    Idk if it's just me being a layman who has never had to do an extreme weight cut, but it seems to be in a very similar vein of thought as PED's. Both can be *arguably* safe when used with medical knowledge and in controlled situations, but often enough they lead to seriously dangerous short/long term consequences for the person taking the respective risk, all in the name of gaining an unfair advantage over an opponent. If the basic premise of cutting a ton of water weight and body fat is to fight people in a smaller weight class to what you normally walk around at, how is that any better than sticking drugs in your system to fight someone who is fighting naturally? Because everyone is doing it? Sounds familiar 🤔 I'm not trying to start shit, I genuinely want to know if I'm missing something really obvious or weight cutting really is as dumb as it seems to me.

  • @joshuadeboyer9992

    @joshuadeboyer9992

    2 жыл бұрын

    no it really is that dumb. there are exceptions but it seems for the most part both fighters in a bout cut weight to have that size advantage come fight night. but when you think about it, what exactly is the advantage if both fighters walk around at close to the same weight but still cut down?

  • @DOMDZ90911

    @DOMDZ90911

    2 жыл бұрын

    There's been no conclusive studies conducted on MMA fighters cutting weight. A lot of what people think are advantages to cutting weight all boils down to bro science. In contrast, Powerlifters who do cut weight, have a significant advantage over others if they weigh heavier. And this is well established that size is related to how much you can bench, deadlift, or squat (but of course there are outliers). In conclusion, it makes sense for Powerlifters who only have to lift weights in a specific manner, but it doesnt for MMA fighers who fight. And no it's not equivalent to taking PED's. In fact, the effect of PED's is that it allow you to cut more weight while retaining a lot of the benefits, but the weight cut itself isnt what gives the benefits.

    Fantastic, great job as always. As far as the whole weight cutting/dehydration debacle I would suggest implementing what ONE did, but also having the fighters do a weigh in for the fight three days ahead of time instead of the day before. This would allow for any dehydration woes to be properly taken care of via rehydration and relaxation. They could also choose to implement rules that have already been discussed but not implemented such as not allowing fighters to cut more than 15 lbs from their natural weight. You have to remember that Anthony Johnson used to fight at welterweight but walk around at heavyweight. Yes he had problems making weight on numerous occasions but he had 13 successful fights at welterweight as well.

    Adding in weight testing at intervals before the fight would help. Do a weight check 30 days, 15 days and 7 days out to ensure a fighter is actually going to make weight. Aside that, stronger financial repercussions certainly make a difference. And lastly, having a more stringent process to change weight classes, such as an application and approval process being required on an annual basis, would go a long way to avoid athletes thinking they can fight wherever they choose whenever they want to.

  • @nickzukowski4106

    As I see it, one way to discourage drastic weight cuts--and therefore limit high profile misses--is to taper the weigh-ins leading into the fight. The exact numbers would need to be decided more seriously but having to weigh in at, say, no more than 110% of the limit two weeks out and 115% of the limit three or four weeks out, etc, would limit how much of the weight cut is just last-minute water loss, and if fighters see that they can't maintain a higher walking-around weight between fights as a result, then they either find themselves adjusting to a lighter "normal" so they're cutting less, or look at moving to a more natural class for their day to day weight.

    For Brazilians, this is nothing more than the Argentinean way. A Brazilian team plays there, and the supporters will be banging on the hotel the whole night. The commission comes up with many excuses to not let supporters, interfere with the event in ways that favor the local team. Charles was in Arizona, where there were apparent interference and mess around. It is up to UFC to make sure this thing doesn't happen. At the end of the day, If you are a prospect fighter looking for money and fame and an organization doesn't look professional, you may look somewhere else. It is undoubtedly very disappointing that the organization has stripped the title of a fighter in shady circumstances who has been 10 years in the organization. If you are the manager of an excellent prospect, you would think twice if to sign with the organization or look for fame and money somewhere else. Bellator and One Fight are pretty good events these days.

    Exato, meu mano. Pareceu muito uma hometown advantage. E o UFC é uma empresa privada, então eles podem fazer e acobertar o que quiserem, inclusive forçar um campeão americano. Zoaram a balança COM CERTEZA. Só ver as entrevistas do Charles e dos reporteres que estavam lá, muitos dos atletas falam a mesma coisa.

    The way it SHOULD be is that the fighters weigh in right before the fight like literally 10 minutes before the fight and if they miss weight then they lose 80% of their pay. I can guarantee that no one would miss weight anymore and no more of this moving weight classes every other fight everything would be much simpler!

    Either modify/change the weight limits, or base it on walking around weight. I don't know exactly how they'd do the former, I'll admit. The latter I can simply point to the hospitalizations or dropped fights included in the video. There's nothing healthy about being to the point of trembling and almost passing out at the weigh-in.
