My Godness! Sir Hank Green aren't you having information overload? I mean, you teach chemistry, ecology, psychology, ecology & biology, based on your videos. I know that these are literally related to one another but you're just SO amazing! Such a God-given intelligence shouldn't be squandered. You and your team made an excellent choice for setting up your youtube channel. It has helped me a lot, thank you!

If you didn't come here to learn about the history of life on Earth, and instead came to yell at people for believing evolution, or creationism, then please leave. you are distracting others who want to learn.

would be so cool if they made an entire series focused in detail on the individual eras of earth's history from formation to today. I am really fascinated by how much and how often the geology and climate has changed since the planet's formation. There happened so much stuff in those millions of years, most documentaries or short episodes don't manage to cover up even a fraction of it.

So many cool ecological stories to tell! I can't wait, and hope to see some of these: 1. Metapopulations + Island Biogeography (+ dwarf elephants) 2. Fig wasps, Ant Acacias, and other fun mutualistic relationships 3. The likelihood of extinction for any given species + the Red Queen Hypothesis 4. Evolution of sex - clones vs. breeders Please and thank you!

I showed this channel to my science teacher, and she showed this to my class today, but I couldn't understand half of it because my class wouldn't shut up. A kid at my table kept talking about how you looked like Justin Bieber(?) and how it was "boring as hell", but I find this rather interesting. I don't think they even give this kind of knowledge a chance. This channel is horribly underrated, and it deserves way more views than it gets. You guys are very entertaining, keep up the great work.

Good point. That's why it is so important to be humble. People who say that they alone hold the ultimate truths of the universe are indeed arrogant [whether "scientists" OR "fundamentalists"]. We all believe what we believe because it is seems like the best explanation to us based on our life experiences. The key is to approach people with an open mind and try and gain new insights together, no?

Hank, I'm really looking forward to this new series. One comment: another change that happened when prokaryotes turned into eukaryotes is that the membrane of an ancient prokaryotic cell folded inwards, surrounding the genetic material and forming the first nuclear membrane. The presence of a nuclear membrane is a fundamental difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Thumbs up so he can see?

But he provided both in one sentence. Americans don't say 'OTEL', they say 'HOTEL'. Why is 'HERB' so different? P.S. It's pronounced 'aitch', not 'haitch'.

Well considering how our language evolved from many different languages like French and Italian, words aren't always pronounced the way they look. If that were case we wouldn't learn spelling in school. As to your comment "if it were pronounced 'nitch' it wouldn't have an 'e' on the end," how many times face you seen an e on the end of a word and wondered why it was there? Probably a few times.

The History of Life on Earth - Crash Course Ecology #1 NOTES 1: Course Intro 1.1: Biology knowledge is assumed 1.2: Everything connects back to ecology 1.3: The history of life here eventually leads to humans, the most important species on Earth 2: Before Life on Earth 2.1: Humans are currently the dominant species on the planet, with different dominant species over time 2.2: Most of Earth’s history from its creation 4.6 billion years ago was devoid of life due to excessive heat, much of which remains in Earth’s core 2.2.1: Earth’s core continues to influence geology, albeit slowly 2.3: Water eventually cooled enough to turn into liquid 3: Start of Life on Earth 3.1: A “soup of chemicals” such as nitrogen, methane, and hydrogen formed in the oceans and atmosphere 3.1.1: Life started as these chemicals formed organic molecules, most likely just a collection of chemicals surrounding a membrane, called Protobionts 3.2: These chemicals turned into amino acids and, eventually, RNA 3.3: Protobionts continued to split until DNA nucleotides formed, leading to single-celled organisms 4: Single-Celled Organisms 4.1: The first single-celled organisms were prokaryotes during the Archaean Eon, from around 3.5-2.1 billion years ago 4.2: A type of prokaryote called cyanobacteria began to make its own food through photosynthesis, releasing oxygen into the atmosphere and opening the way for oxygen-breathing organisms 4.3: Eukaryotes evolved by endosymbiosis, where a symbiotic relationship between two prokaryotes led to the development of organelles such as mitochondria and plastids, allowing for much more complexity 5: Multicellular Organisms 5.1: The first multicellular organisms formed around 1.5 billion years ago, first as algae 5.2: The Cambrian Explosion 535 million years ago led to an evolutionary arms race as species known as Chordates developed skeletons, shells, claws, etc., resulting in the dawn of the Phanerozoic era 5.3: Around 500 million years ago, species left the oceans and colonized land in the Ordovician Period 6: The First Land-Based Species 6.1: 365 million years ago, tetrapods (essentially fish with legs at the time) and arthropods (spiders and insects) appeared in the Devonian period 6.2: Land-Based organisms changed ecosystems as they expelled carbon dioxide after inhaling oxygen, leading to the Carboniferous period around 359-299 million years ago where dense forests sprouted up 6.3: There was too much oxygen, leading to global cooling and the destruction and eventual fossilization of these forests, which are used in today’s fossil fuels 7: Pangea and the Dinosaurs 7.1: Around 299-251 million years ago, Pangea formed as one large continent during the Permian period, altering ocean currents and the climate 7.2: Modern ferns and pines, as well as archosaurs, showed up as a result of these geological changes 7.3: The Permian-Triassic Extinction Event resulted in the vast majority of species going extinct 7.3.1: Dinosaurs evolved during the Triassic as there was little competition for their niche from other species 7.4: During the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods from 199-65 million years ago, more complex dinosaurs evolved as herbivores, carnivores, and massive sea-going species, as well as small mammals, roamed the Earth 7.5: Around 65 million years ago, a major extinction event occurred where most dinosaurs, with the exception of birds, went extinct 7.5.1: The event was likely caused by an asteroid, but may have been caused by climate change 7.5.2: Another theory is that dinosaurs often refused to eat angiosperms, a type of plant that evolved around 100 million years ago, which became more common 8: Modern Life 8.1: Mammals and birds dominated the world after the extinction event 8.2: Despite continued climate fluctuations and extinction events, species continued to evolve into what we know today, including humans 8.3: Ecology provides us with the best guesses of what will happen

