The Horses are NOT HAPPY with the Farm's New Additions!! // The Girls Make Applesauce

The farm's got new additions and the horses are NOT happy about it!! We have three new baby piglets in the horse barn today! After we put them in their new pen, the girls (my wife Brenda and daughters, Trudy and Abby) make applesauce with our overabundance of apples this year!

A few years ago, I had a couple of hogs to take to the butcher. I ask my neighbor to borrow his stock trailer and he hauls horses and cattle in it. He said that a horse would not get into the trailer after pigs had been in it. He is the type of guy that would do anything for you .

I love Hampshires. We had a Hampshire boar many years ago who was so gentle that kids could ride him, even though he was almost 800 lbs. I kept a lot of his daughters because they were really gentle too. My weaning average went up with such good, gentle sows. I like your strainer. It looks like it is better about not leaking juice all over the kitchen than mine is.

That's an interesting contraption! I wondered how you dealt with leaving the peels on. I have a "cheatier" way of making applesauce, but I have to peel and core them first, so I'm not sure it's really a "cheat." I just toss the wedges into a crockpot and let them cook down all day. But it's pretty much just me, no crew to enjoy the process with. You are blessed to have each other! I remember the days when my mom and aunts and I would gather to cook up a mess of whatever. Boy, those were fun times!

I have one of those pressers made by Squezzo that makes making juices, salsa, and several other garden and fruits easy to can. Tomato juice, is one that is easy and I have to add water to cut it some as it otherwise is to acidic for some to drink. Same with the grape juice. Your channel is one that is true to home grown hard work that all ways makes my day, keep up the good work making these movies.

Sis laughed and said, you can't they came out of my Mom's garden. They said, these are the best beans we have ever eaten. And truly they were great. :)

Good morning Brenda.Never saw little pigs on the farm before. What a nice addition. Maybe not so much for the horses though.

I wish I could introduce you to the joys of Peasegood Nonsuch (some call it Nonesuch). Huge apples, waxy skin, that are second-to-none (hence the name Nonesuch) when it comes to apple dessert or sauce..

Smushie! Someone who uses my terminology. That is the same way that I explained it to my oldest son. I also made apple jelly using my apple skins. Also have made apple pie filling and apple pies to freeze. It is more fun to make when you have help in the kitchen.

Have made apple jelly like that before. This year I canned some apple pie filling also- so handy. Yes, much more fun with help!

BTW I loved seeing another aspect of farm life! Do you guys have anything like a root cellar? Would love to see that. The house I grew up in was an old log house with asbestos siding. It had a dug cellar under it very small. Wasn't very good as I remember stuff regularly froze in it. When I was about 10 they dug a new one out in the yard, and built walls of concrete block with an empty can storage room above. It worked much better.
