Katniss being a mother didn't mean that all women need children to be happy'. It meant something much deeper. One of Katniss's biggest fears was that one day her children might be reaped into the hunger games. That's why she vowed never to have children. Katniss having children, in the end, happened to symbolize peace. That everything terrible was over and people could live and love happily with no fear. It meant katniss could have a life of security and happiness.

Absolutely!!! And it also symbolises that Katniss ultimately chose to create life rather than destroy it. Remember she had to choose between Peeta and Gale. Gale she described as being "fire" while Peeta is "flowers in the spring". Life vs death, love vs hate, creation vs destruction.

@@Femmeaesthetic Its not that people are mad she has kids and a husband. Its more the explaination behind the marriage and kid. Alot of books and movies depict women having her happily ever after only after marriage or kids. It grows the ideology that a woman will only be happy if she is a mother or a wife when in fact women can be perfectly happy without being either. Its perfectly understandable that people feel angry over this fact but this is not something that relates to katniss's story.

@@lucykim513 indeed. A good way to decide whether a storyline is based on outdated gender norms is to ask, would this story still work if the genders were reversed? If Katniss were male, this story resolution would still work- evidenced by the fact that it's also a good resolution for Peeta. In fact, Peeta is consistently framed as a warm and nurturing person, who had paternal feelings and actively wanted children with Katniss (without forcing her, she chose to give him children because she loved him). So while you are describing a pernicious trope, the trope doesn't apply in this particular instance.

A while back, I saw a post on Tumblr talking about how Katniss and Peeta’s children aren't named and are simply referred to as “the boy” and “the girl.” They thought it was a good decision because, for years, every personal detail of her life was broadcasted to and known by everyone. Here, she decides “No, I won't let you know what I decided to name my children. You know everything else; let me keep this one secret.” And I couldn't agree more.

That time jump was probably the thing that annoyed me the most within the series. Like, they literally had two whole movies to fit the last book into and somehow they didn’t find the time to provide a resolution neither to several important character’s personal arcs nor to the fact that the rebellion‘s symbol just shot the rebellion‘s leader and everyone is just cool with that (?!). Like, we have seen the consequences for Katniss, but shouldn’t there be rioting in the streets? The rise to power of the next president after Coin’s death. Those are things that would have actually been interesting to see during those TwO mOvIeS Also couldn‘t they have shown some scenes giving us context for Katniss and Peeta literally having children now? I would have been cool with a montage. Just… something.

After all these years I still believe that the Hunger Games realistically portrays PTSD and the emotional aspect of finding peace as one of the best. The nightmares, the screams, the feeling of almost being completely numb and knowing you won't receive justice. It perfectly portrays the sheer horror in the eyes of Katniss and Peeta. Its the same look I've seen a hundred times before as a medic in the Gaza Strip and Mosul in 2014 and 2017. That look of pure despair when people lose family members but also the look of pure hope after reuniting with their loved ones, after we pulled them out of the rubble. The grey area where you see good people become bad people after their home is bombed by foreign countries. To either retaliate or find peace. This series bring that aspect forward really well. I met multiple women like Katniss and Prim in my life even men like Peeta and some of them died. I was invited to eat with their families. I've received gifts from their families and even flowers from children. Its hard to find out that you sometimes shared a meal with people that died shortly after. The pain becomes so agonizing that every memory, every image and even smell causes you too break down, to the point it feels almost impossible to eat, drink and even stand up. I like that in the ending of Mockingjay, we see them gardening, sitting in a field and listening to the rain. I do that as well in order to supress my memories. As dystopian as their society might seem, its not far off from the truth. After a while you realize that our politicians (Snow and Coin in their world) use Hollywood, the mass media and even games as a means to justify the chaos they have created over there. That they use it to invade countries, assasinate leaders, steal natural resources and not give back profits to locals, even classify documents of airstrike reports and vilify refugees. In most ficitional movies, there is also an element of truth. That's why I like the Hunger Games. For me its closer to the reality I've witnessed than it is to fiction. They did a great job in portraying those emotions and like you said "the cost of this" sometimes you have to experience an enormous amount of bad moments in order to know what its really like to experience the feeling of peace and safety.

This has so much more meaning after watching TBOSAS. Snow's flaw was that he ignored every kindness he witnessed and experienced in adopting Dr Gaul's philosophy that humans inherently turn on each other and need to be controlled. (Was that her philosophy? Didn't read the book.) Having seen people turn on each other in the Games, Katniss could have made the same conclusion, but chooses to actively remember and constantly count kindnesses to counteract that misaligned worldview. Amazing.

Harry: "Albus Severus Potter, you were named after two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin, and he was the bravest man I've ever known. Slytherin house would have gained a wonderful young wizard. But, if it means that much to you, you can choose Gryffindor. The Sorting Hat takes your choice into account." Katniss: "Did you have a nightmare? I have nightmares, too. Someday I'll explain it to you. Why they came. Why they won't ever go away. But I'll tell you how I survive it. I make a list in my head, of all the good things I've seen someone do. Every little thing I can remember. It's like a game. I do it over and over. Gets a little tedious after all these years, but there are much worse games to play." Newt: "Dear Thomas, this is the first letter I could remember writing. Obviously, I don't know if I wrote any before the Maze. But even if it's not my first, it's likely to be my last. I want you to know that I'm not scared. Well, not of dying, anyway. It's more forgetting. It's losing myself to this virus, that's what scares me. So every night, I've been saying their names out loud. Alby, Winston, Chuck, and I just repeat them over and over like a prayer, and it all comes flooding back. Just the little things like where the sun used to hit the Glade at that perfect moment right before it slipped beneath the walls. And I remember the taste of Frypan's stew, I never thought I'd miss that stuff so much. And I remember you. From the first time you came up in the box, just a scared little Greenie who couldn't even remember his own name. But from that moment you ran into the Maze, I knew I would follow you anywhere, and I have. We all have. If I could do it all over again, I would, and I wouldn't change a thing. My hope for you - when you're looking back years from now, you'll be able to say the same. The future is in your hands now, Tommy. I know you'll find a way to do what's right. You always have. Take care of everyone for me, and take care of yourself. You deserve to be happy. Thank you for being my friend. Goodbye, mate. Newt."

Katniss being a mom wasn't to add fairy tales and babies and none of that stuff in the end but rather to balance off her pain and to finally be able to have a family. If you truly think about it she never had a family. She had a mom who neglected her and was more weak and in need of her than the other way around meaning she had to be a mom for her sister without even being able to be a child. Then she lost her father which I think was the image she held onto as bravery when life got tough on her. I think having the family was a way to put her off the trauma and survival mode state she was constantly in
