Sensational She-Hulk was SO GOOD! Not only did she regularly break the 4th wall, she even broke across pages. There was one issue where She-hulk was having a conversation whilst walking and the action carried all the way across a double spread page of those ads they had in comics in those days. Sublime!

Dick Grayson (Robin) was introduced (like you said) to make the comics more appealing to younger readers. And he was around for such a long time before spinning off to The New Teen Titans and then to his own books (Nightwing, Grayson agent of Spyral), that we don't even register that he was originally created for a marketing purpose.

They had Robin solo comics in the 1940s and early 1950s. He was the star of his own solo series in Star-Spangled Comics that ran from 1947-1952. DC reprinted nearly all or all of that run in its Archive series years back. I've got those volumes.

In some ways: the death of Jason Todd was the audience, finally, reacting/responding to that. (👍)

I once worked with a WW II vet who sid that soldiers were given free comics on occasion and they were traded among other soldiers - except for Capt. Marvel comics. Soldiers held on to those as they were favorites of many GI's. Another stellar episode!

Also worth mentioning is May-day Parker, the Spectacular spider-Girl. She was the first female Marvel hero to have a 100 issue run.

I 100% agree with you on Spider-Gwen. Love the colors, alternate take on the universe, their shuffling up the characters in their universe and changing their stories but not in a way that makes fans hate it....etc. just a great story and character

In the comics Spider Gwen actually has converse for her shoes, it was Into The Spiderverse that gave her the ballet shoes. I like the converse look more cuz it holds that punk style and it reminds me of the first Andrew Garfield suit where you can see his shoes still so it gives it a more home made feel.

I was hanging out for Mayday to get a mention, considering she remains Marvel's longest running solo female title with 100 uninterrupted issues. Sadly, May often gets overlooked despite her consistent quality and enduring series which lasted nearly 13 years.

Getting her own comic in the MC2 universe (Earth-982) cemented her as a prominent spin-off character, and she's since been in both Spider-Verse events and multiple other crossover stories. Also, let's not forget Web Warriors. Loved that book, and particularly loved seeing Mayday and Gwen being friends and co-workers.

We know with how she sleep but it doesn't make a superhero story. Northstar have much better stories and he is not "just a gay hero". Even Renee Montoya have best sorties...

Finally! A person who knows that Gwen’s superhero name isn’t Spider-Gwen, but just the comic’s title. Sick of people saying that Spider-Gwen is a silly name. No duh. It’s the comic title only.

I really appreciate how you express your opinions on diversity in comics in a positive way. It never seems forced from you and it's a really good standout from the sea of angry comic book fans who seem to recoil and complain at the sight of representation for people remotely different from them. This is a gross misunderstanding of why a lot of people have a problem with "representation". It isn't that they're trying to represent more people, that's good, it's the expectation they have that just changing an established character into a minority, which is more often then not done extremely poorly, is what people want. Miles Morales worked imo because it wasn't mainline Peter that got killed off and replace in a few months, it was Peter from another universe. Almost every more recent character getting this just comes off as lazy and exploitative, and they want people to write off people who don't like these characters painted as racist because it protects them from criticism. There are very few characters that work in spite of this, 2 examples in my opinion are the Spider-Man characters Miguel O'Hara and Miles Morales (Miguel more so, he differentiates himself in almost every way) but at the end of the day representation is a good marketing strategy, and if you can save on actual writing and make money by introducing new characters that are effectively the same as the character before instead of writing new and compelling characters, why wouldn't you?

I love this video. It really shows that sonetimes spinoff characters, even ones created for purely monetary reasons, can take off and become extremely popular in their own right. It really is up to the creative teams to flesh out the characters and make them more than just copies. As usual a well done, fair, and researched video.

I don't think there's any way they could avoid controversy with She-Hulk, which is why they've avoided her entirely. She was portrayed as a cheesecake pin-up as fan-service for young, white, horny, teenaged boys. With comics in the mainstream, there's no way they could get away with that now... but if they cast someone like Amanda Bingson in the role and make her a strong, powerful woman, the alt-right frog-posting ComicsGate turds will flip their wigs and start calling in bomb threats. There's just no way for them to win.

NoJusticeNoPeace She-Hulk could both do great, and be received well at the same time. I think if they didn't try the stock "strong female character archetype" a movie about her could really be good. I'd love a comedy/lawyer/action movie starring her and Bruce in the main roles. I don't know for sure but this could also possibly bypass the claim that Paramount has on a Hulk film.

I love Captain Marvel (Both) but I lean Mar-Vell because of Jim Starlin's run. Very sci-fi and triply but man does Jim Starlin make it visually interesting and the writing is pretty great especially when Thanos is being used.

Love Spider-Gwen. I have always struggled to really enjoy Peter Parker for some reason(heresy, I know), but find his spin-off characters to be far more entertaining. Both Miles and Gwen are great characters, and I love the alternate-reality aspects like Matt Murdock as Kingpin. Also, yeah, gotta admit that the novelty of Gwen-based puns like Gwenom are a bonus for me, lol.

