Saw Robotech for the first time in 1985 and was completely hooked by the third episode. What an incredible story! Never learned it was 3 separate series till 4 years later :)

Same here! My local station showed the complete first run just earlier than I got up for school at 5: 30 am. Got up early to watch it, that helped get me trying coffee for the first time, lol. Was lucky enough to start my first job in late '86 , so I could start getting some of the Matchbox Robotech toys as they went on clearance ( during the second "rerun" style run on tv ). Super lucky that my mom had gotten me the original Jetfire G1 Transformer, the Christmas of '85... Which I immediately remarkered the booster backpack with the U.N. Sacey kite! Good times (: The Comico comic book series was my gateway to the books. After the 1980's I didn't find hardly any of the toys, but kept my Officer battlepod, Hovertank, and VF-1S ( with it's box ) till a move about 20 years ago. Nowadays I'm slowly ( so slowly ) picking up a few key pieces of recent Macross branded stuff, though still have not gotten any of the transforming mecha. /:

I didn't learn that until the birth of the Internet on that dial up 56k BUT to my credit I knew that protoculture energy source was BS and the mounds that were the supposed SDF remains, more BS. Point is loved the macross arc and the mospeada due to more cool mechs and planes

For me, the first chapter is the only one I cared about because thos was the true "macross/robotech" chapter. The other ones are cool, sure bit I don't see them as belonging to that first chapter due to this.

Robotech was one of the most awesome things I ever saw on television growing up in the 80s. The stakes were higher than I'd ever seen in a "kids" cartoon.

Ah, Robotech and Voltron. What a time to be a small kid in the 80's.

I loved Transformers and GI Joe but Robotech was really the first cartoon to make me think and care about all the characters and story. Absolutely loved that show and rewatch it every so often.

Yeah, it wasn't until Exosquad that Americans got another truly reflective series that dealt with serious topics. This came out when many of those who would've seen Robotech as young kids were reaching the intended target age for Robotech in the first place, and that may not be accidental.

Robotech was a watershed series for me as a kid. Hard to go back to Saturday morning cartoons the same way after watching space battles where heroes I've been watching for weeks get shot down or die from internal injuries. Still love the series, still watch it again every few years.

While Roy and Ben's deaths were crucial to the plot, it was the story between Mirya and Max and Rick and Lisa that grabbed me and kept me coming back. I was always a sucker for star-crossed romances and especially for the "We were enemies once, and that's how I met your mother/father" angles. It eventually took me into the novels that were written AFTER Robotech ended that I found out what actually happened to Rick and Lisa . . . and the story didn't disappoint.

Yeah, I was watching it in the 1st grade and knew that it was doing something different that the typical after school cartoons wouldn't do....I soon realized that the anime styled art like Voltron, Tranzor Z, Speed Racer etc weren't afraid to kill off a character or planet.

I am still impressed at how they weaved 3 different shows into 1. As a kid, I know they were different animation styles, but they did a good job with the storyline to allow things to make sense. I had a terrible time catching this show. It was only showing at 6 or 6:30 am. That was when I learn how to program the VHS to record shows automatically -the bad old days when life was hard.

I totally remember seeing my friend's Jetfire and going "what the hell, this is clearly a Veritech!"

Me too! And i was lucky enough that my mom bought it for my Christmas present! Though it *looks* ( and is ) exactly like the original Macross/Robotech veritech, what you saw in 1985 was - that toy plane rebranded as Transformers G1's Jetfire ( Dan talks about it here).

Ah Robotech, such a beloved piece of my childhood in the 80's and pathway to my early geekdom. This show really is where anime started for me. Even as a kid the idea it had a progressing story was one of the big reasons I loved it.

Robotech prepared me for life, war, death, love, lose & hope. It came to South Africa in 1990 & I was 7 at the time

Jetfire introduced me to Robotech. I was part of the problem but I became part of the solution.

