7:45 In fact, there are a few instances where you can get 11 coins instead of 10. In Battlerock Galaxy Mission #2: Entering the Battlerock. Before using the pipe to enter the fortress There are two blocks, the right one is the coin block. Turns out the one with the coins is close enough to the ground that you can jump fast enough to get 11 coins (It's not impossible with Mario but it's really hard.) In Dreadnaught Galaxy Mission #1: Infiltrating the Dreadnaught there is a coin block on a platform to the right after climbing to the top of the destroying platforms but before taking the launch star. Jumping fast enough gives you 11 coins. In Dreadnaught Galaxy Mission #2: Dreadnaught's Colossal Cannon, when you have defeated the two octopuses, the bridge falls, the next platform has 2 blocks, the right one held the coins. guide the bob-omb under the block and jump, you should get 11 coins.

In SMW you can get a block down to 1 coin left (let the timer run out), and then double-hit the block (hit it with both Mario's head and a shell at the same time). This will cause the timer to underflow back to 255 and you can get more coins as if the block was new. Also all multicoin blocks in the same room use the same timer, so you can hit one to start the timer and then the next one will only have one coin by the time you get to it. You can do this in Donut Plains 2 and I think a couple other levels as well.

Multi-coin blocks in Super Mario Advance 4 no longer limit the max to 11 coins like in the original SMB3; I recall getting up to 17 or 18 from ones right above large Mario's head but don't know what the theoretical max is. This made getting 44 coins in stage 1-4 a lot less strict, and getting the bonus 3up for hitting 110 coins in one of the e-Reader levels might have required getting more than 11 at least once.

I don't know if it works like this in all the games, but in SMW all the multi-coin blocks share a single timer. Meaning if you can hit more than one, only one of them will time out. The timer then restarts for the other one as if it hadn't been hit yet. You can test this pretty easily by having two multi-coin blocks and kicking a shell that bounces between them. Mario RPG also has multi-coin blocks, including one infinite one in Bowser's castle.

In Super Mario Maker 2, all multicoin blocks are hard capped to 10 coins, regardless of game style. This is necessary because there is a "clear condition" where you can optionally make someone collect all the coins in a level before finishing it, and that counter considers a multicoin block to be worth ten coins. (Launchers with coins inside are also worth ten coins.) I do not have the original SMM with me to check what its coin blocks do, but I would not be too surprised if they were also hard capped.

Couple of Addendums: 1. In New Super Mario Bros 2, the wearable gold brick block runs out after 100 coins, not 30 2. In Super Mario 3D Land, there is an infinite Coin block in an in-level mystery box in 1-3. There is no maximum, but my personal best is around 63 coins button mashing. 3. In Super Mario 3D Land, there is also a notable coin block in 1-4's Mystery Box. I don't remember it being anywhere else in the Mario series, I could be wrong. But there's a 30-coin 3 wide ? Block in that mystery box A. Also while not a coin block, in 3D Land, there is A possible Golden Mystery Box with 15 Tanooki Suits and a P-Wing, that was the potential to wield 150 coins in 10 seconds, assuming you were wearing a Tanooki Suit when entering

8:55 - Nathaniel Bandy claims that the block in Chain-Link Charge has a finite but absurdly large amount of coins? (I'm not too sure about that claim, though...) Also I wonder where the other ones are besides 3-2 and 3-4?

I gotta say, I have so many people that I admire in the speedrunning community, but Kosmic is in my top alongside SummoningSalt and Karl Jobst. I get excited whenever you guys upload, and this type of videos are my favorites, in depth analysis and history, so much research and love put into this. Thanks so much for everything, my man!

once i went into 2-1 as small mario, picked up all 4 powerups, and got hit 4 times. i picked up the first powerup, then got hit later after i 8000 kicked, so i picked up the second powerup, then i got hit by the piranha plant as i was trying to get the third powerup, so i picked it up, then i got hit by the koopa right before the 4th powerup, so i got that last powerup then got hit by the last piranha plant because by keyboard didn't sense my inputs

The reason we collect coins is to get 1-Ups, but extra lives are so common in every Mario game since Mario 3 (possibly with a few exceptions, like the Mario Maker games for example) that collecting coins is practically pointless :(
