The History of the Irish Flag

Ah the flag of the Republic of Ireland, one of the newer additions to the tricolour club. Not to be confused with that of the Ivory Coast or even Italy. The history and symbolism of the Irish flag go back to the rebellious nature of its native Gaelic population, as well as the orange of the Dutch-loving Protestant populace who entered the country through the Ulster Plantation in the 16th and 17th Century.

White is the colour of peace. The Irish tricolor is really supposed to symbolize a united Ireland in which Catholics (green) and Protestants (orange) would live peaceably side by side.

It certainly was not influenced by the flag of Newfoundland. First off, that green, white, and pink tricolor is *not* the flag of Newfoundland. The real Newfoundland flag has justly been described as 'a Union Jack gone psychedelic'.

Secondly, the Newfie tricolor was imitated from the Irish one, not the other way round. It is supposed to symbolize peace (white) between the Irish (green) and the English (pink).

As fitting as the Tricolour is, I wish you guys had gone with the green field and harp :( Nothing seems quite as Irish to me. Then again, I'm just a filthy Englishman, so what business do I have to tell you what to do with your country anymore? Sorry about the centuries of oppression and abuse by the way - that was a dick move on our part.

LoZ Collector No need to apologise bud. The issues are between nationalists and unionists in the North. The Irish in the Republic and the English have no problems with eachother anymore. As for the flag... I agree, the Harp is distinctly Irish that's why I like to use it. The tri-colour can sometimes be mistaken for the many similar looking flags like the Ivory Coast flag or even the French and Italian flags.

The flag with the harp was originally "St. Patrick's blue", and St. Patrick wasn't related to green. The flag was then changed by nationalists to green for their cause.

correct the national colour of Ireland was blue as in St Patrick's Blue. the Order of St Patrick was not a loyalist protestant order rather it was a part of the British Honour system of Knighthoods for those of Irish origin, akin to the Order of the Thistle for those of Scottish origin. furthermore, its regalia was in the aforementioned St Patricks Blue the colour of the plumes of the Irish Guards. The order ceased with the treaty which gave the Irish Free State its independence so that now Northern Irish are made Knights of the Order of St George and St Michael.

Actually the green harp flag was the banner of Owen Rory O'Neill who was giving the English crown trouble at the time. The flag he used was a harp on a green background. It's true however that blue was the original color of Ireland relating to st Patrick, but the Irish changed it to green in a act of defiance agasint the English over 900 years ago.

When I was living in Ireland I felt amused by the thought that green was because the country is the greenest place I've ever seen, white was to be the color of the Irish after thousands of years without much sunlight, and orange the color of the hair of many of its people. I know that it's silly, but it was entertaining when I first heard it.

My ancestors came to these United States from Ireland either in the late 18th or very early (pre-famine) 19th centuries.

English was never really used outside the Pale until the late 1800's as far as I'm aware (barring the plantation towns like Youghal or the ones in Offaly, and obviously the 4 Protestant counties in the North). So English never was widespread throughout the country until after the famine (genocide) when the Gaelic culture was almost too weak to survive. There had been previous efforts to stamp it out but it never worked until the English enacted the worst atrocity ever carried out on the island

Great video ! Family is part Irish - We always heard that the tricolor was designed in 1798 or so in France itself for the United Irishmen and that it was made of silk and sent to Ireland along with weapons and that it was designed by the Grand Orient Lodge of Paris and first flown over 33 the mall in Cork..To this day, well three years ago anyway I heard in S.Ireland that a lot of Irish are uncomfortable with the flag and flying the flag around homes and shops is not all that common. Germans are the same way ( part German too) because of the gold/"yellow" color and seeing it as a flag of defeat vs black/white/red.

I thought the traditional Irish color was blue and green was just the color of the nationalists. On the coat of arms it’s the golden harp on a blue shield and on the flag of the royal family it shows the Irish harp on a blue background is it wrong ?

I got to your video while trying to invent a HYPOTHETICAL [?!] flag of all the British Isles!!! I had a relatively tiny Mann ‘three legs’ in the middle, with also the Welsh dragon there too but a bit bigger. Then I divided the rectangle of a flag equally into three parts emanating from the Manx’s three legs ; on each of these three parts I put as far as possible ( let’s say the wind was blowing out of view small parts of each!) - simply the Irish Republic tricolour, the flag of St George for England and the flag of St Andrew for Scotland. But I got stuck for what to do with the flag of St Patrick. Mustn’t leave him out or I’ll have an Orangeman on my tail. How can I get him in without spoiling the Manx three legs pointing out to each part?

Very interesting 👍 I'm sure most Irish people today if asked would prefer a new Irish flag like the one of old, all green with the harp in its center because the orange (like it or not) is the British prods in the North of Ireland Would LOVE to see a new flag that represents the 32 counties Ireland Anyone agree?

No. Our forefathers fought and died under the Tricolour, and we have lived under it happily all our lives with it being a symbol of peace between people of all backgrounds. It will not be changed, and any attempt to do so is treachery.

I can understand that the Irish were trying to unify the Catholic and Protestant Irish against the English, but it still seems strange to me that since the fighting ended up being largely Catholic vs Protestant that the Irish would keep orange on their flag, especially given how closely the Loyalists in the north were connected to orange.

When padrig perse first rose the tricolour over the Dublin Post office you can clearly see it is orange at the mast first then white and green, just wondering when they changed it to green at the mast first. Recently seen the video proof of the flag being first raised on a TV show Ireland a 1000 years of history and you can clearly tell orange is at the mast first not green, even though the video is in black and white it is very easy to tell orange is at the mast first not green. The TV show is on Sky TV if anyone would like to see it.
