It always confused me in the classic series how most Diesels we’re described as rude and disrespectful when only Diesel, Arry and Bert were the only ones who never changed.

I think it's largely an artifact of Awdry's early portrayal of diesels since he was against the dieselfication of the BR, and in the early periods there were quite a few reasonable complaints, which can largely be summed up as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", thus he initially portrayed them all in a more negative light.

Britt, my respect for you just increased a decent chunk. Many years ago, I remember being on the old Microsoft Train Simulator official forums, when the discussion came up about Rusty, and the other narrow gauge trains. One of the forum members was a friend of the Awdry family, and wrote a letter (yes, with pen and paper) to Christopher Awdry asking questions about the trains. Christopher, at the time, helping in the construction of the various trains. In one of the letters, Christopher referred to Rusty as "She". This started a long argument back and forth, with the forum member writing yet another letter, and encouraging Christopher to chime in on things himself if he could. Christopher stated that his father, Rev Awdry, always described Rusty to him as being a female character, and noted that the name "Rusty" was unisex enough to work both for male, or female. Christopher noted that the first time Rusty was called male, was actually with the Britt Allcroft series, which Awdry was greatly annoyed by. Reportedly, Awdry himself brought this problem up with Allcroft, who told the Reverend that the show was being marketed more toward young boys, and not girls, and thus having a locomotive that was a girl wouldn't work. Besides, there were already two female locomotives (Daisy and Mavis), and correcting the error was just going to push production back, as they'd already recorded the voice-overs where Rusty was called "He". Interestingly, Allcroft did seem to acquiesce to Awdry's thoughts on the character, to some degree, by having Starr (the first narrator), affect a slightly feminine voice when voicing Rusty. In the end, though, the whole thing became moot, as by the time that any changes may have been made, viewers were accustomed to seeing Rusty as male, regardless of what the original creator thought. Note: The letters back and forth were scanned and uploaded to the forums. This all took place around 2001, shortly after MSTS released.

Rusty is an interesting character for sure. While I don't really like the larger scale Narrow Gauge models for having faces completely different from their smaller scale counterparts, Rusty is an outlier for having a gargantuan face on top of the different expressions. Still, the large engines are pretty good shape wise at least. Also I always liked that Rusty was gender neutral and kinda wish that stayed. Rather nice representation for those who are Non-Binary.

Edit: if you look at Rusty’s cab and wonder why it’s only open on one side, all of the Talyllyn stations are on the right side of the track so you only needed one door and much of the Coaches are locked shut on one side because only one side needed to be able to open. I haven’t visited the Talyllyn yet, and I’ve only heard about this a while back.

It was around that time that I had noticed that Rusty was never referred to as any gender pronouns in the show prior to that point, which was something I never even noticed until after watching Tuneful Toots. When Rusty was referred to as a male in Season 10, I was like "So now he's a boy? Make up your mind." Eventually, I adjusted to Rusty being male again from that point onward. I had no idea that Rusty was intentionally never referred to by gender-specific pronouns in the classic series.

So, I think we are talking about the same thing, kind of, CNC machine tools (such as a mill) use those motors controlled by a computer to move the work piece, the machine head, or both. There are commercial industrial applications for CNC machining because of their reliability and repeatability with little opportunity for operator error, as well as in smaller shops for prototyping and custom work because one can go from a computer modeled design to the physical end result with ease.

Rusty is one of the kindest engines on the Island. I love Rusty as a character, he's very kind, and the way Duncan behaved towards Rusty in the early episodes was disgusting. Apart from Edward, Rusty is up there as being the most kindest, and caring for passengers, and he always works hard.

It still confuses me as to why they changed rusty. Upscaling him is one thing but making his face to big and his proportions look weird he just doesn’t look the same as his season 4 models. I prefer the season 4 models in terms of the narrow gauge engines. They’re small and a perfect scale compared to the bigger engines like Edward Henry gordon and james

agreed. imo the small scale models looked better, mainly due to their faces and proportions but the large scale models just looked so wrong. the faces were weird, the proportions were weird, they just dont feel right to me

Trans Train Trans Train Trans Train I also prefer the smaller face version. After seeing this series, I'm tempted to try scratchbuilding the small scale models to run on my garden railway (minus moving eye mechanisms and smoke generators), although I don't know about the height difference between standard UK 0 gauge models and these, which could foul on several places. I'm also gonna rewatch Thomas again, because I've never got past season 9.

Rusty has always been male, to me. Even when I was a little kid. I've never considered him to be anything other than male.

I only wish that Rusty's large-scale model had the small face. Were that the case, he'd be spot-on.

I was never a fan of how they made his face bigger, it always looked so awkward to me.
