This game is an arcade masterpiece. Growing up in Western Canada, this game was *everywhere.* I remember kids would fight over who got to play as Cormano- he was the most popular and favorite character by far. There is a rare spinoff of this game called Mystic Warriors, which features ninjas instead of cowboys. Awesome review, Patman!

Konami really did like the cowboy motif at that time, didn't they? Lethal Enforcers 2 was also released around that time, and there's also Wild West Cow-Boys of Moo Mesa, which is regarded as the spiritual sequel to Sunset Riders.

You certainly did your research hard for this one to find out that Konami originally developed Frogger. KLOV has it plastered all over that it is created by Sega/Gremlin but in tiny print near the bottom, it does say, "originally developed by Konami". The fans of Track and Field might feel the same way since Konami licensed this to Centuri for USA distribution. Yes, I agree, Konami churned out many good beat-em-ups around that time including The Simpsons and X-Men. Actually Konami also did a wild western beat-em-up even earlier than this called Iron Horse from 1986. Your hero is in the back of a train and is trying to reach the engine in the front, but he's thwarted by bandits along the way.

I love playing this game...first played it on MAME in 2006, then for many years, I yearned to play an actual Sunset Riders arcade game in person. Eventually that moment came in 2018 when the Strong Museum of Play got a Sunset Riders 4 Player cabinet in their eGameRevolution. When COVID-19 kept me from doing the things I enjoy doing, I am thankful Arcade Archives put Sunset Riders for Nintendo Switch and PS4, me getting the former port so I can play it on the go. :) Cormano is my main, and will always be.

YES!! I been waiting for this one! Sunset Riders was one of my favorite arcade games and holy trilogy of arcades game I love running into in my childhood (TMNT, The Simpsons and this). I still vividly remember the day I came across it, I saw the cabinet and thought it would be a slow game due to using cowboys and enemies would come at you high noon style, my dad gave me a coin and I inserted it and had my mind blow at the intense gameplay and colorful characters! I never looked at Westerns the same again!! All the action of my dad's movies he enjoyed watching I got to live with this game and that fact that I live in Texas just brought this game to my mind constantly when traveling to historic places. Was lucky to find the Snes cartridge at a thrift store for cheap and recently got emulator to play it constantly on my phone. Never get tired of it and a classic for me and wish more people talked about, it's a forgotten classic!

Love yours Docs Patman, they always bring back fond memories. For me all the games you pick were from the golden age of gaming, you should do an episode about your favourite era of gaming and which games you were most fond of. I think from the birth of the Commodore 64 up until the PS2/Xbox 360 were the definitive years for gaming where by anybody could attempt to make their own game, independent developers were aplenty and creativity and originality were in surplus, sadly by the time the PS3 and Xbox 1 came the greed of Sony and Microsoft and their speedy release of ever more powerful hardware meant that independent developers couldn't afford or even keep pace with the giant companies leading to ever decreasing choices and originality in the market place. I'm so glad I was part of the original nerd collective when gaming was fun and exciting and also brought a lot of different people together in friendship (unlike the GTA V's and Call of duties communities which are just down right hostile). So thanks for keeping the golden age alive and bringing a smile to all true gamers faces. p.s the Amiga was my greatest computer of all time.

Thank you for the nice words. The Amiga was my favorite computer right next to the Commodore 64. The 64 to me has the edge just because of the vast amount of software that was available for it. I absolutely loved my Amiga though, the graphics the sounds it was just an amazing piece of hardware. I've been playing arcade games since the 70s so I really don't have a favorite era. It's all really good from the late 70s until the early 2000's I would say. How about you?

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries 100% agree with you, early 80's (C64, Spectrum ZX) up until early 2000 (PS2, Xbox One). I probably learned to type before I could write thanks to the Commodore lol. New games were released weekly for just a couple of pounds/dollars. Sadly when mass commercialism gets involved they ruin niche industries (which gaming was back then). Bring back Cinemaware, Ocean, DMA and mastertronic. Great memories for me playing the C64 with my brother and I imagine it's the same for many people of our generation. Your old pictures of you and your family always remind me of this. Long live the 1st generation of gamers!
