Nearby mines are the source of materials used to sprout our beloved cities. It's a shame these places and the people who worked them tend to be forgotten. I'm glad some are being preserved and their record kept alive.
@Elise Freshwater-Blizzard What a brilliant video! I enjoyed it profusely. Donald seems like a wonderful gentleman. The drone footage was EPIC, especially the shot of you waving. Again, thank you for taking us to these amazing places that might otherwise go unseen.
I was told a anecdote while on a mine tour in New Mexico: The mines were loud, and the miner's lamps were dim, when drilling rock they would use two to three person teams, one person would hold the drill, very similar to a cold chisel, and the other one(s) would swing sledges, I think their job title was "striker". After every hit the holder would twist the drill a bit, then striker would hit it again. Due to use, the struck end of the drill was very shiny, and in the low light and noise, the holder would have to cover the end of the drill with their thumb if they wanted the striker to stop; so you could judge a striker's attentiveness based on if their partner still had both thumbs. I'm not sure if it was a true anecdote, or just a tale, but it sounds believable, and I know that I would not want to be either party in that endeavor.
Elise: interviews worker with slight accent Tom scott: oh ho! So you are approaching me?
The longer hair really suits her.
I look forward to watching this when I get home! 😊
Fantastic - Donald was a great interviewee - love the drone footage :)
Great video Elise ,find your video well presented and fun keep up the good work
Another excellent video!
Spectacular, I think you blew it out of the park, especially with the interspersing of drone shots and other footage of the trip, kept me deeply engaged! The only thing I would say is that looked chilly on that hill without a coat, hope you warmed up with a nice cup of coffee!
mine time
Oh it's a Casio. Good watch to beat on.
Another interesting look at something local! Oy... this is just filling up a list of things to do for me if I can get to the UK for a trip one day. :)
I didn't know there was this much to learn about a slate mine. Really excellent questions you asked, to paint the picture. Donald seems like an excellent tour guide. He's conversational enough to make it a very human style of information, while taking the topic seriously enough to give depth of information and tie into the human history of the area (and briefly to the geological history of the rock itself!) Neat, it's like I've just been on a tiny tour of the UK. I miss traveling there, as an American. Best to you, and thanks for the video!
the format really reminds me of tom scott's, which is not a bad thing.
Wonderful video, yet again. Loved the handshake at the end.
Great vid