brandonp4 You are somewhat correct. The primordial soup theory isn't a law, but scientists have been really close. Look up the Miller-Urey experiment. The problem is, humans weren't alive during that time, so there are a lot of missing pieces. If all the factors were there recreating life would be a simple task, but its not. Then again, I have yet to meet a scientist who would arrogantly claim they had all the information available. That is against the spirit of science. The point is you know you don't have the whole picture, and know you never will, but still try to find the complete set. As for the human question, the first anatomically modern human is probably younger than 200k years old. Where do you get millions of years? As for technology you are right. There is no definitive reason why technology progressed more in the past 100 years than in the past 10k. It's actually a branch of history to discover why.

Sads626 In the 1940s Witnesses claim to have seen a UFO crash in Roswell New Mexico... I'm not one who believes in UFOs and such but it is very interesting if you do the research on it.... it is claimed that in this UFO there were objects with advanced technology one being a microchip... possibly coincidence that our technology just seem to Boom over the last 70 or so yrs....

"I don't know how it happened... I wish we did but we don't". Hank, here is a verse for ya: Romans 1:20- "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse". God puts the answer out there in plain sight for us. You just have to receive it.

I think people that bring talk of evolution into channels that are aimed at those that believe in creationism or intelligent design are obnoxious pricks. Conversely, I believe that those who believe in creationism or intelligent design are pricks when they bring talk of religion into videos aimed at those that believe in science. Please keep things peaceful and please don't push your thoughts on the unwilling.

Jorge Padua Not so at all, The Bible does not explicitly say how old the earth is. Creation was written in a 6 day format, but there is nothing to say that it was actually 6, 24 hours days. We do not know how long God's days were. One of his days could represent millions of years. I am a strong Christian and I believe that the earth is just as old as you think.

TylersReelFishing I understand completely that you mean well. And while I'm not religious, I think it's perfectly acceptable to be religious and still believe in science and even evolution specifically. My biology teacher is religious, and her reasoning was always, "Why does science have to disprove religion? It can just as easily be the answer to religion." I like the passion in your comment, and most certainly the lack of "Religion is best!" that I normally hear, but this is where I must disagree... If scientists were to simply tell themselves "God made it this way" every time they hit a road block, not much would be discovered (or, at least, not at such a quick pace). They may not know the answer now, but with enough study an dedication, maybe in 100, a thousand, or even 100,000 years from now we'll know the answer. To me, science and religion can come together in an answer if a person decided to make that connection, but she never be mixed while trying to find said answer. Hope you have a good day!

Just love how we sidestepped how unfathomably unlikely it would be for the first life form (3:45 to 4:15) to naturally generate: its somewhere around 1:the amount of electrons in the observable universe, I freaking love scishow but even panspermia seems more likely than spontaneous generation.

I know a lot of paleontologists that would not like your use of the word "explosion"! The huge increase in diversity occurred over 20-25 million years. A lot of organisms we're finding new niches, and evolving to fill those niches. The preferred nomenclature would be the Cambrian Radiation!
