American here and I have to agree... the collapsible shovels are a joke. I was lucky enough to come across one of these about 25 years ago and bought it. So glad I did, it's still going strong. The shovel is indestructible and a fantastic camp tool. Highly recommended, you can't beat it.

The original Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel and the larger Cold Steel Spetznaz Trench Shovels are very well made and are remarkably versatile tools. Both have excellent ergonomics and can be used for tasks that would ordinarily be carried out by machetes, hatchets and axes! Reliable, durable and capable, they offer considerable capability for their size. Its easy to see why early infantrymen liked them tor trench clearing, close quarters fighting and self defence. In addition to a Silky Fox Outback Saw, a Gransfors Bruks Hatchet and a Mora Companion HD, the Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel is a perfect choice. These four tools are about the best of their type, and enable the user to do just about anything. Cold Steel has done a fantastic job of bringing these useful tools to a greater audience, many of whom had no idea they even existed. Having absolutely no interest in throwing my knives, hatchets, axes or shovels, I was initially quite skeptical about these, but over time the very positive reviews kept drawing me back. I already had the Fiskars/Gerber NATO Folding Shovel and an original Russian Military Titanium Shovel, but my curiosity was peaked by a Zachary Fowler video and I ordered the Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel. As soon as I held it I realised what all the fuss was about, it felt absolutely perfect in the hand and was beautifully constructed of high quality components. It was also razor sharp on three edges, like Gransfors Brucks straight out of the box razor sharp! This is a particularly impressive piece of kit, and a genuine asset to have (I can even use it to paddle my Packraft!). Seeing that Cold Steel UK still had stocks of the larger Spetznaz Trench Shovel, I immediately ordered one! The original Cold Steel SF Shovel is my preferred choice for bike-rafting or bicycle camping and is one of my favorite pieces of kit. Where preferable, a longer handle can be made from found wood and fitted via the two securing screws, this is far better than having a rivetted handle.

I bought one of these online just the other day from a Ukrainian merchant. I love the simple, yet elegant design. I live in Southwest Queensland, Australia, and when it arrives, the spade will prove quite useful. I first heard of these handy little spades from a Bosnian Veteran years ago. He told me that they can also be used as a paddle for crossing rivers etcetera. My Maternal Grandmother occasionally used old shovels for cooking. I happen to be part Australian Aboriginal. Thank you for sharing this useful information.

since I owned different models I can tell you that it depends on the date and place of manufacturing. Vintage shovels were usually more robust than, let's say, the ones from the late 80s. Quality went down in a spiral^^

From what I've read, the brave soldiers during the great patriotic war had an uncanny ability to drop to the ground and immediately dig in where ever they were. I find it interesting that everyone keeps calling it a "Spetsnatz Shovel" even though it's been used since WWI. What is the actual Russian term for this shovel? I recall seeing it in a WWII manual...

I used to box as a young man. I regard self-defense as a must learn skill for every individual, even at the age of 72. Because I do not avoid confrontational situations with an aggressor I have cancelled my carry-conceal handgun permit because I do not trust myself in a street situation with a firearm. I now carry a Cold Steel Spetsnaz shovel in a back pack. I prefer a two-handed grip in that it is less likely to be grabbed by an opponent and if I am behind the attacker on the ground I can place the handle at the front of his throat, hook the handle in the crook of my left elbow, place my left hand behind his head and then lock the blade of the shovel behind his right upper shoulder leaving my right hand free to gouge eyes, smash nose etc. This is from a left-hand perspective. --mike
