I remember when it came out in the arcade & it was all any of my friends were talking about. That gun made the game. No matter how good the graphics were on the home systems it just wasn't the same as having that gun in your hand blasting away.

story time: after getting an nes, i was blown away, and i was promised to get some new games on christmas , so the months passed and xmas came and i got 2 new games...this and back to the earth....for a kid who was like 10 years old, who only had mario and duck hunt, these 2 games, that were only light guns games, were like a kick to the shin, i hated them both , i was dreaming of mario 2 and zelda and all i got was crappy light gun games....the family noticed i was upset, so the promised me to get better games on my birthday, a couple of months passed and i got 3 new games....MARIO 2, WRATH OF THE BLACK MANTA and SNAKE'S REVENGE...now , say what u like about the games, but a new mario game, a ninja game and a metal gear game ? that was the happiest day of my life...

Black Manta I got a few years ago. Was hard, but finally beat it. Was kind of weird with having to rescue kids trapped in walls and ice and the final boss is tough, having to use all your special abilities to defeat him. Snake's Revenge I believe was a part of Metal Gear. I'll have to try that one again. The 3 Mario games I did recently too, only finishing the original in my youth.

Nice to see someone looking at Operation Wolf: it was a fantastic game at the time, but a little supplementary info: Nishikado was credited on Chase HQ II, etc but he was in a management role by then, so likely little to no creative input. This goes for Darius II/Sagaia on the Megadrive (your video shows the arcade ver), Parasol Stars (PCE) and Bust a Move (PS ports) too. On to Op Wolf: I'm interested in your source for his involvement; he was defintely still at Taito at the time, but I have a feeling he'd already shifted into management, and may have been overseeing console development (that might have been a few years later). I have a feeling he had little to do with its design, but the game has no staff list, so researching it is not easy :D

Unless there are 2 different types of machines, i think you are mistaken about calling this a light gun game. The joystick to control the on-screen crosshairs is built into the base where the gun is attached to the machine. I found this out when my brother attempted to mess up my game by putting his hand in front of the gun to prevent it from reading the screen, to no effect.

I loved this game when it was released in the arcade. Prior to this I mostly remember games with gun controllers that were on huge projected screens while you stood at least 6 feet back to play. I never got into the 8bit/16bit versions because it didn't come close to the arcade experience with the Uzi controller. Same as Operation Thunderbolt. I don't recall seeing OW3 in the wild where I was now that I think of it and Operation Tiger I didn't even hear of previously, though that's not a surprise, as by that point I'd left my days as an arcade rat behind long before. I loved the one I went to most often. It was small, it was dingy, it always had a fog of cigarette smoke and it's entrance was up a dark alley. That place was fun as hell as they always seemed to have something new coming in every month or so. It wasn't set up for kids, but that made it even better as there was never a time where it was absolutely packed, but the business was steady. The owner was a real character as well. Great times. I haven't thought about that place in years. Thanks for the video mate :)

Operation Wolf is in my top 5 as to what arcade machine I will be adding to the work lunchroom. I am sure it is 1 of the more expensive to purchase but for a 10-15 minute run I can think of few games that are better to pass the time. I only wish I had been better at the game as a 12-14 year old as O.Wolf did eat up the quarters. Thanks for the Vid. I have been appreciating the images from of the Sega Master System lately. It was not financially viable to have NES and Master S. as a kid since my parents granted me the Commodore64. I have subbed. Keep up the good work. I would have thought the same but when you find them for sale they are often pretty cheap. Mine was 250 although it had some issues. Of course you can find overpriced ones also. The biggest thing is that it's hard to find a fully working one. But boy is it worth it. Nothing like mowing the enemy down as the recoil is going crazy.

I remember having trouble with this one in the arcade, but finally being able to beat the sequel Operation Thunderbolt on about my second or third try. I was finally able to save the pilot yay. Picking up the laser sight power up really helped. I later beat it again on a co op playthrough with a friend as well. I think I usually either died or ran out of ammo playing Wolf though haha. I just realized the light gun game Target: Terror did the same thing at the end where they didn't let you continue once you reached the end. Except it was the last checkpoint of the final stage, so the game let you put in one last credit to replenish your health before continuing if you wanted to, which I usually did. At least, that's what Target: Terror did.

Thank you for posting this and your many other awesome videos. Opwolf is one of my all time favorites. I sucked at the game when I was a kid so didn't get to enjoy it as much as I do now in my basement. Gun is definitely one of the best made for recoil and sound. I also have T2 and while Iove that game too the gun experience isn't nearly as good. Of course T2 isn't supposed to feel like an Uzi. 😀

Operation Wolf was very much influenced by Rambo: First Blood Part II, right down to the opening montage, which was also similar to Commando, as well as the game beginning with you parachuting into a jungle, you going on a rescue mission to save some POWs in a jungle, and a climactic helicopter chase as you escape from enemy territory. Operation Thunderbolt, in the meantime, was more like The Delta Force since it had you rescuing hostages kidnapped by terrorists after their flight was hijacked.

anytime :). I’m a fan of your channel - brings back a lot of memories. My father owned one of the largest arcade companies in Canada. I grew up fixing and of course testing (playing) them. Operation wolf was an interesting one because of the potentiometer setup. You’d have to setup the range in settings. And a bad potentiometer would bounce the target around. A few of my favorite games were mikie, exciting hour, Galaga, time pilot, Popeye, Arabian, jungle hunt, and rope man.

The problem with the nintendo version was that the light gun couldn't be played in automode. You had to individually pull the trigger every time. There was NO way you could even pass the first level. Imagine pulling the trigger 300 times? Nintendo really needed to release an auto version of their lightgun. Then it would've been awesome.