I think you missed one of the most popular sidekicks of all time, with a story and background unlike any sidekick on your list... Harley Quinn, one of the few villainous sidekicks, who you could argue has surpassed the popularity of the character she originated from.

I will argue everyone wanted the classic Supergirl back after Byrne's lackluster version.

Miles is my favorite spiderman. However the comics didn't do him justice until like 2018ish cause Brian just didn't know what to do with him. But into the spider verse, best spiderman movie ever

I think Kate bishop is one of the best spin off characters imo especially in the 2012 Hawkeye run

I guess Monica isn’t technically a spin-off since she’s a new version of Captain Marvel (and was the only Captain Marvel at that time) and not a Ms. Marvel or a Lieutenant Marvel or a Captain Marvelwoman or anything like that. In contrast, Miles Morales is a new version of Spider-Man but there’s still an “official” version running concurrently, so that gives him “spin-off status” and not a “relaunch” or “remake”... one could argue Miles is an “Ultimate Spider-Man remake,”,and that USM was a Spider-Man spin-off.

One of my favorite spin off characters is Talon. The short run itself had a few ups and downs but I feel like a hero who is an escape artist is inherently cool and has potential.

Excellent look back at comics history - great look at this unique trope to (English?) comics. Some of my favorite characters have been spinoffs! Always look forward to your show! Wish you luck in this wonderful theme.

Jessica Drew and Kamala Khan are both favorites of mine. (Have you read Dennis Hopeless' Spider-Woman run?) Tying in with your final statement about how spinoff characters are just more successful than new characters, I understand Kamala was initially conceived independently of the Ms. Marvel namesake, and was then repurposed to take up that vacuum. Which makes a lot of sense - her series is clearly a labor of love, with the business sense second to the awesome character who doesn't even meet Carol for like 20 issues.

@Silver Star In 1977, a short-lived live action television series was produced called The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Nicholas Hammond in the title role. Although the series earned good ratings, the CBS Television Network canceled it after just two seasons, along with Wonder Woman, to avoid being labeled as "the superhero network." The series was broadcast only sporadically during the second season. Several episodes from this series were turned into full-length motion pictures outside the U.S. Three movies were released overseas: Spider-Man in 1977, Spider-Man Strikes Back in 1978, and Spider-Man: The Dragon's Challenge in 1981.

The way it typically worked is that DC made bank from spin-off "family" legacy characters while Marvel made bank from introducing new mutants. Which is why Marvel has significantly fewer spin-off characters than DC.

Christopher Johnson I really don't know much about Miracleman, so if you say it's history is complicated, then I defer to your knowledge. I guess discussing the comic has to start somewhere, and Alan Moore is always a good start.

The way Jeph Loeb draws supergirl only gives me impure thoughts and it scares me.

Supergirl's popularity had more to do with the Superman's 90s animated series portrayal.

Statutory Grape for sure! Love Superman tas- just finished a rewatch! supergirl the live action CW show is really bad. I like the supporting characters, and the other CW dc shows..but their take on supergirl can best be described as cringe. I think that word is over used nowadays.. but that show is hard to watch.

The Incredible Hulk tv show aired on CBS, not ABC. It was on right after The Dukes Of Hazard.

There is also a comic out there that shows two characters (I want to say it is an Avengers book with two lesser known Avengers characters,) talking about Wolverine who is passing through a room they are in, and one of the says "Wolverine is on this team too?" and the other character replies something to the effect of, "He's on every team." It was pretty funny.

Don't forget Toxin and Agent Anti-Venom. Honestly, at some point, the big two should consider a purge of overly redundant spin-off characters. Then again, that will be pointless as they'll just ressurect them again as they're somebody's favorite.

I'd say Green Lanterns & Flashes aren't really spin off because they usually take up the mantle of the respective names. Like when Hal Jordan was incapacitated (maybe), Guy Gardener became green lantern. Same with Wally West after Barry Allen died he became the flash. As for Daken I don't know he is one right?

The Green Lantern Corps is a pastiche of E.E. Smith's _Lensmen._ They didn't so much spin off the Corps from the original Green Lantern as simply expand their pastiche to include more of the original on which it was based.

Into the Spiderverse actually makes Miles his own character and it's great

Otto Binder is, to me, the reason those Captain Marvel books should be remembered. Their humor was hilarious, almost satirical. (As a glance at almost any cover will tell you). Binder was a terrific sci fi writer. He created I, Robot, the short story featuring Adam Link - which went on to influence the up and coming Isaac Asimov. Binder's scripts are the only part of that series that matter to me. When they did the movie version in 2019, I was fairly pleased, but I'd like to see a more conscious effort to translate the Binder humor in any subsequent efforts.