Robotech needs to be appreciated. The Macross Saga might just be one of, if the not, the greatest 80s cartoon for being so bold and telling an adult story. It's so impressive to see a show from this era legitimately putting more focus on character development and drama as opposed to trying to shove as many toys in your face as possible. The Macross Saga holds up incredibly well even by today's standards. Robotech is beautiful, bold, enjoyable and way ahead of it's time.

I loved Robotech in 85 and I still love it today. Minmei and Rick are my favourites by far.

I once took a vacation to San Diego and visited the USS Midway. While on the deck I realized I was standing on one of the elevators. All of a sudden I heard the Robotech theme in my head. Instant goosebumps!

Jetfire was a schizophrenic scale VF-1 Valkyrie: we all could see it plain as day, but nobody could explain it. The Revell Robotech model kits didn't look like the mechs from the show, even though the logo was clearly the same. You have just reawakened a 40-year dormant quadrant of my brain and solved some of the biggest existential mysteries of my childhood. I salute you!

This show blew my mind when I was a kid!!!

I am 50 years old and i'm proud to say that Lisa Hayes was my very first waifu back in '85 when i was a kids. she still has a place in my heart to this day.... To the Stars.

I grew up on Robotech through its first airing in the early/mid 80's in the US. I'm 44 now BTW. The dynamic of it bringing so much to the table and as a kid, I barely could take it. It was overwhelming. Watching a cartoon that had a love triangle, main characters die, mixed race couples, a cross-dressing character, etc....holy crap. It was awesome! So ahead of its time.

I didn't see much of Robotech on TV. What got me into it are the paperback novelizations by Jack McKinney. They were terrific, and smoothed out the story, and included scenes that were not in the series. They also provided a proper conclusion to the entire series.

I first heard of Robotech through my brother. He had the episodes recorded on VHS. It was 1992, and I was 12. The first Episode I saw was the one were the SDF1 was hovering over the city. It was Rick's first day taking over the Skull Leader. It was the episode in which Ben Dixon died. I saw it moving forward to the end of the Saga. While watching it, Rick always had flashbacks of Roy talking to him, and memories when he met Lin M. I recall, watching it, and saying to myself "I want to know more about Roy, and how he died". When I finished, I started from the beginning. It was like watching a prequel, and I was able to connect the memory moments. In a way, I'm happy I saw it in that specific order. It intrigued me more, and I wanted to know more about the characters and their history. Still one of my favorite, if not my favorite all time story.

This series had such a profound affect on me as a kid. I was around 9 when this was airing. When Roy Foker died I was like "wait...what?" as people just didn't die in cartoons. Still my all time favourite cartoon from the 80s and yes, that includes Transformers, He-Man, etc :D

I love the attention to "Star Blazers" Space Battleship Yamato!

this cartoon was a suprise i've watched since robotech first aired. one suprise was that they wern't affraid to kill off characers. Back when G.I. Joe would shoot down countless copters only to have a paraschute open and the pilot float to safety it came as suprise that people actually died no wonder the Joes couldn't beat cobra there was never any casualties.

Thanks for doing this one guys. I'm a life long Robotech fan; despite truckloads of cringey dialogue, the larger story that spans three generations was one of the most complicated and meaningful stories anyone dared to put to animation back in the 1980's. Can't wait for your follow up video.

Made a point of getting up super early in the morning to catch Robotech back when it was on. I mean, like ingrained into my brain to wake up, so that I didn't even need an alarm anymore (you know, the wind-up alarm clock type). Anyway, was a huge Robotech freak, watched all three seasons, had the art books, all the Palladium RPG books (yeah, Macross II as well)... but strangely, I never had any toys! Anyway, then some many years later, in the early days of online, I discovered the truth of Macross. I still hold fond memories of Robotech, and I know I always will. But... can't say I'm a real fan of the whole HG debacle in retrospect. Nowadays, I'm just a huge Macross fan, and there's so much more of it than back then, and man, sooooo many toys and such.

I was lucky to have such a good show to wake up to at 5: 30am. Loved the show and comic book series'. Would try to draw the mecha with my buddy Doug Overton. He had a real feel for the art style, I barely managed getting a fighter plane to look right in perspective, lol. Also have gone back and watched and rediscovered Macross in recent years. I was lucky to have a few toys back in the day, but my current "holy grail" item is one of the transforming Yamato toys ( v. 2 1/60 or 1/48 scale ) from Macross.

