The Hiding Place of the Beloved - St. John of the Cross /w Fr. Donald Haggerty - Discerning Hearts
In this introductory episode, Fr. Donald Haggerty and Kris McGregor discuss the depths of prayer as explored by St. John of the Cross, the Mystical Doctor of the Church. Fr. Haggerty helps the listener understand the nature of mystical contemplation and more specifically “What or who is a mystic?” He also helps us understand the dwelling of God in our souls and how can we enter into contemplative prayer.

I have finally found Catholic contemplative praying m very similar to non dual teaching. There are many saints in non dual teachings although non catholic by all means believing in Jesus Christ being gods. I feel they brought me back to Catholic mysticism.

One day as I was seeking this union with the Lord after experiencing a great trial , I entered a Catholic bookstore looking for some comfort some loving thing to read . All of a sudden a book fell off the shelves all by itself, onto the floor, it was called " JOHN OF THE CROSS " . I did'nt want even to pick it up because it had the word CROSS and I certainly did not want more suffering . But i did pick it up and cracked it open , there I saw the beautiful words of the Flame of love and I was smitten ! John is the highest when it comes to what is written about love and union . I read it all and drank it in . But there is still higher than John , I was not satisfied until one day God introduced me to the work of Luisa Picaretta " Book of heaven . The Call to the Creature to return to the Order, to the Place, to the purpose for which It was created by God . " There my soul soared and was happy ! How wonderful is our Catholic Church . God's will be done on earth as in Heaven .

My one and only desire was to know Luke 17:21 and Psalm 46:10 and this was my unwaveringly Faith consistently on a daily basis starting back in the late eighties. It was through purgation, pain, emptiness and loss of self that St. John of the cross, Theresa of Avila, the Cloud of unknowing and Meister Eckhart unknowingly appeared as Savior in my life. The gain I have received is far greater than the pain. ❤

Makes me think of the tears, absense, and sense of longing of St. Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb...but He was right there all the while.

I wrestle with mysticism, since it seems it is so easy (and has been so easy over the centuries) to drift right into Neoplatonistic - or outright Gnostic - nebulous mysticism. How to find that fine line of life, and keep from veering off into self-absorption disguised as spirituality? Seems such a minefield....

Gnosticism is actually the opposite because Gnosticism is very dualistic and in mysticism is union, Oneness.

@@allenmorgan4309 I suppose my thought (at the time) were this: Neoplatonism stresses the superiority of the spiritual and the inferiority of the physical, whereas Gnostics don’t just consider the physical realm/body to be inferior, but to be outright evil. It seems to me that strong mysticism also values the spiritual far above the physical, and occasionally seems to cross that Gnostic line, proclaiming the physical to be evil (sinful, worthless, a prison etc)….
