I have to disagree with you on Courtney. I do like her images very much and especially how she made a great image out of something very mundane. Most importantly, we have to create images we like for ourselves rather than aiming to please the masses. I do agree that her enthusiasm is wonderful, and great example to all fellow photographers who focus on camera gear only. Enjoy your hobby!

I have been doing photography for 50 years. I eat,shit and breath photography. I try and learn something new everyday about this craft. Books,videos,lectures etc. If it wasn’t fun and challenging I wouldn’t still be involved for this long. I also have other crafts that keep me busy. But there is something about stopping time that draws me in,100%!!! Keep up the information!

So cool that you mentioned Courtney. I love her videos that are very originals. 😃 I share your thoughts about A. I.

Courtney Victoria's channel gives me a lot of joy, and Henry Turner's enthusiasm is infectious. I also really enjoy Bryan Birks channel for his thoughtful reflections on image making , and his pursuit of attaining not merely technical perfection, but the soul and humanity of the subjects within that image.

I already was subscribed to Courtney Victoria* and I love Imitative photography** and Raw society*** * I'm kinda mad that she was in Antarctica recently and to get there she should have gone through an airport located in my city (my city is kinda the hub from where all international planes go through before going to some other airport in the country) and I'd have loveeed to go with some billboards and give her some local appreciation! ** I adored the video he did on Alexei Titarenko so much that I always look forward for opportunities where I can apply it to my photography *** From them I immensely recommend a complete "course" on street and travel photography done in Morocco that feels more like a documentary on how to do street photography. It's genuinely an incredible experience to watch it!

Simon D'entremont is another youtuber worth checking out. He is more technically inclined, but very engaging, knowledgeable, and most importantly passionate about photography and teaching

Thanks Alex. I love the Courtney Victoria channel! She puts the fun back in photography. I remember the mystery of seeing my first print develop in the tray. It was amazing to see. Ansel Adams said the first thing a photographer must do is to want to go out and photograph. The desire must be there. Many of these photographers inspire you to just go out and do it, mistakes and all. BTW, I just signed up. ;-)

Alex, you are right on the money with your comments! AI will never impart the passion of capturing a photo that moves people. Your channel is inspiring because you present the why and passion of photography rather than just the nuts and bolts of making an image.

Thank you for another great video. I already follow a couple of the channels you mentioned. Many of the photography channels i follow are more about seeing the world, enjoyment and fun. For me the biggest thing that AI can't replace is the love of being creative and the memories of events and characters.

I’ve been sharing my work online for over 10 years, and I love to connect with other artists and photographers as well. Can AI ever replace passion and sharing and friendship and admiration… if so, we are surely a long way off from it. Thanks for sharing this work and your thoughts. ❤

I love photography because i love art but im not an artist. But i can use photography as a way to indicate my taste in art and my influences. I find that very satisfying

I was having this same discussion with a fellow artist/photographer the other night...I have spent my entire (the job that pays the bills) 35 yr career working in Technology as Systems Administrator. Photography has been my "right-brain" release. I've watched this process from the inside being the person who keeps the "machines running" and tuned :-) .... it's still maturing..."Machine Learning" aka A.I . as well as "computational photography's" growth. That is not a camera in your smartphone..it's a lens connected to a GPU with some really slick algorithms and polished propriety UI code. My point is A.I. /Machine Learning and Computational software are changing photography and perception of Art in general. It can't "create" on it's own, it needs data sets and models. Because it lacks passion as you stated and it also lacks spontaneity or serendipitous activity....key components (I believe) to creativity which is a building block of Art? Embrace the Chaos -rick

Thank you the links to other channels. I don’t worry about AI. For me, it’s the journey, not the destination. AI can and probably does bake the perfect cookie. That doesn’t stop me from enjoying the process of baking cookies. Same goes for photography.

Excellent video! I have been really struggling recently as my style has developed with it being "wrong" because it doesn't match the elements repeated over and over again in many of the more...mainstream? youtube channels and IG accounts. This variety of youtubers is AMAZING and exactly what I need to be seeing. Thanks for doing what you do!

PASSION.... why else would I spend an afternoon with my Muse in my studio, shooting her beauty and soul, why else would I walk the forest, the beaches, and the streets of my city.... not just to create pretty pictures? But to be out there, with people, or alone if all that matter.... but to feel HUMAN and live my PASSION for photography. Thank you soooo much for what you do, you are an inspiration. Please don't stop, we also share your passion with your videos. AI, will become a tool, just like any other tools that humans have at their disposal, but PASSION cannot be replaced, it is what makes us HUMAN, it drives us to go beyond any barriers... Thank you for pointing out the other photographers. As I said in my comment on one of your recent videos, I think how the photographer feels about the photo/subject makes a difference in the photo. AI will never love you. I appreciate the encouragement to be sharing the knowledge. That's why I did the book on photographing freezing bubbles. It isn't anything somebody couldn't figure out on their own, but I thought some people might appreciate knowing a few things I learned as I figured it out. A few people have bought it, and said it did help them, so that makes me feel like I have helped in a tiny way. I also learned from the whole formatting/copyrighting/ISBN/other nonsense process. (Mostly I learned that it is more work and stress than taking and editing photos and a lot less fun.)

