I love Robotech. It was one of my favorite cartoons ever. The story is complex and mature for the time, and Macek did an amazing job given the limitations. However, Harmony Gold has completely run the IP into the ground with a combination of greed, laziness and incompetence.

Slight correction: Comico published 85 Robotech comics rather than 36(plus the Genesis and Dana's Story graphic novels). They dd a fortnightly publishing schedule - Macross, then two weeks later Masters, and two weeks after that New Generation, and then repeat. They adapted each episode of the show into a separate comic, so Masters ended at issue 23 and New Generation at 25, and then finally Macross Saga at 36.

The focus seams to be on Macross, because Macross is the most popular of the part of Robotech and seams to be the one that the Anime Antifa seams to bet teh most out raged about. Comico's Robotech has 36 issues and one Graphic Novel. The others were separate with 23+I Graphic novel and 25 Issues each. Also missed were the Wildstorm comics (part of DC), who make 5 mini series in the early 2000's.

The legal battles between Harmony Gold and FASA/Catalyst Games are interesting because Harmony Gold may not have had the iron-clad sole distribution rights to the franchise because the agreement they had was with Tatsunoko, while the actual legal rights to the Macross property lay with Studio Nue. This allowed Catalyst Games (the company founded by Jordan Weisman, who had retained the rights to BattleTech after FASA folded) to legally bring the original mecha designs from Macross back into their game.

I came home from school one day back in 1998 and caught the closing moments of a show I had never seen before. "Coming up next time on the exciting, amazing adventures of Robotech." I rushed home from school the next day and never missed an episode from that point on. I fucking love Robotech.

Everyone has their entrance into anime; Robotech was mine. I remember waking up early in the morning to watch cartoons, and found a fighter pilot telling his steak to wait for him as he was called out to defend his home. He died that episode. My child mind was blown. How was I so affected by the actions of a character I just met? Why wasn't death a thing in other cartoons? *This* cartoon had a continuous story arc! Suddenly, without my realization, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and He Man had already become second-best. A few years later, I had all of my friends reading Robotech novels and playing the Robotech RPG, while I sought ought any anime I could find on VHS. Then came Akira...

The two biggest obstacles to there being more Robotech is firstly Harmony Gold themselves they can't decide what the hell they actually want to happen and secondly no company writer or anything/anyone else will work with them because of their reputation for being completely batshit insane and unreliably litigious.

Well said. Robotech changed my life as a kid & its messed what happened w/ liscensing but there are plenty of examples of publishers, game co.s, toy makers & movies prod.s overcoming these kinds of problems in the best interest of fans. Ill always be nostalgic for Robotech, but everything HG produced w/said liscense was garbabe & they've arguably squandered potentially the greatest anime liscense EVER for 30+ yrs. Maybe in 2021 once they R finally OUT of the mix, the embargo on anything Macross can finally exist in the US & be done justice

I saw a video by an actual lawyer & anime fan(i forget the link) but he actually broke down the court docs, many of which were sealed thru multiple arbitrations over the yrs & shed light on alot of rumor & misconception over the yrs. Namely how insidious HG's been w/ their lawsuits over designs they KNEW they didnt own after like 96' or sumthin. Every1 involved is DONE w/ them & the 2021 thing seems legit. I used 2 give HG a lil benefit of tha doubt & credit for bringin it to the US, but at what cost? At this point its good #% riddance.

So, I'm guessing that's why in 1994 Ninja High School went back to it's original publisher Antarctic Press because of Eternity being bought by Malibu / owned by Marvel. Because as the way Marvel does things Ben Dunn would have lost his ownership rights to Ninja High School.

Trivia: Macross #1's artist was Svea Stauch, Carl Macek's wife. In the fall of 84, HG tried to market Macross as a series of VHS OVAs that would be released with three episodes edited together into one feature. Only one was made before HG decided to go with the Robotech concept. Rick Hunter was Rick Yemada and Lisa Hayes went by her original name, Misa Hiyase.

Astro Boy was my first anime but Tekkaman Blade was what really got me hooked. Like Robotech, Tekkaman Blade had some pretty heavy themes for kids to wrap their heads around but hey, we handled it (still love it). My older siblings got me into Robotech/Macross after Tekkaman Blade disappeared from the TV. To me, what made the 'first season' are the characters, the drama, and mecha (Valkyrie kicks any mecha's ass). You've got all this visually stunning artwork, cool mechamorphosis, an extinction event that we somehow survived, a human/zentradi enemies-turned-romance with a baby...it beat the snot out of the boring cartoons that catered to kids/young teens. Kids in the late 90s and beyond will never understand the struggle; they had anime handed to them on a platter thanks to DBZ. Kids of the 80s/early 90s? With the exception of a few standouts (Voltron, He-Man and She-Ra for the nostalgia and John Erwin's VA!!), 'it's animated therefore kids will enjoy it' was our lot. Anime inspired the imagination. I'm grateful for Harmony Gold and the efforts from other dub companies to bring us what they could. The voice actors were awesome, too. Tony Oliver, Melanie MacQueen, Edie Mirman, Gregory Snegoff (his Kyron was legendary), Iona Morris, Barbara Goodson, Cam Clarke, Reba West (even though Minmei was annoying as all hell, she did have a sweet voice)...yeah.

