I never understood the all the moaning about a CVT keeping the engine in best revs for what's being asked of it at that moment. It doesn't have gears and fake shifts are just stupid. I had a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer (great little car) with a CVT and I got used to the different way it operated by about the third day owning it. It was smooth and the only time it was loud was when I floored it (which wasn't often). I now have a 2021 Subaru with its fake-shifting CVT and I wish you had the option to turn that off. Just let the CVT do what its supposed to do without interruption.

What "all the moaning" is about is just that: moaning (droning of the engine, inherent with CVTs, which many of us can't stand).

A naturally aspirated engine and a spare tire are two very good things about this car. The CVT is really the only thing I don't like but at least Honda's CVTs are more reliable than most.

I'd go with the 2023 HR-V from the list. Unfortunately, Honda only offers it in 3 trim levels. I would much prefer an EX trim vs Sport. So, that leaves the EX-L for me. I like the size (nearly identical to the previous version of CR-V)...and it looks handsome too. Another wonderful review!! Merci

I wonder if Honda’s recent new models are affected by parts shortage? Lack of customization, bundled packages, limited top-trim gadgets (e.g. Accord loses 12way and ventilation seats).

Bought the sport awd. Everything about it has been great. People who complain about the engine/horse power probably don’t even drive their cars hard enough where’s it’s necessary to need more. Learn how to time your merge lol. Like 80% of people don’t even go past 65 on the freeway anyways. I don’t understand the complaint for more horse power.

2.0L + mediocre MPG makes this a deal breaker for me. That's just a very subpar and weak engine choice.

You are right about the front-end looking like Ford, the pre-refreshed Ford Escape.

Every honda looks like other cars now !! They have no soul left Front of 23 accord looks like ford Taurus and tail lights are the same as lincoln aviator !! New Honda pilot tail lights looks exactly like ford endeavor's !!! Civic looks like vw passat from back and side profile exactly matches with Cadillac CT5 !! New hrv looks like all ford

A solid choice, if newly unexciting and so much similarity with Honda's interiors these days; less unique. Worth pointing out, Alex, that you note the Corolla Cross Hybrid's MPGs, but the Corolla Cross 2.0L also has higher EPA MPG ratings than this does - what did it average in your testing vs. the 27.5 you got here?

Not my taste aesthetically but seems like a solid all-rounder. Still wish it had a better powertrain though, even the 1.5T would help as I feel 138 lb-ft simply isn’t enough (especially since you need to rev it to get that figure).

I test drove it, though it was a FWD instead of an AWD. It was not slow. I’m not saying it was fast. It just was not slow. Much much faster to 60 mph than 13 seconds. TheTopher had a really early off the production line car, maybe his was a lemon. Felt more like 9 seconds.

Took a trip and ended up with a Kia Soul rental. Gotta tell you, we were impressed by the drivetrain and the tech. The seats were fairly comfortable. For context, my wife’s car is a CX-9 Signature. The Soul’s price (built on Kia’s site) is a real value. I wouldn’t have considered Kia or Hyundai before the trip. Kia/Hyundai needs to do something about the dealer experience though-Based on reviews.

Kias and their Hyundai cousins look, feel, and drive nicely, but the reliability leaves a lot to be desired. Speaking from experience. I've owned one of each brand.

I would go with Crosstrek base manual transmission.

It looks like it’s about the same size as our 1997 CR-V which had a 2.0 engine

If I’m going for something in the 26-28k range? Ain’t no way any of us are getting Corolla cross hybrids because of dealer markup. I think getting a bronco sport is a weird choice too because that thing has zero backseat space. Hrv or crosstrek for me, with a strong lean towards the honda since I don’t need awd and reliability will be undoubtedly better.

Look at the CX-50 if you find one under 30k. It's so much better than the HRV

Interesting that the Mazda CX-30 was not included in the price comparison at the end; it would be my first choice in this segment along with the Corolla Cross followed by the CrossTrek. The HR-V is out for me because of its size (I'd much sooner get the similarly sized Mazda CX-5 if I wanted an SUV that big), performance and dowdy looks.

