The Human Back Is A Design Disaster - Cheddar Explores

Everyone who lives long enough is likely to experience back pain. And the cause isn't just aging. We have evolution to blame for a spine that's an engineering nightmare. Cheddar Explores how our spines changed to accommodate human bipedalism.

    Donkey Kong Well no actually. We didn’t evolve to reproduce. Organisms reproduce because they feel the need to perpetuate the species. And doing so they evolve depending on what works the best in their environment. If a member of the species is stronger and it helps them survive, then they will probably reproduce more, so there will be more « stronger members » in the specie etc Humans on the other hand, do not reproduce only to perpetuate the specie anymore. We dont’ look for what helps the specie go on as much as we used to. We still do a bit, though (of course it is unconscious). But then again, we do not reproduce just to reproduce. We didn’t evolve to do so. People don’t look for just anyone to reproduce with to begin with, and at the same time reproduction in humans doesn’t work exactly like others animals anymore either.

    @@misscroupette9777 this is where you are misunderstanding... humans are still driven by the basic drives.. that desire to have sex with someone? yea thats your breeding instinct right there we have somewhat limited control over these to the point where we can build entire civilizations, but this control is relatively new in human psyche (humans been around for tens of thousands of years but our earliest civilization is about 6,000 years ago. and reproduction in a species is always unique always has been otherwise you don't have seperate species -_- you forget the desire to reproduce is evolved too after all an animal with no desire to breed doesn't breed and thus the trait dies out.

  • @misscroupette9777

    @misscroupette9777

    Jetfire/Quasar But humans, as well as some other animal species, can also have sex only for pleasure. How would you explain homosexual sex ? Or even heterosexual sex without penetration. That is not driven by breeding instincts ;) How do you explain those women who never want kids, and still have sex ? They don’t wanna breed either, and for their entire life that is. Of course the desire to breed still exist. I didn’t say we weren’t controlled at all by any instincts, just that it’s not as strong as before, because we can actually choose to have sex without pregnancy, whether thanks to the pil/condom, or just with abstinence or sex with no penetration.

  • @JetfireQuasar

    @JetfireQuasar

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@misscroupette9777 sex without penetration isn't sex 😂, yes we are 1 of very few species that can have sex for pleasure BECAUSE of humans ability to procreate at pretty much any time that hasn't changed since the time before the pill. Women that choose not to have kids are don't pass on their desire hense why the vast majority of women want kids, since the trait doesn't get passed on 🤣. Homosexuality is a byproduct of the genes behind sexual activity, the genes are usually there to help a woman be more active (more activity more likely to propagate) and when a male gets 2 copies of these genes on the X chromosome it leans towards homosexuality It's also found in studies that when women don't have kids they tend to live less happy and fulfilling lives than those that do. They also tend to be lonely. Feminists HATE it be instinct droves A LOT of women's behavior, it's why Hypergamy will ALWAYS control women's choices

    Actually the human body's design is much perfect for what it is supposed to do. First rule of design is that the form has to follow the function. What is the function? Survive long enough to reproduce, bring up the offspring so it can keep on reproducing. In fact our body excells so well at it, that it is able to spend most of the time with other things that aren't survivial or reproduction. In fact it does it so well that it can engage into recreational sexual intercourse without actual reproduction taking place. This kind of selfhate is so fucking stupid, judt stop practicing it. You can't change it anyway, and you are literally hating it because you don't actually understand it.

    @Ethan Klein I'm lucky. I've had it for decades, with zero pain. I can't explain it. I've come across numerous patients who've come through my e.r. who are also surprised when some random x-ray shows scoliosis, because they've never had any problems, either. Supposedly about 25% of humans have some sort of spinal abnormalities, but don't have any symptoms. I also have spinal stenosis in my neck, and DDD in my lumbar spine. Patiently awaiting some sort of signal from my body that it's a problem. I'm currently 63.

If you think of the spine as a tool, it can last you multiple decades without bringing it in for repairs and up to around 100 years with some damage but still being functional. Imagine using a tool for 60 years with only a few problems and then saying it is badly designed. The title just felt a little click-baity to me.

It could be worse...you could have many other problems also. Try to think of the things that you do have, and thank God every day. I know that it's hard not to focus on your problems, but it helps to count your blessings instead of focusing on your problems. I've been there, done that. This video contains basically all tropes I try to mispell for my patients. The biomechanic model used is outdated, while still too often used for explanations. Please don't get me started on adaptations in late pregnancy. There is a lot, that is widely ignored. In adaptation for birthing. The waddle is a sign of disengaged core muscles. In active women, you definately see less of it. We do have so many problems, because our anatomy is buuilt for walking. All those problems listed are not a thing in rural Africa. In the cities they have started creeping up since the 1950s. But of course it has to be anatomy and not life style.

    I have had back pains since I can remember. My back even bends in two different directions. One is caused by birth and the other bad posture. Because of my EDS I usually accidentally twist my body in ways most people can't or shouldn't even do. I also have always joked about how I was like an old person because of my back pain but recently I get stuck if I bend down for a while. The thing is I just turned 17 and sadly that is just scraping the surface of all my problems. You can blame most of my problems on EDS and I sadly have the worst case of it in my family. I even have a loose rib because of it. I suffered from the pain EDS can give at such a young age I was scared of doing some activities because they hurt but not doing them makes it hurt more. I am now trying to exercise as much as I can before it's too late which soon it will be. The pain I already deal with is too much to handle sometimes and I don't want more.

    After watching I'd say the spine is actually quite a wonder of engineering design. To handle the amount of stress, tension and millions of movements we put it through while also remaining flexible and allowing us to be bipedal seems to be more of a testimate to it's resilience. It's generally known that anything with moving parts breaks down (i.e hard drives vs SSDs). The fact that the spine lasts as long as it does is actually quite amazing! Side thought: I wonder if the breakdown isn't actually the design but rather the fact that the bones and collagen break down and get weaker due to disease and aging 🤔 Excellent video! That was my thought as I thought about the time my unit was out in the woods, practicing setting up the command tent, and the netting I was holding up in front of me got snapped back which hurt my shoulder for a few hours, which also resulted in a T18 vertebral displacement the day after. Was not nice getting out of bed. Could barely walk properly for a week and a half, and my former dumbass of a (equivalent to)Platoon sergeant decided that even though I had a doctors note, I should still be able to stand and and keep watch! With a spinal injury... So of course I got another displacement the day it had been popped back.. But hey, then I got a note saying I can at max walk from the Barracks to the Canteen, and I'm not to leave base. I could have suffered a permanent spinal injury because of him. Can you imagine why despise the man?

And the human spine is brilliant, but it's highly multifunctional and extremely used, so wear-and-tear starts to take it's strain after more than half a century.

    Spinal degeneration doesn't necessarily correlate to pain or other symptoms. You can have a herniated disk or other structural changes and be completely fine. Diverse movements such as rotation are crucial to spinal disk nutrition and should not genrally be avoided, only if there's an actual medical indication to do so. The spine in general ist not as frail as depicted in this video. While it still provides a fairly good overview regarding the anatomy and the context in which our spine evolved, as well as giving a correct summery of possible back injuries, some statements in this video can trigger pain related nocebo effects in individuals with back problems and lead to fear of 'wrong' movement. Thank you for informing the masses, but please be more careful with the wording.

It's insane when you consider how you put the end of optics nerve on the back of the brain, passing through some other structures, instead of putting it in front of olfactory center. No one would put such a big brain for such a narrow hip till your risk of getting stuck in birth canal is probably highest in every mammals.
