Thank you very much for bringing the m4 edit to my attention and I can’t thank Alex enough for putting in the time and effort to faithfully adapt possibly my favorite book into a faithful movie. I have watched it multiple times and absolutely love it. I don’t know where else to discuss this so I’ll do it here. I still have two major issues with the final edit. Neither of which Alex could fix. 1) Thorin and Co. joining the Battle of the Five armies without armor. Your glimpse behind the scenes explains this but it’s still so ridiculous and would’ve been so much cooler if they bust out of the mountain with all the coolest armor and weapons dwarves had ever created and it would’ve been more believable that they completely changed the tide of the battle. 2) Bilbo being so timid when he meets Smaug. I’m pretty sure in the book it said that Bilbo had read about dragons and knew they had huge egos and were susceptible to flattery so he immediately goes that route. In the movie he’s absolutely terrified and just starts complimenting Smaug for some reason. This guy took two step outside the shire and ran into massive stone trolls that wanted to eat him and after initially faltering he builds the courage to stall for time. Then he willingly bets his life on a game of riddles, quickly saves the entire company from a pack of giant spiders, and breaks everyone out of an elvish prison all without any or much hesitation at all. I get the dragon is huge and terrifying but after everything he’s seen I wouldn’t expect it to be that paralyzing at least in comparison to the trolls at the very beginning of his journey. And what should’ve been consistent growth through his journey just winds up reversing course for a little while I guess because timid is just what Martin Freeman does best? I love the casting but it’s like if Sam ran and hid when Gollum ambushed he and Frodo on Mount Doom. Anyway just wanted to get that out there. It’s impressive that the edit is so good that it takes all of my issues with the original three movies down to two problems. Quick question also: will you announce what you’re planning to cover next or will we just wake up one morning like Christmas and one of your meaty videos drops?

I mean, a couple dumb trolls is not the same as being all alone with a big-ass fire breathing dragon. If he’s all confidence and swagger in there, then the audience wouldn’t feel a bit of fear for him. I totally get him being scared and trying to feel Smaug out to determine how he’s going to survive this.

@@hothotheat3000 I would agree with that but in the movie it didn’t look to me like he was feeling out how to survive. It just looked like he was paralyzed with fear and starts complimenting him for no reason. I also agree that a dragon is different than trolls and we as an audience know this so we know there’s more danger associated with this interaction even if bilbo acts more courageous when facing the dragon vs the trolls because of his growth. And then the “what have I done?” payoff is that much greater when Smaug goes to burn lake town because Bilbo realizes how badly he screwed up in not just quietly burglarizing like the dwarves wanted and instead overconfidently trying to play word games with a dragon. He builds confidence throughout the entire story leading to hubris which gets a bunch of innocent people killed and finds a happy medium in the end

I watched the M4 edit, but unfortunately I couldn't watch along since I no longer have a PC. Thankfully though, I was familiar with it enough to understand the context of the changes as they came up in the discussion.

24:45 Oh so THAT's what happened. One time I was watching something and my headphones' audiojack screwed up, I only heard the soundtrack and like a dim echo of the dialogue. At the time I thought I somehow managed to isolate one audio layer by accident, I guess it was something like that but not quite.

Amazing work and insights - I enjoyed and learned a lot! Fun to think that, unless our AI overlords use us for food, in some years you will be able to use AI to recreate entire scenes and offer a completely reimagined film. I look forwards to it!

With regard to why Bilbo is at Ravenhill in the edit, it's possible that he might have either wanted to stealth assassinate Azog (or just Orc Commander here), or at the very least destroy whatever contraption he was using to send orders to his army. Since he has the One Ring, he can easily sneak in and out without much chance of being captured or killed by the enemy. Although I don't know if there's any footage that could be used to suggest that.
