    Ive watched the film flying scots man. And felt obree's pain with mental health and bullies. Obree owns a part of history as people look back at the hour record breakers. God bless 👏👏

    Obree is the unsung hero. Home made frames. Fighting depression. Invents two new positions and gets banned. No one else did that.

    I'd like to see any rider today attempt the world 1 hour record on a bike from the 1970's; a genuine bike from the seventies. Not just the same basic shape but also just as heavy.

    Because he made it himself. As far as track cycling goes, weight isn't the paramount priority- aerodynamics, geometry and stiffness all take precedence over weight outright. Obree was doing this on a bit of a shoestring budget, I'd imagine that he'd thought of using Ti, but it was prohibitively expensive (and had very limited tube shapes other than a perfectly round cylinder) for the slim gains it could offer him.

    Actually the bike was much lighter than that- around 12.5 lbs (5.6kg). It was made of steel as well. I don't think colnago was doing anything with Ti until the mapei dream days of the late 1990s. (doesn't want to let me post a link, google up "merckx hour bike" and click on the classicrendezvous page). -Dan.

    The guy who has the current hour record used a heavier bike than even Eddy Merckx used. This is because the current record holder used heavy disc wheels intentionally to increase the rotational momentum of the wheels. So you don't need a super light bike to win.

    Correct once a heavier object is in motion it takes less energy to keep it moving! Light bike and wheels are great for accelerating and going uphill but shouldnt help otherwise, indeed on the flat they hinder. When I changed to a lighter Alu frame from steel way back when I experienced easier climbing but worse flat time trial results!

    1stPlaceDirector That is correct because it is an indoor track and fixed gear racing which means no head wind of 25 km hr pushing you back . 10 kg bike is more than enough for Pro riders there is zero reasons why UCI has a 6.8 kg limit. The only benefit of a light bike is during 25 km hr head winds you will obviously feel the difference between a 6.8 kg vs a 14 kg alloy bike ( the one I train on). I would be embarrassed calling myself a pro cyclist riding a 6.8 kg bike lol.

    That said, Boardman clearly put out more sustained power, given that Merckx's record was set at altitude.

    You are wrong. Boardman did 400w avg, Mercx 480w. Boardman used a lot of aerodynamic tricks to get the record, and also probably had a more aero position. Mercx used nothing, no tt suit, no helmet, unmodified bike. The helmet alone yielded Boardman 1km more distance, watch "The final hour"

    This has been proven as bs Grahame Obree was just that good. yes he was pushing out fewer watts. but his upper body was straining the whole time. Super man position only saved 10 watts.

    he didnt have the funding, he built the bike himself however he was given one on race day but it was too heavy so he used his but swapped the wheels

    Boardman's aero helmet ride "beats" Merckx's non- aero leather hairnet ride by 10 meters. Apples to apples? I'm not buying it.

    Silly to say people can't innovate beyond a bike design from 1960s/70s Eddie Merckx bike would have been an innovation on the first attempts.

    All the early bikies including Anquetil and Merckx were not specialist track riders - most of the later ones were not either. The pro ranks riders do it for kudos mainly after the road season is coming to a close or before the 6 day season.starts for those roadies who have a flair for the track. The point is that Merckx in 1972 got the Hour record in October after a full road season that he won The Tour de France and Giro and 4 other classics ( and many other lessor events) So, no track specialism there 1972 then.The other point is unless you have a very ameniable sponsor - there is no money in it ! The Hour Record is a cinderella part of the racing profession. Amateurs generally have no chance as they do not have the incentive to train purely for this record. Obree was a limited exception. 59 kilo's will be reached eventually but not until a price tag is attached for it. Until then Chris Boardman's all time record is still the benchmark to aim for.(over 56 k's in 1996)

    I do believe Eddy Merkcx was a very accomplished track rider, winning numerous six day races with Patrick Sercu amongst others..

    why did obree use a steel frame bike?it seems they would have had titanium at that level of biking.

    After 28 years and all the advances in sports science, training and nutrition, if mercx was beaten by 10m, it only goes to show what a specimen he was

    Unless you're interested from an amateur perspective of the bike... It's mostly dictated by a lot of boring UCI rules that have come and gone over the years. Don't go there!

    The UCI are so backward with their thinking….. imagine formula 1 still racing using Jackie Stewart’s car…. Surely technology advances is the way forward. Followed Boardman and Obree from their time trial days in the Uk and they had some awesome battles. The guy from Cervelo who states that Graham obree wasn’t as physically talented as other riders obviously doesn’t know a lot about Obree. He was an awesome athlete and a hero of the ordinary British club cyclist 🚴‍♀️👌🏽👌🏽

    Aurélien Bonneteau set a new Unfaired Recumbent One Hour record of 52.074 km so its the exact same speed as a recumbent race bike the m5 is the fastist recumebent wats the farstist racebike anybody know, i know bike cars are 35% farster then a bike

    90 ml/kg/s.....420 watts for an hour....."similar to top sportsmen". Now he has osteoporosis to the degree of a 75 y/o? How strange.

    the biggest fiasco is cycling is the 100 year old ban of recumbent bicycles by the tour de france. if not for that simple decision, at least a substantial minority if not the majority of racing bikes would be recumbents because of their confirmed aerodynamic superiority. after all, the outright speed record on flats is 79 miles an hour by a streamlined recumbent. yes, 79 miles and hour.

Currently, that record is 83.1 miles an hour as held by the Dutch-made XeloX3, but now there's a new challenger from the U.K.: the Arion 1. Made up of eight engineering students, the University of Liverpool Velocipede (ULV) Team is designing the Arion 1 to reach speeds of more than 90 miles per hour. Currently in the design stage, the Arion 1 represents the team's hopes of taking the world land speed record for human-powered vehicles in both the male and female divisions. In appearance, the Arion 1 looks less like a bicycle than a futuristic sex toy. From the outside, it appears to have neither wheels nor a driver. But looks can be deceiving. The Arion 1 is actually a bicycle encased in an aerodynamic shell that has been designed, much like an airplane's wings, with an inverted teardrop shape to allow it to cut through the air as easily as possible. It's thanks to this shell that the ULV Team believes that the Arion 1 will be able to break top speeds, while also protecting the rider inside from getting bugs in his or her teeth.     All true, but the Tour de France etc are not just "cycle" races. Pro racing concerns itself with the sport of "safety bicycle racing". As such it is controlled and constrained by rules just like any other sport. Pro road racing is defined by air resistance - it sets the tactics and flow of the entire sport. Recumbent racing would be something completely different. It might be great, it might not - but it would certainly NOT be bike racing as we know it.

    well i rekon they should use standard racing bikes, the old ones that are 10% slower the ones we use there all useing 10k bikes and up they all should be standard to give guys like uss a chance that don't have all the big bucks .

    Yes recumbents are faster under most conditions, but as Daz alluded to they would change the dynamics and strategy of racing. The goal of racing is speed, but speed isn't all there is to cycling. Similarly, football teams would score more often if the goals were twice as big, and auto racing would be even faster if jet and rocket propulsion were allowed...yet those ideas would also change the sports fundamentally, probably for the worse. Most fans would probably find it much less entertaining to watch people race while lying down, as opposed to seeing the fluid motions of climbing and sprinting on an upright. Not to say recumbent racing isn't a sport in its own right, but I think it's good for the sake of professional cycling that they never caught on.