I remember getting into Robotech as a pre-teen and the fact that they didn't shy away from killing off main characters or having alien forces wiping out all life on planet Earth, really set it apart as a much more sophisticated story than what I had grown up watching (from Transformers and GI Joe to The Smurfs and Looney Tunes). I still love The Macross Saga storyline to this day and will watch the entire series all the way through every few years.

If you like Robotech, you owe it to yourself to watch Macross: Do You Remember Love? Its from 1984, but its animation is incredible. As much hype Akira gets for its animation, Macross:DYRL is vastly underrated.

Robotech was the GREATEST . It was a cartoon series that you had to watch every day and it actually delt with character death in cartoons.

I was introduced to Robotech by watching it with my young children. Back then I never let them watch anything without supervision. I have been enjoying Anime ever since.

I came to Robotech through the novels by "Jack McKinney" (Pen name of James Luceno and Brian Daley). By that time the cartoon was running on Sci-Fi (as it was known back then) in the AM on weekdays and I started watching it before school. They have parallel storylines, but the novels have some major differences (Protoculture is reimagined, there's a link/connection between the pilots and the mechs) and flesh things out more. I was (temporarily) out of toys @ the time, so I never had any Robotech stuff unless you count Jetfire as a sort of third cousin twice removed (on the Father's side).

Well said! I loved seeing Robotech in it's first run here. Read all the books and most of the Comico comic books over the years. Was lucky to have some of the Matchbox and other toys. Just recently reacquired a G1 Jetfire, let me say it is a brother to the Macross original - not any third cousin. lol, it is the same as the original from Japan ! ( since that time acquired and reissued by Bandai ).

Real talk. We need part 2. Like... NOW. I LOVE Robotech!

Gatchaman and Macross made anime popular in the U.S. But Macross really paved the way for anime as we know it

Oh the Nostalgia! My father got me hooked on this series with *books* Literal serialized novels. I'm glad you decided to do research on the Robotech (SDF) , seeing as I knew of the books, (when I was in my 20's) then later on with the series (anime) when I was in my mid 20's. I am now just starting my 40's and learning the history. MUCH appreciated!

I grew up in Peru, we had both robotech and transformers and i distinctly remember turning to my brother when jetfire showed up on transformers and being like "wtf thats a veritech"

I *loved* Robotech as a kid. Legit sobbed when some of those characters died, and that epic space battle in "Call to Arms" is still one of the most goosebump-inducing moments in television, IMO. That said, my gateway to anime was Star Blazers. Robotech did the "convert for a Western audience" slightly better, but it was still jaw-dropping as a child to see people actually *die* in a cartoon, real stakes, romance, and emotion; character arcs that played across the episodes rather than a reset button each day. I was hooked. And yeah, I bawled when Captain Avatar died. After Star Blazers came Astro Boy (1980), which again stunned me as a kid with its pathos (I think all kids should be shown that series as a gateway to discussing life issues with parents). Then came Robotech, and it capped both, IMO. Just mind-blowingly awesome. As an adult, I later discovered the truth about the creation of the show, and Macross itself, but to be honest, only the Macross part of Robotech ever really "clicked" with me as a kid, so no big loss discovering the others weren't really linked. And to be honest, I still think the Macross part of Robotech holds up as an alternate take on Macross; there are honestly some parts of Robotech's retelling that I prefer, and that definitely includes the music. Not that Macross isn't great, but Robotech will always have a nostalgic place in my heart... and between it, Star Blazers and Astro Boy 1980, I became an anime fan long before anyone knew what "anime" ("Japanimation"!) even was, and for that I'll be forever grateful to Harmony Gold and other studios who imported and "hacked up" these great anime works.

Back in the day ROBOTECH was my JAM and I still love it today and I am in my mid 40s. From the epic story, to the talented and memorable voice actors to the amazing visuals and the great music, this show has it all. Some may prefer the Japanese original source materials but for me it is all about ROBOTECH! Thanks for the video! Can't wait for more.

