***** Well, first off the whole katniss/Peeta relationship is essential to the plot and overall message, but the triangle thing with Gale could have been left out, sure. I'm sure a part of it was because of PR and the love triangle trend in YA novels. I didn't find it to be too much in the books though. Partly because the way she experienced the whole thing seemed natural for a person of her age and circumstances. She wasn't doing it to have fun, nor was she locked away crying about what a difficult choice she had to make, nor was she pining over the boys. And there was always the possibility that she'd choose neither, she even says so in Mockingjay, when Peeta and Gale are talking about it. I also think it did give insight into Katniss' character, and her views, expectations of the world, her relationship with herself, what she thinks of romantic love and how that evolves in the books and what the role her childhood played in that etc. Her feelings about the boys have a lot to say about who Katniss is and becomes during these books. PLus,there is this whole metaphor to be made around Mockingjay especially, if you take into account Katniss being the personification of Panem(as some interpretations of the books support), and by extent if you interpret the triangle as Panem being a land that needs what both Gale and Peeta bring to the table but is also, by the end, torn between bloodlust(gale) and reconciliation(peeta)- especially taking into account what Katniss says in the epilogue about Peeta and Gale. They're also respectively what's expected of Katniss (miner/hunter from her class) and what's not(boy from a different socioeconomic class, whom she's supposed to resent and vice versa), and when you're trying to break from traditions of an oppresive regime, that choice carries a clear message too, even though she didn't choose Peeta just to be rebelious, but because she loved him.

BadBloodwillout I agree. I never even thought of it as a love triangle in the books, that was just what the media made of it (both ours and the novel's). I especially thought the ending was so strong, because even thought she did choose one it didn't end in a fairy tale wedding in the 'New Panem' but in a sort of apathatic search for normalcy and hope in a world that was still very much disrupted, shaken and fragile.

You know you've been in quarantine for two long when you can write out the lyrics to Katniss's song by heart just because you've listened to it like 25 times. lol

When ever I watch the movies now I think of theses songs. During Rue's death all I could think of is Stacey as Rue. 🤪🤪🤪

This makes so much more sense once I read the books

when I went to watch Mockingjay yesterday, & when Katniss went walking past every injured person in District 8's hospital, thought she was instantly gonna burst into song & dance, performing this.
