it sounds like she took two tin cans and tied them together with grass and attached some disgruntled wire to it to make a mic

Some of the things you don't see in bowling alleys anymore except in ninepin alleys is above ground ball returns and human pinsetters. Back before the automated pinsetters there was no mechanical problems that you might see in today's bowling establishment.

There might be a number of facts here; there may not. Personally I find it disjointed and confusing and much is contradictory to the information I have gleaned over the last 45+ years. Contact James Masters (Games) who really does know his stuff.