@@kenhoward3512 Disgaree; the CX-5 is only one inch longer than the HR-V, regardless of what class Honda says the HR-V belongs to, and they're priced similarly, at least here in Canada. I know if I was in the market for an SUV that size, I'd cross-shop the two (or at least I would have if I found the HR-V's looks/performance more to my liking). Honda's new SUV lineup is confusing; it seems they think it's a good marketing strategy to introduce SUVs that are too large for the market segments they nominally compete in; the new CR-V is the same.

The fuel economy seems poor honestly my wife's much bigger gas only Honda CRV gets around 29-30 MPG all the time. Something this small should get better MPG iMO.

It not so small anymore , a '13 Rav4 got the same wheelbase and overall external dimension but with 73 cubic feet of cargo instead of the 55 for this Hr-v which therefore has less good packaging than before . Even the mpg is almost similar for a 2.5L in the Toyota with a conventional 6 speed automatic .

Alex, What manual/pillow lumbar do you carry with you?

Disappointing that honda isnt selling any true subcompact vehicles in the US anymore. I bet the newest Fit and CUV equivalent would've sold like hot cakes when gas prices were high

Americans will always hope that the price of gas will come back lower. Big pick-ups are always big sellers no matters what is the gas price . It is very sad especially for us Canadians because we are deprived of interesting vehicles such as Toyota Noah, Sienta or Roomy . Cause Rican's rule our market we are not even able to get our hands on the Corolla wagon estate hybrid.

How about bringing back one of the most reliable 4 cylinder engines of all time, the 2.4 and maybe make it an option on the upper trim level? Over 180 hp!

A reliable motor like that should probably be standard in all HRVs. The HRV and the Corolla Cross are way too underpowered compared to competition. The Corolla Cross is better off with the same reliable motor that's in the RAV4. The CX-30 got it right by putting the same motor as the CX-5 in it which gives them plenty of power for their base model while retaining good gas mileage. The better motors may have raised the price of the HRV and Corolla Cross a couple grand but it would be worth it.

Toyota Corolla Cross way more then the Kia Seltos, so if I were you I'll opt for the seltos.

4:30 into video, blind spot monitoring also standard in mid level sport trim, do not have to go to top trim EXL.

I could have forgiven all the faults of this if it had the 1.5t. I hope acura will make an HRV equivalent with the 1.5t. That would be an absolute winner

Honda is not done with this car. Next year the Civic and the HRV will implement the their hybrid tech. It's already out in other countries and its getting fantastic reviews. Also you keep harping on the vent dust- a little nit picky . Again, no mention on safety- It just passed the IIHS upgraded crash test . The new Honda global architecture is robust and refined.

If This Had a 6Spd Trans ~ Standard Row, Our Own it Be a HiT, but Can't Do cvt Period.

This is no longer a sub compact SUV, Honda blew it with this larger model if you ask me.

I love Honda, but without the 1.5T engine, this doesn't seem like a great value. I didn't buy the last HRV because the CRV was just an overall better value. A stick shift Crosstrek or Impreza hatch would be my choice if budget was in the low 20s.

It's a shame Honda almost always uses reduced sound deadening to reduce weight and production cost (instead of using maybe an additional aluminum component or two).

would luv to see a hybrid version of this vs. a hybrid Passport soon also with a power boost.

My fit was recently totaled sadly and small fun roomy cars just don’t exist anymore. I’m probably going to get this HRV but I’m not happy about it.

For anyone worried that the front is too soft looking and looks like the Escape (pre-refresh) I can bet that in 2024 they will give it a taller and squarer grille like the new ugly refresh look of the Ridgeline. SUV buyers like underhoods with empty space...

The HRV 2023 is a nice vehicle but the new lack of magic seats eliminates it as a candidate for me since I have a dog and it would have been a major benefit to keep my dog in the back seat. The former Element was a great dog vehicle esp. in the sense of very useable back seat and flat floor. Hopefully Honda brings it back as a hybrid soon with otherwise very similar internal design.

Hybrid tech still isn't what it needs to be to convince everyone to buy them. Most of them start breaking down and having issues after 100K miles. When some gasoline models are still able to last 300K+ with regular maintenance and oil changes they are hard to beat because of their reliability.

