The Holberg Debate 2017: "Propaganda, Facts and Fake News" with J. Assange, J. Pilger & J. Heawood

At the 2017 Holberg Debate, Julian Assange, John Pilger and Jonathan Heawood discussed the presence of propaganda in news and social media, and its democratic implications.
About 00:11:00 Julian Assange
About 00:56:00 Questions for Julian Assange
About 01:19:00 Jonathan Heawood
About 01:43:00 John Pilger
About 02:17:11 Las Q&A Session
Is there an escalating war of information that is threatening our democracy and our ability to make informed decisions?
The event took place at the University of Bergen, Norway, on December 2nd, 2017.
About the speakers:
Julian Assange joins the panel via videolink. Assange is an award-winning journalist and the founder and editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks. He is also a programmer, cryptographer, author and activist. Founded in 2006, WikiLeaks has published millions of leaked documents and several videos. This includes logs that relate to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the controversial “Collateral Murder” video from Iraq, U.S. diplomatic cables, and election campaign related e-mails from the Democratic National Committee and from Hillary Clinton's campaign manager, John Podesta.
Jonathan Heawood is the CEO and founder of IMPRESS, the only press regulator to be recognised as independent and effective under the Royal Charter in the United Kingdom. He has previously worked as a journalist and human rights campaigner, and he is a former director of English PEN. Heawood has written on free speech and regulation for various publications, including The Encyclopedia of Twentieth-Century Fiction, Critical Quarterly, Journal of Media Law, Ethical Space and Communications Law.
John Pilger is an Australian journalist, author and documentary film-maker. Pilger has covered military, political and cultural conflicts around the world for more than five decades, and his criticism of American, Australian and British foreign policy is strongly reflected his documentaries and writings. He worked at the Daily Mirror from 1963 to 1986 and wrote a regular column for the New Statesman magazine from 1991 to 2014. Pilger has won numerous awards as a journalist and film-maker, and he is one of only two people to win British journalism’s highest award twice.
The Holberg Debate 2017 is a collaboration between the Holberg Prize, the Fritt Ord Foundation and Norwegian PEN (Western Norway).

@@DJ-Brownie-UK What is the signal of fake coughing that really bugs you? He's clearly deteriorated from his imprisonment in the Ecuadorean Embassy up to that point combined with the stress of knowing the US was conspiring to destroy him. He stutters, loses his train of thought, and you can hear him struggling to suppress the cough while he's speaking. If what you're saying is he pulling an act, he should get an Oscar for the rest of his life for juggling all those fake patterns while speaking on a topic. If you're saying he's bullshitting, I find that incredible given that he's not been caught lying publicly at any time as far as I understand it. He's the gold standard for honesty adrift in a vast sea of bullshit and lies.

I was proudly working at BBC News in the early nineties on the technical side, recording journalists’ reports as they came in. Being of Serb origin I listened with interest to the reports about the war in the former Yugoslavia. I’m not a ‘political’ person by nature but this matter was close to my heart. When I noticed that completely unverified anti Serb reports were being aired I was in shock. A lot of those reports turned out to be completely incorrect. Yet there was never any apology. The Serbs were totally demonised, and still are to this day. The UK has written it’s version of history and it’s teaching it in our schools pointing the finger of guilt firmly at those ‘genocidal Serbs’ to justify it’s bombing of innocent civilians and illegal trespass by building it’s enormous NATO base on Serbian land in Kosovo. It disgusts me how righteous the West paints itself to be while ruining other lands and lives. Now I see the same thing happening with Russia and it’s people. In conclusion: whatever the MSM say, the truth is probably the opposite. As Pilger says ‘The crimes of America never happened’. When you think that the US is the only country to throw not one, but two nuclear bombs on innocent civilians in Japan and NOONE was punished ! How can they talk about taking Putin to their court of human rights when they do far more evil acts?

  • @michael511128

    @michael511128

There was a 2016 NHK documentary called Executive Non-Decision telling from declassified archived documents that Truman didn’t give the orders to drop the bombs, he wasn’t involved before FDR died and killing women and children civilians just didn’t make sense. He didn’t like to be framed for the crime. The military gave the order then reported to him giving him no choice but to read from the script. But the documentary stopped there. Well, who gave the order to the military in the first place? Who invested in the Manhattan Project and owned the bombs? This remains to be classified, probably forever. But that wasn’t hard to figure out. Since WW1 JP Morgan was the designated financier of both domestic and foreign governments. At Wall Street they organised other bankers and industrialists of their investments. There weren’t that many tycoons back then. Many books have talked about them. In order to promote the bomb they must drop them in battle to prove their worth. There were bomb planes as well as film planes. The second bomb changed target from Tottori to Nagasaki due to cloud covering that probably wouldn’t affect the bombing but the filming. Afterwards they sold more than 50,000 bombs in 50 years and still going. What profitable business!

