The History of German Blue Rams! + How to Care for This Nano Cichlid. Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

*pictured in the thumbnail, is a hybrid blue veil german/electric bolivian ram from captivity...found in the Czech Republic and Hungary most commonly.
* Also, as a viewer pointed out- the ram i zoomed in on while showing the black spot, when I was discussing male features- was not a male and rather a female due to the blue irredescent scales in the margins of the dot. However, my words and description of features are correct if you want to identify a male or female. This was a trickier young female and male trio and the male must have swam back into the plants. Apologies folks!

I got several Rams (blue) from a local store and all but one died. He is a real specimen and I am fascinated now. So I am hoping to get some more and even attempt to breed them. They are so curious and even come up to my finger to feed. They appear to be very smart also. But the colors are what attracts me. Hopefully I can be successful. I have bred Kribs a long time ago and also angels but never Rams. I have all South American fish and they all fascinate me. I kept fish in high school over fifty years ago and so much has changed in the technology. Much easier now to keep a clean tank.

Tons of cichlids from africa love hard water. Also many central american species do as well. As for not having RO...i know it is a bit pricey...but I've purchased 1 gallon jugs of distilled water for 1 dollar each for top offs, and then bought a 5 or 10 gallon size jug to start the tank....keep em in a 10 -20 gallon and youd be good to go for 20 bucks or less and maybe 1 or 2 dollars a month?

  • @Fishtory

Very true...tank bred can easily take 7.0...some even up near 7.5, however the start to only survive and not flourish if you go higher (in my experience , which was 14 years ago, previous to these guys)

Yeah, if you toss some leaves in there and do frequent water changes, it may work (or use brightwell substrate that keeps water around 6.0 if you start at 7...and oddly if you start at 8ph it seems to only bring it down to 7.4 or 7.5 , but leaves or tannins can drop another point off -if you really want them. Good luck

Sure thing, I'll try and give a little advice here. So first off Blue ram fish are a bit sensitive compared to most small cichlids, they like warm and clean water. Weekly water changes are a good thing, but more importantly nitrates must be under 30 or 40 ppm for them to thrive. Also, while I've seen them work out in a 10gallon tank, it must be very well planted, with at least 2 caves and hides per fish, and a few tiny "dither" fish like chili rasboras or ember tetras. Those small fish will make the rams feel more relaxed, as small fish around means that big predatory fish aren't around. For most hobbyists 10 gallons is a little small since it's easy to have the ph swing and the nitrates get high quickly. Also any dead fish or excess fish food can even cause ammonia spikes, and rams are super delicate to that sort of issue. All that said you want a fairly neutral ph of 6 to 7.4 and a stable temperature of 82 degrees with 76-86 being their range naturally and 82 to 83 being the temp they usually spawn at. Also while you can keep a ram alone, but they do much better in pairs. Feeding them live food will really help make them colorful and healthy. I hope this helps a bit. Good luck and best wishes Andre!

I would suggest it. While the intensity of the behavior may reduce over time, it isn't worth risking the health and happiness of your fish, in my opinion. Spread out the bullying a bit.

Alex my friend, I have to tell you the ram that you think is a male is not, it is definitely a female. The second dorsal ray is not really elongated as it should be for a male, the face and forehead are too elongated and pointy to be a male, and the pectoral fins are not long enough to go all the way back almost to the tail,... and the big one there are jewels as you put it on the black spot, there are never I repeat never Jewels covering the black spot on the male. I am telling you my brother it’s not a male. You may actually have two color variations that one female was too washed out and either a juvenile or another color variation. If you ordered and asked for males and females equally you may have been screwed there,..they may have given you whatever the hell they wanted to give you, in any case the one you think is a male is not a male. You may take what I say with a grain of salt, but, I’m telling you man it’s not a male. I’ve been keeping fish since the late 50s early 60s I had German Blue rams over the years, don’t have any right now, but, if that one you say is a male i’ll eat my shorts. Nice history lesson, love that aquarium of yours. I say these things to help you from experience over the years and decades my friend, just trying to help you out.🐟👍 PS. The one you think is a male, it’s really a very well colored female, I would keep her. I wouldn’t get rid of any of them I don’t know how many you have in that aquarium, but, if you want to breed them I would try and find some real males from a reputable fish store or a private breeder. Ordering over the Internet a lot of times is a hit and miss thing and because you can’t pick them out and see the fish they will give you whatever. Such are the hazards of ordering over the Internet.✌️ Peace

Thank you for the correction, it could be...as i have one male and 2 females- i may have lost track of filming one and looking at another- but I trust your word- i have not kept these in over 14 years now...so im probably incorrect. As for the washed out one...i was told by a friend that they are only about 6 months according to the suppliers shop (apparently they catch them in the flooded puddles in Venezuela and they only last 6 months until the next flood or drying out, since they catch them when they are most concentrated. Does this sound correct to you also?- so i was told by an experienced keeper).

@@Fishtory out of all the black rams are the hardest to breed and keep😂 they're soooooo! aggressive, and not to mention the females some times can not tell how's how. That's only with the dark knights 🤪