I've been a fan of Robotech since it's original run on TV. The original 85 episodes were groundbreaking and amazing. But the fact is that Carl Macek had to shoehorn the story he was trying to tell into the pre-existing visuals. The Jack McKinney novels are the realization of that story. The TV show was the rough draft, the novels are the "real" story of Robotech. And before someone says "But Harmony Gold says....". Fuck Harmony Gold, it ain't up to them. It's up to the fans.

If I was an in a position to be an investor of sorts, like big West is now, I would see all this as a huge opportunity. Nothing is canon except the original series. The original toy line was missing its key element/money maker, the Valkyries. And especially if I'm already working with Harmony Gold on a current project, then it's probably in my best interest to fund a continuation of the original Robotech series and FINALLY release the Valkyries everyone has waited almost their whole lives for. Just saying, if I was Big West, that's what I would do.

Seeing the books for Robotech brought back a lot of memories. I remember my friends from primary school and I had gone to a different high school, and once I moved back close to our old neighbourhood, we all got back in touch and we played a series of games where our characters were part of a robotech unit protecting Australia from enemies from out of space. It was pretty awesome, and I think we got six or eight games done before we all had to do that adult thing called getting jobs etc. Great times, great memories before the internet became huge.

As someone who worked behind the scenes with Eternity Comics, Academy Comics and Harmony Gold, this was a very chaotic time. I felt especially bad for the woman (Jean Elane) who coordinated the Robotech titles for Academy Comics when their license had been unceremoniously yanked. I didn't even know what had happened until she began weeping over the phone. I was asking her about a new "Robotech" comics advertisement that Ben Dunn's company Antarctic Press was displaying in the merch room at an anime convention when the details all spilled out. It was an abrupt end to that chapter in Robotech's comic book history...

Thexsoar the Bearded - As much as I liked the show in my younger days. I recognize that the show being made of 3 diff anime lead to a mess of a story after part 1. I'd much rather see a reboot like the did with Voltron.

Love these videos. I had moved past Robotech story two decades ago, but these are a nice reminder of when it wasn't the current Charlie Foxtrot that Harmony Gold has made of it. To say nothing of the Bizarro World that the anime sequels became as Idols became the focus over literary everything else.

@@SecretGalaxyTV And they never really did materially update the Variable Fighter over all these years both in and out of narrative. Be it the original VF-1 Valkyrie, the VF-4 Lightning, the VF-11 Thunderbolt, VF-14 Vampire, all the way to the VF-27 Lucifer (the last production model to date, everything since the VF-27 have been experimental YF models), they all are the same fundamental concept of a fighter jet that folds out into a humanoid robot. Kawamori just nailed a perfect concept and design back then- he's designed nearly every one of them ever since the original 1982 show, he knows it isn't broken and doesn't need fixing.

There is no mention of the full-length animated feature 'Robotech : The Shadow Chronicles' made in 2006 by Harmony Gold, which picks up after the events of The Third Generation (Genesis Climber MOSPEADA) & incorporates minor elements of 'Robotech II : The Sentinels' into it's storyline. There was also a follow-up animated feature film in 2013 produced by Harmony Gold called 'Robotech : Love Live Alive'

Canon: Macross saga (anime), Malcontent uprisings ( US comic), Macross: Do you remember love? (anime), Macross plus (anime). Everything else (yes even Macross zero) can be used for future story fodder or be purged (especially Macross 7 and Macross delta).

Birthday come around and I go to a mall I believe on or near the Maryland side of DC. I see something called Suncoast video. I am confronted with rack and rack of VHS tapes. No overwhelmed bit a kid in a candy story. I get to the back corner of the store. On a double wide encap I SEE 85+ TAPES FOR ROBOTECH. I say the hell with it all and go to the food court and stuff my face with pizza and a gryo.

I still have all the novels. And if they aren't considered canon they should be because they're basically retelling the story verbatim up to a point at least. Then they get into the area past the series but still focus on what was given in the series.

Robotech is my favorite. The only thing I need from Robotech is the series that was put together. I only read the Macross era McKinney novels and loved them. They went in to more thoughts and feelings of the characters and some concepts not covered. I found some Robotech comics in a comic books store a few months back. I looked through them, and though they told an alternate version of the story, it looked really good and I wouldn't mind reading them. There are some comics that Harmony Gold put out that go with the series and I really enjoyed. I also loved the video games that came out on the PS2. Those HG comics and video games touched on some new and under developed characters that, to me, were brought in to the story and helped extend the universe.

sleeplessknight99 i only spent disposeable income in the new(er) RPG books because i thought it would be 'official' canon since Palladium was supposedly working close with HG writers of Shadow Chronicles. I still got the Macross II RPG books Palladium did in the 90s which sadly has an easier game system [i.e. the older one] to learn & use than the current Robotech RPG...

On Feb 3, 2007, at the Shadow Chronicles Movie Premiere Q and A, Carl Macek was asked if the Movie or the series was 'Canon' because the movie retcons the series so much. (The most obvious being that the Aurora was changed to Maia, and other ending details changed). Carl's response was that because books, movies, comics and TV all require a different type of storytelling, details have to be changed between the different formats in order to maintain a compelling story. He then said that they were ALL canon, just told from a different perspective. When asked to elaborate on it later, he was dismissive and said that all stories of Robotech are canon in the same way that both the Macross series and Macross: Do You Remember Love are both canon in Japan.

At the end of the day Harmony Gold litigation days are over since it was established that they were basically granted rights by owners who didn't own them in the first place according to the Japanese court findings 20+ years ago. The aribtrator rendered his findings and their suit against PGI (and by extension Harebrained Schemes) was dismissed with extreme prejudice.
