the other hand, our group played gloomhaven for a long time but just the idea of a 1 hour set up is keeping it from the table. So tales might also just be perfect to play as a group. So while in this group vs solo dillema I tried searching for similar boardgames that I might like for solo play i was really hoping for the nr1 to become my new holy grail... but I already had and am playing it. Guess I like a somewhat short campaign , dungeon crawl, but use your brain -puzzle gameplay, with card play, levelling up and or loot, maybe some choices in the story, set up should be quick. Game should take about 1-2 hours max. I want to say good night to my kids at 7:30, set up a game and be able to finish it and store it ar around 10:30, maybe play a scenario nr2 on weekends. Would love to know if more games like that exist? Jaws of the lion maybe? I own a lot of arkham horror too. Tried playing in group but it doesn't get on the table consistent enough to follow the story. Might switch to that to play solo. Recommendations are welcome.

The number 1 game is the one I’m sad I missed. I appreciate that you make a list with games that many people don’t review, some I never heard of. I wouldn’t put oathsworn as a dungeon crawler I think it’s a boss battler, if it is a dungeon crawler then you have to add aoen tresspass. I think that game is superior to oathsworn. One game you should put on the list is SHADOWS of Brimstone. If you get the all in KS and then some. Yes if you invest heavily into the game. And use the hexcrawl campaign. This is the number 1 dungeon crawler on the market. But it’s very time consuming and expensive. Well worth it.

it's my same opnion about gloom haven. that auto miss card is horrible to a low luck game. and the deck is shuffled for you can get it again. that game is a puzzle that each attack count to you don't lose, and has a auto miss card that you draw after you do all the math. change to -2 and +2 for the X0 and X2. and has many many things to mark and choose is impossible to play with all the rules 100% all the game. the digital game is so much faster with the AI controllingthe monsters that i think gloomhaven need a app to monsters attacks.

I have played it a few times. It's fun, but the putting together of minis, and huge amount of shelf space it needs (gotta have some expansions) makes it one that I would prefer someone else own, and I can play on occasion.

Oh oh oh. You make me want to get rid of all my games and just keep dungeon crawls. Such a great style of game and epic story telling How would I rate them all. Not sure I could get to 10 but the following would be my current top 5. Tanares adventures, big, beautiful and needing its improvements from the newest kickstarter 4. Legacy of Dragonholt. Yes old but new for me. Story telling, my favourite and what a story and set up. Such a shame its style was never continued. 3. Frosthaven. Yes, have played all the Gloomhaven campaign but now enjoying this with my playgroup. Looking forward to discovering the story. 2. Dungeon Universalis. My favourite by far from the classic style. Long term strategic planning, different engagement rules, shields matter, chainmail is amazing, so many character combos, cool magic and travel. Oh the travel. one map of nine out. second coming out. Love the campaign and setting my characters are travelling through. 1. Sleeping gods. Love the story telling and the replay value. Played 5 times already and wanting to solve unanswered threads and questions from these 5. Almost all five had surprising endings May try out some of your great games. My wallet hates you now. Me, I love your videos. Keep them coming. Do tell me more about your Dungeon Universalis adventures.

You know you can play Gloomhaven without the miss and critical cards for a less swingy experience. The manual says to treat them like -2 and +2 cards, respectively. Honestly I see no reason you couldn't just remove them entirely and just shuffle the decks when they run out.

I am aware. We played all the way through Jaws of the Lion that way. The need to implement a house rule (or variant) on such a core part of the game costs it "points" for me. However, the lack of story would still put it out of the top 10 for me. I'm ok with light story games, but if I'm gonna play 20+ games I prefer story. That said JotL would still be top 20.
