The history of white people [5/24/2010]

In one of the most celebrated non-fiction works of the year, Nell Irvin Painter asks and answers the question, “Who’s white?” Defining “whiteness” has proved challenging, if not elusive, but the consequences of being classified as “white” or not have been consequential. Painter is an historian who recently retired from the Princeton University faculty. The New York Times Book Review said that her book “has much to teach everyone, including whiteness experts.”