Robotech was my first step into Anime in the 80s. Looking forward to watching all your videos on this topic.

I used to have that Jetfire Autobot as a kid. Alas, I was too rough on my toys back then, and this one was well-deservedly one of my favorites, so it got a lot of play. I wish I had kept it in better condition to this day.

I remember as a kid being confused about the history, lore, and chronology of Robotech back before google and youtube existed. Now I have a better understanding of why it would be confusing since it was multiple shows and information wasn't available back then. Nice video.

Seriously though, f*** HarmonyGold and the evil trolls they've become. They've done nothing significant with the Robotech franchise in over a decade, yet still do all they can to attack anything remotely similar to it and make it impossible to legally get anything in the Macross franchise. I'm not even talking about the original SDF Macross, I'm talking about the numerous sequels and spinoffs it got that have never seen the light of day outside of Japan. There was a new show two years ago, but you'd never know about it because of HarmonyGold.

Robotech was one of the first anime series which had attracted the attention of college students. I considered that the anime was part of the first wave. The first wave had started after Astroboy came to the United States. Astroboy was seen as a children's series, even it was design for all ages. I had remember other anime series during the 1960's. Astroboy and Speed Racer had caught more attention. I still remember details from some episodes. By the time when Robotech had came to the United States, anime was firmly established in Japan. Anime is not solely for children.

Very informative. Remembered watching the Robotech cartoons in 85 and had the toys. Watch a little here and there on the other 2 series especially the motorcycle one. Maybe one day can just sit down and watch them all.

Robotech was my first Anime and I'm really glad the combined the three into one because it made a great story into an epic story. Its multiple generations fighting to protect the earth instead of just one conflict.

There's such a crazy story behind this stuff! As a kid, literally all I knew about Macross/Robotech/etc was a random article I saw in Newtype Magazine or something about Carl Macek, but I've watched a few episodes since the whole thing was added to Amazon Prime Video and I totally get why this appealed to so many people. It has all the flash of Gundam, but with more grounded mech designs and a decidedly more space opera vibe from the beginning.

Into Robotech since 1985. Wasn't too sure about this new cartoon that came on in this style that was different than anything I had seen before, but then I saw Jetfire was in it (and I had the toy). There was a transformer in a different cartoon? I got to watch this! And once Robotech gets you, it never lets go.

I love this channel!!!

The merging of three separate series was pretty amazing.

For a long time, I really believed that Southern Cross was the sequel of Macross and Sera was Max and Millia’s daughter…

I know I am late to the party but I have to disagree on one point. We did notice the continuity change going from macross to southern cross. My sister (13) and I (15) were confused at the first episode of southern cross and what got us through those first episodes was hoping to get more information on the characters from macross. We would watch hoping to see a cameo somewhere and were disappointed and continued watching out of habit.The story of southern cross did start to grow on us though and we were enthralled by the love story between musica and bowie . When southern cross ending and the invid invasion came,we were blown away,think about it,we had never seen the complete and utter defeat of a protagonist in a cartoon/anime at that time. We weren't just watching a 30 min commercial for toys like other shows at the time,there was a story with a big impact on us

I watched Robotech on TV in 1985 with my dad. The power went out and we missed an episode and I had to wait years before I could get a VHS box set of the series and finally watch it.

As of today, Big West & Harmony Gold have reached an agreement for worldwide Macross releases.

Sadly they’re still going to keep harassing Catalyst Game Labs over the redesigns for the unseen. I wish this series would just die already so people won’t be afraid to license something from Battletech out of fear fucking Harmony Gold will sue them.

Are you kitten me? Robotech was COLOSSAL here in Argentina and created legions of fans. We had a lot of merchandise coming here too, and it's intro theme will forever be in the grand hall of the greatest theme songs of all time. Whenever it plays, WE STAND UP.

