@@everythingnuclear7209 you're a hero . I live a mile from the RNLI lifeboat station in Dun Laoghaire Dublin Ireland . I've seen the lifeboat , the Anna Livia, go out . I'm old enough to remember hearing the maroons going off too .

Brave men and women who ask for nothing but give their all. I have dived on many wrecks around the Cornish coast. One of the saddest is the Bay of Panama. It had run aground just yards from the shore but due to a blizzard that was blowing off shore and the darkest night in memory. The crew thought they had foundered on the rocks several hundred yards from the shore so they took to the rigging to await first light, and as the boiling sea looked at smashing the hull. They hung there awaiting rescue. Come morning a "Breeches Buoy" was set up but alas the crew had been frozen stiff to the ropes and had to hacked down with axes. If life boats had been available then they would have probably all been saved. Massive respect and thanks to all the brave men and women of the RNLI.

My son lives on the first Watson motor power in 1925 built in Cowes and used at Portrush N Ireland. Absolutely beautiful with hand written plans and manuals.

I saw documentary years ago bout the RNLI it was soon after the war in the Falklands, right after midnight in the middle of the winter when the lifeboat men where called, a young bloke got out of bed go ready kissed his wife looked at his two young children n went out the conditions where HORRENDOUS mountains of sea n bitterly cold, Yet him n others like him did the same to go out risk their lives to save an Argentinian boat sailors from the same country that not long B4 where killing their own country people, If you have no deep respect for these men You have No respect for nothing on this earth, they will try n save Anyone no matter their religion colour race or anything else, all they care for is to save lives God Bless n look after them all

From a fisherman in a previous life, although I never needed assistance, it was always nice to know that the RNLI was there, especially on those mornings when you were shipping green water over the wheelhouse roof leaving the harbour.♥️

what a great tribute salute

My great grandfather was coxwain of the Bridlington life boat and a life boatman from the very early days of the 1870s. As your film shows in those days men went to sea to rescue sailors in distress in what was nothing more than an over sized rowing boat, today they put to sea in hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of boat with every piece of high tech equipment on board. Launching the boat in the late 19th century took a long time and was hard work, today although over a hundred years on its made easy with modern machinery . However in parts of the country my own for example I find it somewhat of a joke to see how long it takes to launch all this very expensive kit.

Wonderful Doco and Men and Women.

These fellows are all heroes, no matter, if you look at british, french, dutch ,german or every nation on the world! It´s realy interesting to see the technical evolution of the service, really much similar to the ships of the DGzRS.

As an island nation.. I can not understand why Life boats are not government Funded?? Why do they have to rely on brave volunteers! The ought to be paid a fortune for what they do!! Heros!!

They don't want government funding. As a volunteer organisation they are the oldest life saving group in the world and are proud of their independence.

Hazel Walsh pretty good reason for most things. Were an island of animal lovers but we don’t centrally fund the RSPCA..... Also can you imagine the last period of economic austerity? It’d have collapsed by lack of government funding

Because by doing so, you surrender ownership of something that is not yours in the first place. In the Penlee example, by the time the captain of the coaster realized he needed the tug, distance precluded this option, previously offered.

The RNLI should receive a substantial amount of funding from the government if they already don’t, I believe that they are still run on charitable donations but provide a service to all those in peril on the sea that should be provided by our country, in addition to the coast guard, after all we are an island race and without are seafarers we would be a lesser nation.

The RNLI have repeatedly turned down Government funding for several good reasons, not least of which is that Government funding usually comes with strings attached, which in its case would involve the organisation having to cede managerial and operational powers over to some government department which would wield considerable powers over all aspects of its operations. It could also face cuts to its funding or services depending on which way the political wind is blowing The main reason the RNLI isn't government funded is simply because it doesn't need to be. They receive enough funding from public donations there is no need for the government to step in.

This is a worthy cause to give money too!

The Greek ship at around 40:00, I can't help but wonder why not stay on there own ship till better weather? I may be wrong not it seemed to be beached on a sand bar so it wasn't on its side or smashing on rocks.

Of course, but in such serious conditions, with possible 60 foot waves and 100 MPH Winds, its best to get everyone off in case it does capsize, even if on land could cause serious injury to those being thrown around inside the ship, or even possibly overboard.

I'm not a believer but these men truly do act the way the the Bible says they should. Too many lip service hypocrites in churches in my opinion. Most Bible bashers I've met a very different from their so-called beliefs as soon as money is involved

The lifeboat men are an exeception, its the committees who run the rnli, that are the problem.

It's run by one committee headed by Sir Tim Laurence. They leave each station to get on with as they please. They are not a problem. On another note I would like to point out that it's not the lifeboat men as you put it. Woman have been part of the crew for many years.

It would have been interesting to learn about any discussion/legislation around the switch from wooden boats (with seemingly a wood from every colony plus 'good old English Oak') to steel. Diesel seems to have won out for power, but no rationale is given for the change from wood to steel. An opportunity missed.

According to Wikipedia the main series of steel life boats came shortly after the PenLee disaster she was a wooden hulled boat.

As the RNLI are paid for from public donations why does the "Home Office" have the right to order them to be a taxi service for the illegal immigrants coming over the channel. I was told this on an email reply from the RNLI to ask if it was true. I have now changed my will in favour of the "Air Ambulance"