Far more evil acts? Really? I want Bush and Blair in front of a court. I was on the streets before that irak war began and while it was going on. I know it was all a bout the bloody oil. But just as then I am also now protesting Russia's war of aggression. What a pathetic leader Putin is. He could have waited . NATO was weakening, Us was dithering and is turning inwards. He did not need to kill his brothers. I think China has influenced him. Xi is another super ego in this earth who thinks he is the state. Never put all the power in one man's hand. And here finally I agree,: the media should to be free and independent but: as long as the media are run by humans..it will never be totally neutral. If the media are run by algorithms: it will be worse.

From going against the Sultan of Morocco, to invading the tiny island of Grenada, 1983. Well, this means that in our entire history, we have only had 17 years of peace, and even fewer, cuz here the almost 5 years of our Civil War (Union/Confed 1861‒1865), are Not counted, since this war was not with another country, but against us. And the wars against the Native Nations of America either are not counted, for the same reason). Anyway: We fought against 29 countries. We have "Grown" 711 the size of our territory from the original 13 colonies. the establishment press ELECTED Trumpf! Unprecedented pre election spotlight was given him for FREE. b/c the establishment WANTS majority party (whoever they are) to have 100% unison and block vote to push through the 1% corporate agenda. Thats why democrats CHOOSE to be hibernating now. They know how the money is to be made: Just wait for the overwhelming backlash so that then THEY can collect money from the same 1% when their time comes and have 100% unison block dem vote to push through further the corporate agenda. It's a nice joke. It's a total drama. fake.

John Pilger acts as if we, the people can determine for ourselves who is telling us the truth just because we have the internet. I assume that he knows just how much disinformation is out there! I am retired and I cannot stay on top of it all. How are working people with families supposed to do it? We can basically discount whatever mainstream news is telling us but on the opposite side is disinformation from all sides! On top of that we are trying to navigate what news is relevant to our health, the education of our children, etc. How can we possibly discern, or form an opinion on world news when there are so many voices out there?

He's not acting.... he is pointing out the way..... the information is there .. follow the money and the power and it's fairly easy to see what is likely to be true. Firstly do not believe anyone including John Pilger. Question everything. Even if one media stream was faithful it would inevitably become corrupted since as it gains more power that power will corrupt it.

We need more journalists like John Pilger. Sadly, he’s a breed that is nearly dead, as is the truth - though I try to search for that to save my sanity. Most people in the West don’t care about the truth and that to me is alarming. They just seem to want to have fun constantly for fear the truth will depress them too much and they won’t be able to cope. Once people get used to being lied to and controlled it’s almost impossible to go back. I feel like Winston living in his Orwellian world. Talking about what’s happening with others makes me feel like I’m a modern day party pooper. Pass the salt dear…

Please check out these FACTS that are on the Web: "In 250 years of existence as a nation, the US has fought against 29 sovereign countries. (In Fact, since 1785, we have been involved, for 231 years, in some kind of war. And this wars, against all varieties of nations. Our Economic, Political and Military development was established thanks to the Piracy, the Slavery, the Massacres, the Opium Trade or Cocaine Traffic, and the Weakness of many abused sovereign nations. We have provoked with total impunity, 12 Genocides and 9 Massacres, ‒inside and outside our own borders‒, and Assassinations of Gov’t. Leaders, Coups d'État and Economic Blockades in 6 UN member nations. Between 1947 and 1989, the US tried to change other nations gov’ts 73 times. It includes 66 covert Ops. And 7 overt ones. In Civil Wars: The US has taken advantage of and intervened without justification in the following Civil Wars: In Marquesas Island. (Massacre. 1813). US Forces seize Nuku Hiva Island (French Polynesia 1813), and establish here «The First US Naval Base», in the Pacific. This historical fact is important, cuz in 1813, the US had NO Territorial Land nor Maritime Rights in the Pacific Ocean, until 1848, when the US seized California and other Mexican territories facing the Pacific. In Haiti. (1813 and 1901 and then 1915-1919-1934-2001). In the Philippines. (1898-1902. Genocide. One Million people dead). In Hawaii. (1889 and 1890-1893 and 1901). In Cuba. (1898 and 1901-1902 and 1906 and 1913 and 1952 and again 1960). In Island Guam and Island Wake (1898-1899 and 1902-1905). In Island of Samoa. (1898-1899). In Puerto Rico. (1898-1902 to 2023 LOL). In Russia. (1918-1920). In the "Republic Banana Wars" of Central America. (Massacre. 1912-1934). In Dominican Republic. (1916-1924 and 1965-1966). In Honduras. (1903 and 1912 and 1919 and 1924-1925 and again 2009). In Venezuela. (1936 and 1945 and again in 1948). Military Coup in Peru. (1948 and 1967). In China. (1856-1859, and 1899-1901, and 1913 and 1933, and again in 1945-1946-1949). Military assistance to Chinese rebels in Taiwan. (1951-1952). In Korea. (1871 and 1950-1953). In Iran. (1953). American democracy is built on this model: "The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. ...In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind. " "If we understand the mechanism and motives of the group mind, is it not possible to control and regiment the masses according to our will without their knowing about it? The recent practice of propaganda has proved that it is possible, at least up to a certain point and within certain limits." - Edward Bernays (1928).
