The History of the PATH - The Best Way to Go from New York to New Jersey

In this video, I explain the entire PATH system and its long, winding history from the H&M Railroad to the PATH we know today. With 2 terminals in New Jersey and 2 terminals in Manhattan, the PATH is one of the easiest, quickest and cheapest ways to get from New Jersey to New York City, and is utilized by millions of commuters every year.

A few more facts: The Grand Central extension was partially built and is now a pedestrian tunnel extending a couple blocks north of the Herald Sq. subway station. Until 1967, the segment between Journal Sq. and Newark was jointly operated with the Pennsylvania RR. There were no turnstiles at Harrison and Newark and an extra fare paper ticket was required for those two stations. The tunnels to the old Hudson Terminal were placed on temporary elevated structures during the digging of the foundation of the World Trade Center. In the 70s, there was serious talk of extending the PATH to Plainfield but it never happened.

Another neat fact is that Exchange Place had to be heavily modified after 9/11. PATH did new deep level excavation work to accomodate new switches since EP was never meant to function as a terminal.

When I was last there in 2010 19th Street station could still be seen from passing trains, it’s typical H&M columns and arches painted white, and some sort of plant installed in the station. During the rebuilding of the World Trade Center the remains of the tunnels which led to the old Hudson Terminal could be seen for a while. I don’t think anything remains of Newark Park Place, Manhattan Transfer or 28th Street Stations. Do the two large lift bridges which the line passes over between Journal Square and Newark ever still open? I never saw them open, and they look very old.

With the completion of the new United terminal A at Newark, the transportation link .. bus to airlink to train station to NY Penn station is lengthy and inconvenient. Your video gave me the idea to taxi or Uber to Newark Penn Station and take the Path to NY.

Great topic, and pretty good video. Just some minor tips: always be clear about the year of an event ("In September of that year"... which year?). Also make sure still image sizes match when showing side by side. Keep these coming, though!

Good stuff, though as a non-American I find it hard to distinguish between a spoken 'Newark Penn Station' and 'New York Penn Station'. I dare say locals don't have that problem!

Many years ago late at night I knew someone on an Amtrak train who got confused and disembarked at the wrong Penn Station. The announcement of New York and Newark PENN STATION sounded alike.

I noticed that too, last time I rode it. Path is a good name for it. A path is something you walk on. If you're in good shape, you can go 4 mph on a path. 🙂