Nice and chunky episode at the time I'm usually up chilling. Perfect Sunday morning/Saturday night

I’ve jumped in and out of comics all through my years. Got pretty serious in the early 80s and again in the late 90s early 00s. ( is that what people mean when they say oughts?). One of the things that would ring my bell back then would be a good documentary about comics. Hard to find but every once in a while......... Then of course KZread became a thing right? Now there’s more vids about comics it seems than there are actual comics. ( I exaggerate of course). But there are some GOOD ONES. Like this channel. Fantastic stuff. Supergirl had backup stories in Action comics with Superman generally as the cover feature and semi regularly appeared with the Legion of Superheroes stores in Adventure comics in the 1960's and 1970's. She also sometimes appeared in Stories with Superman, also sometimes in Jimmy Olsen comics where she for a short time dated Jimmy.

The thing that really gets me about the new current Batwoman is that just like with Supergirl she's the cousin to the character that she's emulating

How come you did not dive into Image comics? Like for Spawn or Invincible. Or for 2000AD for Judge Dredd? Great video anyway. Love your work.

I like how he looked when he was Thor. I've only read Infinity Gauntlet with him so I don't know him very well.

PhantomKnight64 He was an interesting character, especially when he got his own series where he could really grow as a character. And I've noticed that the helmet he wore as Thor looks a lot like the one Jane Foster wore. That was a nice touch when creating the female Thor.

Thunderstrike’s son was a character for about a minute as well. I forget how he got the mace though. Edit: An embittered adolescent Kevin Masterson is featured in the Thunderstrike limited series. The character previously featured as an idealistic child is shown to have anger, behavioral problems, and disillusioned outlook on "spandex-covered glory hounds." He is given his father's enchanted mace by Captain Steve Rogers; which to their mutual disappointment triggers no change in the character (although he does receive an open invitation to the Avengers Academy, in which he is later seen arriving on their New Campus in California.) While on his way home, Kevin tries to save a mother and child from a rampaging Rhino and is transformed into a superhero. Kevin briefly battles the Rhino, and shortly after Kevin is defeated, he realizes that he is in his father's body. Mangog, a foe of Thor, resurfaces and threatens New York City. The young hero teams with Thor, to battle the monster. Kevin accepts his new identity as Thunderstrike, along with a new image, and continues his adventures under the mentorship of Brunnhilde the Valkyrie.

There was also an animated character called Web Woman. I heard that Marvel found out about her and rushed out Spider-Woman so Filmation could not use the name for her.

Batwoman was easily my favorite New 52 book. If anyone hasn't checked it out likes stories more on the spooky/occult side you should definitely check it out. JH Williams leaving the book when DC wouldn't let her get married was a big part of why I stopped keeping up with comics, it was just so disappointing.

Very generous of you to call these characters "spin offs" instead of what they are tokenized characters.

As a comic reader in the late 1970s, I rather enjoyed the early runs of She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, and Ms. Marvel, although I can't say that they were "great" comics. The interesting thing about DC's spin-off characters is that they tended to come about in different ways, instead of just doing the same thing with each of their major characters. Kid Flash was never really Flash's sidekick, although he did work with Flash on occasion, but a separate hero who operated on his own, and then later with the Teen Titans. Green Lantern spin-offs were basically limited to substitutes for Hal Jordan, until the Green Lantern Corps gained popularity, and then you had all sorts of alien Green Lanterns running around. The story of Wonder Girl is especially interesting. She was intended to be stories of Wonder Woman as a girl, much like Superboy, but when the Teen Titans were created, she was mistakenly assumed to be a character other than Diana Prince, and they never really corrected that mistake. And then there was Man-Bat!

DC should have renamed Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) "Captain Marvelous" instead of "Shazam" because Shazam is the name of the wizard who passed on his powers to Billy Batson. Renaming Billy Batson's alter-ego "Shazam" was a dumb idea because Billy would have trouble saying "Shazam" because that is his new superhero name and saying "Shazam" will keep making Billy transforming back and forth. DC needs to do their research on Billy Batson's superhero alter-ego's name change history on the internet and rename Shazam (Billy Batson) "Captain Marvelous".

The Incredible Hulk was aired on the cbs networks not abc.

Wolverine had a Daughter introduced a couple years before X-23 in the MC2 universe. Wild Thing. Also, what about all the different versions/spin-off versions of Thor? (I love Thor so I'm biased) haha. Loved this episode, and every episode!

I wouldn't call it a spin off , but Gary Gianni's Monstermen was included in the early Hellboy comic books and its my favourite comic series(that and Beasts of Burden) from dark horse even though it didnt even have an actual comic book run.

I didn’t know the history of hawkman and hawkgirl. I just read dark nights metal where they rebooted their origin and they are super ancient and i like they are being kept as important in DC comics.

Whenever Fantastic Four reemerge, one I'd really like to see - Take the "What If the Fantastic Four Had Different Powers?" version and begin with the original origin (OK, maybe backdate a bit and have Reed competing for the X-Prize instead beating Soviets into space) and show in detail how theit adventures and career developing differently because of the powers of Bib Brain, Dragonfly, Mandroid and Miss Fantastic.
