US Release Date: November 17, 2023
Starring: Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth
Directed By: Francis Lawrence
Synopsis: Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy Gray’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.

    People who haven’t read the book and know nothing about the story already complaining lol. The book is good, it adds layers to Snow’s character and turns him into less of a stereotypical villain. I’m just hoping they won’t mess it up because the book is too long to be adapted into a 2 hours movie.

    @@joneeeeeeel yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of… the HG adaption is one of the few that was done very well, sure, they had to cut sone things here and there and made changes that could be avoided (like Peeta loosing a leg, which was important not only to his character gut also to understand why Katniss was so protective of him in Catching Fire), but overall they were pretty good. They needed two movies for Mockinjay and the prequel is WAY longer thank the third book.

    @@thecaninefoodie I personally would read the trilogy first. But imo the prequel can probably be read before or after the trilogy, it is just a great insight to the history of the world and a character study. It's not as action packed as the trilogy is.

  • @orangejuice1876

    @orangejuice1876

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@thecaninefoodie I'm going to preface this by stating that it's been a little over a year since I've read this book, so it isn't super fresh in my mind, but I would say that you *can* read this before the other three if necessary. There aren't direct ties between this book's characters and the trilogy's characters, however there would be a few references that you may not fully understand. Now personally, I feel like you should read the others before this one. That way you have set knowledge of what the Games are, who President Snow was, etc BEFORE reading his whole backstory. Think of it this way: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a prequel, but not necessarily a prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy itself - Songbirds & Snakes tells Snow's story from years ago, but THG is all about Katniss in the present. If you were to read this book first, it wouldn't be a prequel to Katniss' story, it would be a prequel to Snow's story - and you wouldn't be reading Snow's perspective for the other three books. I would argue that if you read this one first, it would sort of destroy the buildup during the main three Hunger Games books, because part of the fun of those three was trying to figure out why exactly Snow was the way he was. Plus, this book provides an extended explanation as to why Snow had such distaste for Katniss specifically, so it's a bit more fun if you read this book last. (Sorry for the mini-rant, and I hope this helped, at least a little!)

    I’m interested how they will structure this movie. (I will give no plot details but if you don’t want to know even the story structure stop reading). Each HG book is divided into 3 parts. In the first the games was parts 2 and 3. In catching fire the games was just part 3. The games have always been the climax. But in this book, the games only take place in part 2. There is a whole third of the story afterwards. In both Hunger Games and Catching fire the games took up the last half of the movie. Movie 1 cut out details from the games and CF cut out a lot from before the games. This books 3rd act is like it’s own thing I’m really interested to see how it will play out as a movie

    Ooh that's a good point...I almost forgot that Songbirds and Snakes' Games didn't go until basically the end of the book like in the other three books! (I also won't go into too much detail in case someone who hasn't read it comes along) There's a part of me that wants them to split this into two movies like with Mockingjay, but that might be hard to do depending on where they cut it. Like, on one hand I don't want a book that's about twice the size of Mockingjay to be crammed into one movie, but on the other hand, I'm not sure what exactly they would do with a movie that just handles the last part of the book...I mean, the ending was interesting, but I'm not sure it's "entire second movie" interesting.

    I have been waiting for this to come out. Finished the book the week it came out. Ever since I read it I have hoped the one liberty they would take with the book would be to start the very beginning of the movie showing Donald Sutherland's Snow from Mockingjay when he's being held as prisoner in the rose garden and have him reflect back with him narrating. Then end the movie again with him narrating as he's being walked out to where he was 'supposed' to be executed. I'm not sure why, but I just loved his portrayal of Snow and would love for them to some how work in something small from him.

Hunger games tops it for me for its scintillating suspense and brilliant ending, ballad has incredible writing and just adds to the lore of the hunger games universe very well. Mockingjay is a fitting ending to the saga despite being a bit slow at times. And catching fire also heats up well in the 2nd half of the book but i just personally find the 1st half to be a little boring. It drags too much imo.

I hope they do the book justice in the movie, the trilogy went so well, I have high expectations for this movie, I hope I'm not let down.

    Am I the only one who’s not a fan of Lucy Gray being theorised as Katniss’ grandmother? Why do all characters in a universe have to carry a connection with one and other in order to be further legitimised? I feel the impact of the revolution etc. would be more powerful if Katniss was just a random from 12 (as the trilogy suggests) because it shows how the games and the tyranny affected the whole of Panem. Giving her relation to Lucy takes away from the mystery of her death (rendering the spooky song she was named after less spooky) and also makes the world of the revolution seem somehow like it was a personal affair drawn out over the span of many years between Lucy & Snow, when actually it was much bigger than that. The impact of a nation. But anyway, I say all that to say I hope that isn’t implied in the films as they will already have a few winks to work with (covey talking about the plant Katniss, the lake & the song) so I hope they don’t overkill it by adding that in. I am super excited for this film😭
