The History and Meaning of The Sharing Merit Ritual (Pattidāna)
Sharing Merit | Pāḷi- pattidāna | Myanmar- ahmyar wai (အမျှဝေ) | Sri Lanka- pin deema (පිං දීම).
Ashin Sarana explains all details related to sharing merit with deceased relatives (departed spirits), the history of this ritual, Sri Lanka and Myanmar version of the ritual, and its benefits.
The Pāḷi book Milindapañhapāḷi mentions that it is possible to share merit only with one of the four kinds of ghosts and not with anybody else. It specifically mentions that it is not possible to share merits with gods (deities) - "saggagatā nappaṭilabhanti." (Milindapañha 5.4. Pubbapetādisapañha, MM Mil. 283)
However, the Buddha is reported to say the opposite - according to the Buddha, not only that gods can receive shared merit, but he explicitly recommends to laypeople to share their merits with gods. Maybe the Milindapañha statement refers to obtaining the results immediately (food and clothes immediately appear for the ghosts at the moment when the merit is shared with them), whereas sharing merits with gods (deities) provides the gods only with "merit," which also requires that the gods rejoice in that merit, say sādhu, without any miraculous, immediate results. (See DN 3.3. Mahāparinibbāna Sutta - Pāṭaliputtanagaramāpanaṃ, MM 2.75 par.153, and also Udāna 8.6. Pāṭaligāmiyasuttaṃ, MM Udāna 170 for exact citation.)

May all beings be happy and healthy.

Thank you for these explanations. It does help me a lot. I do not speak Burmese, nor understand Pali but I am Buddhist and am going regularly to Myanmar with my family to spend time in Taung Bila monastery, in Sagai mountains.
Sadu Sadu sadu 🙏🙏🙏 as I’m a Buddhist, I know this history in Myanmar but don’t have idea how to express it in English to my foreigner friends. Now I got it and many thanks for this Sayardaw🙏🙏🙏
It is difficult for me to pay respect to certain monks. Therefore, when I have to pay respect to such monk, I pay respect to the robe not the monk. The robe represent the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha.

Beautiful. I had assumed that the pouring water was a symbolic gesture of ' handing over something of mine , with my consent, to you ' ... Hense at a marriage ceremony, the father hands over his daughter, lovingly nurtured as mine upto now, to the son in law, to be loved and cared for as we parents did ( and I give my consent to your divine partnership) ... similarly , the highest merit I have gained by Dana to the Sangha, is being passed on to the beings awaiting my donation... like this water flowing from a higher place to the lower place is filling and overflowing the cup, may my merit transfered to you assist you in being plentiful...
Thank you. This is very informative. Sadhu, Sadhu, Sadhu.

When I give money to monks, I prefer to give "nawakama" (use as you wish), rather then robes and material supplies, for the monks to use as it suits them. I certainly do not know what are their needs. Many Sayadaws, looking after monasteries are struggling to insure the running costs of their monasteries and the minimum basic subsistence needs of their monks and novices. Also, most monks (99.999%) to whom I give have higher silas, better volition and understanding of Buddha's teaching then me. As a extra benefit to nawakama, when such monks use my donation, their donations increase the value of my initial donation because of their purer volition.
Nice explanation
The volition is very important, if not the most important, when doing donation. Helping without expecting something in return. Donation should not be to inflate your ego.
Very nice venerable master
Thank u Swamin Wahansa for that beautiful explanation. I came across your sermon whilst searching for the right terminology to explain to my son the value of donations and the meaning of transferring merits. What a wonderful explanation 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼. May u realise the four Nobel truths comfortably and end the cycle of rebith this life. Theruwan Saranai.
Good teaching sayardaw 🙏
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🌷🌷🌷 Like Venerable said, the life span of the planet is 10^20 = 100 Quintillion’s years. This number came from the Enlighten One himself. Buddhism is the religion of Nature and Science

Thank you so much.
As for the pouring of the water, when I asked my teacher about this ritual, he replied: "What is the quality of the element water?" My reply was:" Of the four elements, water is the one that bond thing together." So I'm guessing that the pouring of water is to bond your donation with you and who you are sharing it with.