Yes, the passion and experience can’t be replaced!! I do think AI can offer tools for photographers such as the new tools in Lightroom. But many aspects of professional photography are at risk. PS, another great content creator is T. Hopper! Thanks for another great video!

Thank you for promoting photographers that share experience and technique vs changing camera manufacturers every 2-3 years or less promoting the latest and greatest things. Think more people are looking for inspiration vs where to spend their money.

It is quite refreshing to get your take on AI Alex and how it won't replace the passion and desire for people to go out and take photographs. There are a number of video's I've seen that only talk about the potential threat of AI so great to have a more positive take.

Great upbeat video Alex on an important issue!

I love the outdoor life, study and observe the interaction between humans and our living space and try to capture them on camera. This process also helps my mental health and well being. These are values that AI cannot replace, as it is just a tool to create an image.

What do you think it is that A.I won't replace?

The fun creating photos with a camera. It’s not the same sitting in front of a computer creating an image with A.I. or being at location and getting inspired there, maybe talking with other people, whether it's other photographers or people I take pictures of. Getting creative with the situation you find, whether it being subjects or lighting conditions.

Authentic images. I think in the future, there could be a sea of AI generated images, when a real images comes through, it will be a breath of fresh air and it will hold a very different kind of value. In fact, how could AI replace photography when a big part of photography is documenting something real, a real place, a real event etc. when AI images would just be pretty imagery that has no further value attached to it other than looking nice

I've been doing photography for a few decades. I was sharing on line pre social media and wrote a blog about the lessons learned through a camera lens. The why of the photo not the how. When KZread came around I got two reactions - "make your blog a vlog" and "that's not what YT is for". Recently people have been encouraging me to do videos again. It would probably be more like Courtney Victoria but not quite as quirky.

Thank you for this timely post. I watched the RPS online event about photography and AI yesterday evening and I came away feeling AI is void of expressive quality. Art appeared to be under threat with the invention of the camera but out of that sprung the Impressionists movement. Let’s rise to the challenge and show the world from today Photography is NOT dead. Thank you for the tip off to inspiring photography to kick start our creative juices.

Thanks for highlighting these channels. I think AI will be incorporated into “legacy” photography a great deal & in order to be successful & noticed, photogs need to learn how to work with it. And those who ignore AI will be left behind and ignored. That’s how I see it.

Did a bit of assisting with your interview subject Si Melber last Tuesday. great fun, he has a great eye!

Good #video, fair subject. The only problem, I remember how #autofocus cameras, #DSLRs, mirrorless cameras and cell #photography was received. No one took them seriously until later on. Now some photographers swear by them, they can't imagine working without one of those camera types. My point is, some magazines and companies have already accepted #AI as a cheaper way for advertising, even as a new 'art form'. That junk will eventually become the 'norm'.

The serendipitous. I won't forget Simon Baxter relating trekking through the woods looking for compositions and then, in a moment, turned around....and there was "the tree." Or James Brew's relating the plans he had to photograph Comet Neowise, and how it wasn't working or coming together, the size wasn't right, the spacing and focal length, and it was all frustrating...and then pushing on, with nothing going as planned, he took an image...that stopped my heart, helping me transition the grief of losing my wife. I had to purchase that image from him. And my daughter, who has a much better eye that me, capturing two separate day to day images of two separate grandsons that, when challenged to other folk to assess, captures everything you need in the two images, to tell you what you need to know to discern the personality of each kid. AI will never be able to do that

I am very negative about A.I. Smartphones already put photographers plus a few camera manufacturers out of business and A.I. will certainly kill off the rest. On the other hand, A.I. would be perfectly capable of getting the sky exposed nicely along with the ground without requiring any manual bracketing to be done by the user. And you are right. The process is the fun, not necessarily the result. The result is always technically good and compositionally at least OK. Now and again the result is brilliant and, as we all know, the degree of achievable brilliance is usually inversely proportional to the time and effort taken to set things up and take the picture. And trying to repaint half the canvas in post afterwards does not make a bad picture any better. Quite often it's the completely unplanned quirky quicky snapped just after ending the shooting session that actually wins the day. This is also part of the fun of it!

Top video, glad to hear wehave something AI doesn’t. Though I appreciate it as a tool, like for noise reduction.