I would like to choose Kia Niro HEV instead if Kia can change the design of the rear turning light, which is too low to be noticed. Or I will choose Kia Seltos if they can provide a natural gas engine + AT transmission.

As an HR-V owner (2016 ex-l) I absolutely hate the new one. Everything that made it awesome is gone. Magic seats, 9 inches longer. I love my car because it’s easy to parallel park, and I can throw everything in it, plus a kitchen sink. It’s slow as hell, but I rarely leave town and never go over 45mph. When I do take a road trip to our second house or my sisters beach house I get 34-40mpg by just doing the speed limit. I feel Honda lost it’s mojo with packaging. Most I could have ever wanted from the second gen would have been the civic’s 1.5T.

The reason for this packaging is because they needed to make a lower priced vehicle for more buyers. The old gen features you're talking about only worked for a small subset of buyers. This new package will work for a lot more buyers as a low cost option to get into since everything else is way more expensive. New, first-time buyers will like something like this. Think of this as the civic that buyers used to get back in the day as a first time vehicle. I can see many high school kids or new college grads getting this vehicle.

Good points; long hood makes it longer outside while the loss of Magic Seats makes it less versatile. This is simply not an H-RV. It is a Civic Crossover, as indicated by the comparison at 24:00 .

I'll have to visit the dealership again, as I cannot recall which Hondas has the hard and flat seats. If a seat is not padded enough for long trips, the whole car is a waste, unless you wish to replace the front seats :)) For the upper grades, I hope they have lumbar support. Sometimes it doesn't matter however, if the seat just works. I am 5' ,7.5" and shrinking with age. :(

It's just arrived in my country (NZ) as a full Hybrid with a 2.0L engine and two electric motors. (The lower trim model has a 1.5L Turbo, not hybrid). Where it may score over Toyota's system is it can run on electric motors only, gas motor only or gas motor charging the battery for electric drive only. I rode in one last week and found it very quiet in terms of cabin noise. Pretty impressive.

The reason HRV has full LEDs all around the vehicle, but Honda Pilot does not is because there exist Acura MDX that is luxury version of Honda Pilot but there is not Honda HRV equivalent in Acura line up.

I miss the 2022 hr-v.

Even though they upgraded the engine it's still underpowered. I have a 2020 Sport trim and this looks better in every way especially the new Civic like interior. This vehicle needs the 1.5L turbo engine to be competitive with the competition.

'' it feel bigger & more grown up , more stable , more planted etc '' all well sought attributes but your balloon will blow-up when the cow does not want to move forward with luggages & passengers aboard. When you have to merge on the highway, the noise of the engine will add to the drama on board. The old one was just better designed while offering the same drama when merging, we just knew that we were buying a smaller, less powerful vehicule but with a better packaging...that's all.

I don’t see cheese grater. I’m not sure where this came from but it certainly has stuck. It’s a honeycomb shape. If you wanted to make fun of it every time you would call it Remington microblade circa 1992.

Way too big for a "small" cuv. I am a long time honda owner but, in a couple years when i am ready to buy, i will look elsewhere at honda's competitors. As well, with the ice engine it is a dog and should have come standard with the 1.5 turbo at basically no mileage penalty AND we should have the hybrid option from the start , as other markets have.

@@oi32df i live in montreal and it does not get much colder than that, i have several cars of various makes ALL with a turbo and never had an issue. In fact, i know of no one locally with a turbo engine who has had issues. Frankly if a turbo has issues i think it more likely in a hot climate like the american south

We have a 2023 HR-V Sport AWD and one thing I will note is the fuel economy is terrible. It's got a really small tank and we've been getting 23-24 mpg in mixed highway and city driving. Effective range is poor. Really disappointing. No power and no fuel economy to boot. Other than that, the car is amazing but if I would have known ahead of time about the fuel economy, it would have been a deal breaker.

Kinda weird as far as mpg. I get 34 combined with my 2019 Crv and. Definitely lost some excitement with this year.