I had the coolest experience with Robotech because i encountered the novelisations before i knew what anime was. They were pretty good books for a 5th grader and I gobbled them up. Only finding out about the tv shows and movies and All Of Japanimation from that first introduction. The base story of the tiny city being warped to Pluto and having to survive inside this space hulk they barely understood and fight their way home to Earth was exactly the space opera i was looking for at the time as a little kid seeing ST the next generation. Robotech was special.

I had one random episode recorded on VHS tape by a friend in elementary school.. i watched that one episode for years and years thinking this must be the greatest cartoon ever. Years later in college, i was able to watch the whole Robotech series on dvd.. i was disappointed because the entire series didnt get any better. That one robotech episode was the epoch imo but made me a fan forever.

I was in on the ground floor with Robotech...I have all the cartoons on DVD, did the RPG when it was at Palladium, had a few of the toys, and even knew about the Revel models (my brother had one), some of which were never in any version of the shows...anyway, it's one of the most important things of my own childhood, so I'll be interested to watch more of your series on this!

Loved watching Robotech after school on channel 66 ( UHF ) down here in Chi town. Had some cool toys from the multitude of real and bootleg lines. Ahhhh, how I miss that Flea market I used to go to down the road from childhood home. Great stuff, as always, Dan!

Toy Galaxy funny you should ask. 😏 I recently found out it was closed for many years while I lived out of state (91-03) but reopened on Sunday only twice a month about 2 years ago. Gonna see what it has to offer this spring!

Tracking down the VHS episodes of Robotech was an obsession of mine as a child, they weren't easy to find in my neck of the woods.

This is really good. I’m the owner of the VF1S NSX and there’s so many people who have zero understanding of what all it took to make Robotech work. Hate Harmony Gold but it’s clear at least initially their hands were tied.

I barely saw Robotech when I was a kid in the 80s, it came on after I went to school. But in 2nd Grade I watched Starblazers, and that blew my mind. Robotech wasn't on TV near me until high school, but I was able to tape that and show it to others, while Starblazers faded in my memory until the Anime craze started growing when I was in college.

My favorite personal achievement is that I wrote a Robotech comic for Antarctic Press back in the '90s, my only comic book work to date. I never tire of telling people that. 😁

Robotech was one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons, and I couldn't wait to get up early to catch it. At the time, I had no idea it was anime retooled for US audiences. I just liked the animation style and slightly more mature subject matter.

Ah the memories I loved anime back in the 80's still love it today. I remember when Robotech aired in 1985 when I was a kid Saturday Mornings were awesome I miss my childhood 😑

I watched Robotech as a kid, and thanks to Netflix my son is now hooked on it too!

I was very surprised and pleased to see it on Netflix. Now if only Netflix could figure out the red tape to get Macross on there as well.

How do you guys do it......is it weeks months or years of planning. Awesome job, this intense t.v. series its history and dynamics and you guys did an amazing job summarising the first part very eloquently. Its huge fanbase I'm sure will be support of. Will be attentively waiting for part 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Harmony Gold is solely responsible for more robot style anime NOT coming to the US. Yes, a bunch of real estate schmucks in LA that sue anything barely similar to their borrowed mecha designs cut off robot anime for 2 generations.

Probably my #1 favorite TV show from childhood - one of the best gifts I ever got was Macross Perfect Memory book. I remember all of these things mentioned here - Karl Macek although imperfect or downright deplorable in some regards, played a huge role in making anime mainstream in USA.

I have heard of those franchises in different points of time and never figured out that many Unseen from Battletech were from Macross until very recently.

@@kharnthebetrayer1575 yes back in the day, but the new owners of the battletech video game said actually took harmony gold to task and it turns out that Harmony gold never actually had the proper north American rights in the first place.. Harmony gold had to renegotiate their licensing deal in order to keep it. thats why your seeing The original 3 anime on streaming now a days. Looks like harmony gold was using their attorneys to bluff the whole time. American business at it's worse as soon as the had to go to to toe with another Corps expert legal counsel they had nothing to stand on they were trying to get the newest battletech games reworked mechs nixed but the new owners of batlle tech said show us the original licensing agreement apparently it was one of those 1980's napkin deals.