Courtney is so much fun to watch, usually save her videos for rainy days as they bring me upp when i'm down. She needs more attention :) As much as i like and dislike AI it kind of scares me for reasons beyond photography and art. IF an AI can construct a camera, pick it up and go out to shoot photographs, then i'll put my cameras into storage or use them as paper weights :D

The things Ai can never duplicate is subjectivity and the organic photographic process.

AI should be 'Artificial Idiocy' as it just a very complex computer program that is limited by what boundaries the programmers have built into the code. It doesn't learn in any real sense and is not intelligent even to the degree a dog or cat is intelligent. When you mentioned Courtney Victoria my thoughts turned to Sarah Lyndsey, both are real characters beyond being excellent photographers.

Good discussion. For now 'AI' seems to be mostly reassembling and editing real photos previously taken, hence not very creative as others have noted here. That may evolve in the future. As another recommendation, I get a lot from Steve O'Nions channel here on YT. Cheers!

The main thing that worries me about AI is that when you share this amazing picture that you took with your camera, people rather believe its created by AI, not you. AI generated pictures can be inspiring, can create ideas, but when people start to share them on social media I'm afraid that there will come a point when you just don't know what is a real picture and what is AI generated.

Keep promoting keep talking love your videos. AI will change a lot but will not take the soul and the passion away.

I don't think AI is true artificial intelligence. It is neither self aware, nor does it actually learn. To create an image, it uses stolen images without the photographers permission scraped off the internet as the basis for the image generation and knows if you type in the word cat, it has a number of cat images, compilations, perhaps even 3d representations of a cat. If you look at mid-journey it generates and image and you don't like it, it spawns four more, and you by choosing are telling it which ones you like and which ones you don't. It then calculates what it thinks humans like an generates images that have the same cat attributes, image, lighting, ect to please the general population samples eye. It cannot say what a good cat image is, it generates based on HUMAN response. When I take a picture, or paint a picture, I can say which images are good, bad, average when looking at my own images. AI cannot do that, it does not know what it likes or dislikes because it is not self aware, it only know what is liked by those who take the time to tell it what they like or dislike. Like a chef, it can mimic all the cooking behaviors, put the pan in oven using robotics, precisely measure out ingredient, and present the dish according to images in it''s database, but it can't taste the food and can only pump out millions of dishes and have HUMANS tell it what tastes good and what doesn't. This is the element that cannot be replaced.

@@massa28 No it doesn't. The first thing your baby will learn is to associate you with getting their needs met. So, the feel of your touch, the sound of your voice, and the sight of your face will begin to mean nourishment, warmth, and comfort. Even at this young age, babies are ready to learn about the world around them. In the first year, babies learn to focus their vision, reach out, explore, and learn about the things that are around them. Cognitive, or brain development means the learning process of memory, language, thinking, and reasoning. A computer can do none of these things. It can only learn what it has been programmed to. In AI unsupervised learning, it must receive data, it then looks for patterns. That is because it was programmed by a human to do this. The other two learning methods are, supervised, and reenforced. Again these require human programming and intervention. None of these things happen by themselves. Even if you remove the self aware aspect, it is not learning, it is performing the tasks it was programmed to do.

@@owleye303 No, unless you are refuting random chance evolution in favor for God programming us. If so I would argue that are programming is not like his and computers do not learn when we do a true comparison.

I do agree that for the foreseeable future AI will not replace novel creativity. Nor will it replace the curiosity, emotionally connection or physical inputs of a human. However, I think we are underestimating the potential of AI. It will have a huge impact on the photographic industry particularly in areas of commercial photography where AI I believe will change the landscape.

Photography as a passion/hobby won't ever be replaced, but a huge part of photography as a business will. I think event photographers will be safe because they are in the business of capturing special moments. But things like product photography will just become close to irrelevant. Businesses will be able to input their product and then have AI output realistic photos of the product being used by models in whichever scenario they want...all without ever having to pay for a photo shoot. Businesses will continue hiring photographers to capture important "moments" but for everything else, if they can save money, they'll just figure out what prompt to use for the AI.

I think there are two things with A.I. one aspect will be how programmes such as Photoshop works and improve its ease of use, Connected to this is how the image is taken and how easy it is in camera. The other is images that are created via the computer. But there will be a need to create because of the pleasure of taking an image.

Photographers have nothing to worry about. It is graphics designers that are fear of AI the most. AI can't capture the moment, it only gather the Internet into mash up that is close to description.

I have been following Victoria for a while. She mentions in a podcast with Jason Eldridge that she's autistic. Simon Phillips is another autistic photographer, and I discovered fairly recently that I too am autistic, in my case quite like Doc Martin.