I was hoping what made the new Civic an outstanding car would make its way into the HR-V. Some aspects did transition and translate over, but the HR-V is horribly underpowered. It screams subpar. It almost feels like what an 80's Hyundai or Daewoo or Escort felt like. It's the car equivalent of a studio apartment in a crummy neighborhood that was close to the college you were going to.

This car is way too slow and the cvt sounds like its straining in the high rpm. Maybe the Subbie or a Mazda would be more interesting. It's loud, but not so proud and just a very bland vehicle.

Alex, The growth of interior space and accommodation is entirely in keeping with the circumferential growth of the population our HR-V serves. I salute Honda for sending smaller versions of the HR-V to markets with smaller people but they lose marks for the VERY mediocre mpg. BTW did the missing 'magic seat' offer as much comfort as adaptability?

The magic seat in itself was fine. the last gen hrv was very small, so seating was very upright. Neither of them really have adjustability. In my opinion Alex kind of under sells how much more comfortable it is to be inside of the 2023.

Wow.. the HRV is such a disappointment. it's like Honda didn't even want to TRY. I'd probably pass on that for several reasons, including the ones you mentioned. But I would still take it over the Bronco sport or the Taos that you mentioned, for price and especially reliability reasons. The HRV's poor relative fuel economy & poor acceleration and ho-hum braking (125 feet is an A-?!?!?!) really make for a lackluster package. Add to that its disappointing seats & you've got a car that you will want to get rid of before too long. There are no really great options in this segment at the moment... maybe the Crosstrek is the best bet. But I'd even rather wait for a 2024 Trax or Trailblazer.

the euro and jdm version is so much better especially w/ the turbo version. This one honda really missed it. poor mpg, slow and fugly.

Just test drove this. The second row middle seat is absolutely useless and painful. You need to call out makers who make such glaring errors.

Because it's definitely lagging behind since 2016-17 in India at least & we were thinking that honda is not understanding Indian auto market but seems like they're facing difficulty & cut throat competition across the globe which isn't helping them in making record sales which they used to do in the last few decades even in India & rest of the world !

It's an underpowered CR-V priced like a few model years ago CR-V. Seltos with the 8 speed, even a '23 Prius especially if you don't need the 2nd row for people is a better bet or just get a lightly used CR-V.

Man I'm glad Honda upgrade the motor of the HR-V with the Civic 2.0L motor but the profile look like and old Kia Soul, especially looking from the frontal view. Sorry, but I'll pass and go for the Kia Seltos since this new HR-V looks like a Kia any way. The Seltos is better.

Cue the comments calling this “dangerously slow” 🤣 The bummer about the old HR-V was the really outdated interior (it was outdated when it was released) and the terrible crash safety. This thing is too big for a subcompact crossover. Having the utility of a wagon shape in the back without having to have a gigantic SUV is actually really nice. The fuel economy is also embarrassing. My parent’s old 2015 CX-5 GT would get better fuel economy in mixed driving with a bigger vehicle, bigger engine and basic 6spd auto, all while being faster. The fuel economy of the non-hybrid 2.0 has always been a bit crappy, even in the Civic. The fact that the 1.5t gets basically the same fuel economy in the Civic despite being a substantial upgrade in every other way.

The new HR-V is a big disappointment.

@@braetonwilson4296 it’s rightfully so. Where does the corolla excel over the civic? Nothing. Sure the hybrid is nice but you still get the same compromises of a regular corolla only you pay more for the hybrid There’s a reason Honda beats Toyota in many ways. Because it rightfully shows

The car is too wide for narrow city roads and small suburb roads. And underpowered. What a disappointment. The width is more that of a compact suv than subcompact. Wish they made a 70 inch width version of this with the same engine as the civic hybrid. The Civic hybrid is a much better alternative, smaller and more powerful. This suv makes no sense to me.

2nd gen for Hrv

I agree with the previous commenter; the HR-V is now the size of the CX-5, which is a much better SUV. I would prefer the Corolla Cross Hybrid…if it ever comes out. They announced it June 1, 2022 but it won’t actually be on the market until “late spring” 2023…so…May or June 2023…
