The History of The X-Men Animated Series: How Belief in the Idea Conquered A Lack of Cash

Ойын-сауық

In this episode we cover one of the most quintessentially 90's shows of all-time: The X-Men Animated Series.
With it's earworm of a theme song and it's chronological approach to storytelling it helped to bring Marvel to the forefront of pop culture and turn it into the juggernaut it is today.

What i loved most about this series was that it played like a greatest hits. In adaping the comics it trimmed all of the fat so much so it impaired my ability to read the massively convoluted cluterfuck of the comics. It kept the mystique of Wolverine, cable, Gambit and Apocalypse without over explaning thier backgrounds. No need fot Madelyn prior. ;-)

My son (11) and I have been watching this over the past several weeks. It's a really solid show. No other show except Batman: TAS really delved into as many mature themes, so it was a ballsy show which, honestly, probably couldn't be made today without offending PC censors. It's a definite two thumbs up from us! Last year, I saw what my kid was watching on Disney XD and was mortified at the poor quality, so I resolved to introduce him to GOOD animation. We've watched the entire DCAU, X-Men, Spider-Man (nineties), Space Ghost, Jonny Quest and several others. Now my son can't understand why they can't make cartoons anymore. I tell him I don't know.

Someone ought to make a compilation video of the most immortal tv intro themes without vocals. X-Men, X-Files, Simpsons... I feel like when I'm old and can't remember my own name I'll still be able to conjure up these tunes.

Just wanted to say that yes, while X-Men sold the most comics of a single issue, that just glosses over a whole lot of other reasons why it did. Being popular helped, but it was also released in the middle of the comic speculation bubble, being branded as Issue #1, and having 4(!) Variant covers. All this means that while it sold a lot, that was more because individual collectors were buying the issue in bulk in the hopes they could resale them for profit later (They didn't.)

Great episode. This show came at just the right time for me - X-Men was a community obsession with my pals, collecting the comics and playing the Marvel RPG in the garage as we tried to figure out life after High School. The animation is rough, but the stories and passion from the creators is evident - Similar to the ExoSquad show.

I can't put into words how hard I fell into the X-men animated series pit back when it aired. I had it bad. I actually took part in a debate my 2nd grade teacher proposed of "Who would win: X-men or Power Rangers?" (X-men, obviously.) Pryde of the x-men is a phenomenal episode (We'll ignore Wolverine's terrible Australian accent.) I was lucky enough to find it on VHS at some point in the 90s. Still no idea where I got it, but it is a treasured artifact. Now...if I only had a VCR.

Good video boys! X-men TaS was probably the most excited I'd ever been for a cartoon show. Back in the days of fresh episodes I would ban in-coming calls lock the door, and if you wanted to hang out you had to sit quietly and not ask stupid questions. Sure i was a bit of a spaz back then, but i just loved those X-men!

I'm a bit surprised you didnt mention the main reason the Xmen 1st season cartoon was so successful..the cards..the collectors Xmen cards...along with POGS those cards were the reason to even go to school to see what cards you could trade w your friends..and kept you watching the cartoon..I remember the infinity gauntlet card was highly sought after..that and Psychlock..although I think the latter was more of a demand due to art design and young hormonal boy issues lol

It's funny, that Pride of the X-Men pilot aired so rarely that for a long time I thought scenes from it were from my dreams, and I mixed parts of that episode in with parts from the [almost equally rare] episodes of Spiderman and His Amazing Friends that guest starred the X-Men. It's crazy to think how it was only a couple years between when that pilot aired and when the 90's cartoon premiered; back then it seemed like a lifetime

This was a very well done adaptation of my favorite comic book line. I was very surprised at how good it was due how so many properties usually softened by the second season, like TMNT. It did become obvious in later seasons that the quality had declined.

I remember when this came on I think I was in 2nd grade and it’s always been hard for me to wake up early on any day and this cartoon only came on Saturdays. I loved this series and I remember only a couple episodes aired and then it was reruns for years. It was sort of like the Rugrats cartoon which we only got one season of and we had to wait years for a new episode. I remember when the X-Men changed its art style and I tuned out.

The main thing I remember about the blizzard of 93 was that the power went out in the middle of a new episode and that was literally the only time I had control of the TV. Saturday from 11-11:30. Just to watch X-MEN. After that it was literally whatever my lil sister and mom wanted. I was grown when I finally binged all the episodes miss. I even got to stay up late to watch the wepon Xand dark Phoenix specials that came on late night specials with spider man 2099.

Okay, so it's been two years since you asked that end question, and my brain has been working non stop to create a perfect mashup of all three theme songs. So far, it's meshed the instrumentals of Power Rangers with X-Men and is working on setting the Mario Bros. lyrics to the hybrid melody. I've asked my brain to stop many times and it just replies, "lol, nope."

I never became a huge X-Me fan, but this show introduced me to all of these characters for the first time. The last season's animation stunk. As I recall it started to reflect the lower budget of the Fantastic Four's show. Funny, I had or actually still might have that single pilot episode on a store bought VHS somewhere.