Judging from my Google search, quite a few people ask whether Doc Martin is autistic. According to Martin Clunes, "He might be." From that I conclude the creators did not set out to make an autistic character, probably they cannot do it accurately, but they have chosen a set of autistic traits. A person is not autistic unless they display a combination of autistic traits, a lot of not autistic people display a lot of them too, AND they impair that person's functioning. Certainly, Doc Martin's impaired.

By definition, A.I. is never photography because it does not use light (photons) to produce its pictures but instead it sets bits in the memory of a computer. Will A.I. produce pictures we cannot distinguish from photographs taken by real photographers? - Absolutely!

I think from what I have seen from photographic AI it will have a place in the process. Whether that is to improve post production workflow, for example, culling images from a shoot by removing duplicate shots, or people with their eyes closed etc. I also think it will provide inspiration for creating images and stimulating ideas. It will also be used by the lazy and the untalented button-pressers. Similarly, there will be generes for which it will be a boon, and others where it will have no place. At the end of the day, it's just another tool in the box.

It's funny, yesterday I was watching a live chat with Zack Snyder and he said that as creators what we have that matters most is our vision, the way we see the world and how it goes through us, we are the prism. And that that is something AI can't imitate.

AI is like your favourite (ehm) high school robot student. It can recite all the facts fed into its algorithm, but it lacks the individual experience that makes human passion, wonder, love and hate possible. I doubt that AI will ever be able to produce the kind of photography that raises spontaneously from human emotions.

There are so many video of photographers saying that AI will never replace this or that. That is probably true in regard of passion and love we put in it but it is also true that a lot of commercial photography will be replaced by AI, same way as CGI replaced photography in commercial work early 2000. I am also sure that not too far in the future photos for news and general stock images will be replaced by AI. Surely there will be new positions and possibilities that will open up and new jobs created. That is how is see it don't hate me, I love photography film or digital as a way to express myself but we will probably be a smaller number in the future.

In the commercial field I would agree with you. Ethically I feel the news and documentary would be a step too far - though changing images for the sake of political or social narrative need isn't ofc anything new. I don't hate AI, I use it everyday and I'm excited by it's possibilities. Thanks for watching!

AI can't anticipate the potential emotion of people and animals. I try to always anticipate and or look for the moment that an emotion happens to people and animals. I have some very different photo's of common birds and animals. That happens in an instant which AI can't conceive of.

Very recently I tried to have AI organize my files based on my subdirectories with the ability to recommend new subdirectories. I'd say it was 40% effective (ballpark) on putting things where they should be. It was still useful, but it lacked creativity in making a decision. It was more of logical guessing than understanding the implication of what the file could contain. AI has difficulty understanding the bigger picture of something and even the smaller picture. It's like it can only understand a broad range but nothing specific. This is why it won't replace photography, it can't contextualize art.

Same thing about human to human relations... but look what digital social media did. If IA image create emotions that is it. Photography won't die but it will be same as painting now. Expensive and only for passionate people with a lot of time on their hands.

I believe AI is like moving from analog to digital photography and from painting to photographing or from modern painting to classical one, it's a new form of art. I tried a bit on dall-E and didn't get easily any good results. The danger is using it to create fake photography and sell them for real. Like laws were made to write if the model in the photo was photoshoped the same must be done about AI .

As my husband says A.I is not art, it has no soul, real art real images of real things and people are beautiful because of the life in them, A.I cannot replicate that.

True that AI can't replicate the passion injected into a photograph, but unfortunately your average person doesn't pick up on that (or care)- just us that do this as a hobby/profession. Majority of people were still falling for bad PS tricks before AI came along. There will still be a demand for human generated photos at events or of famous landmarks, but unfortunately i think AI is about to make selling stock images and random prints for wall art a thing of the past 😢

Great video, thanks. Yes, AI will not be able to replace the Passion in Photography, but AI will become better and more creative. Some of the images on Midjourney are really already now mind-blowing. AI will replace most of the commercial photographers like in Fashion, food and product photography. That will have a large impact on camera makers, who will produce and develop less new camera and lens models. The lawsuits from Getty Image and others are just a desperate move to stop what can't be stopped anymore.

A.I. , cannot replicate much less replace FEEL. Which is also inherent in music played by a human.

AI Tools, like Content Aware Fill in PS. Topaz Gigapixel AI , Masking Tools in LR, they are very useful. So is sky replacement in PS, if you are replacing it with a sky you shot yourself. From taking the photo to the final edit. All are my decisions

AI doesn’t have the human soul and never will. Photographers that make me go WOW have soul.

Another thing I was thinking AI cannot replace is the moment. Event photography. AI could take an image of me and my friend and place us in front of the Eiffel tower. But it means nothing. A picture taken by a boy with my cell phone, cannot be replaced. I was there and all the memories that surround that. AI can't do that. Maybe when a robot can run around and take pictures, but I wouldn't want that. I would want a human doing it.
