The Hebridean Way | Bikepacking Adventure
The trip of a life time! This one’s a biggie….
Neither Joe or Ferg had been on a bikepacking trip before and so the idea to start on what could be one of the best and most scenic routes in the world was an obvious first choice. Another key objective was to start and finish from their home town of Fort William and so that’s what they did. There followed an impromptu spending spree to get the necessary kit, strapping it on the bikes and hitting the road with a wing and a prayer.
The first leg was a quick 50 miles down the coast to Oban where the ferry would depart and take the boys over to the start of the Hebridean Way, on the Isle of Barra. From here it was incredible beaches, mountains, causeways, ferry crossings and majority wilderness. For a first trip on loaded bikes this couldn’t have been a better start. As with all trips, however, there were a few bumps in the road and some hills to overcome, but that the boys did and they returned triumphant from their week away on the road.
If anything was learned then it must have been that going by bike is a great way to see a new place, take in the sights and to return buzzing with a satisfyingly lead-like feeling in the legs.

Finally got around to watching the full thing. So good from start to finish. Had some serious laughs at the 'once in a lifetime experience' part as I was sitting there thinking that looks like a fun week of riding.

That would be the absolute dream. I have been to NZ for mtb but can’t think of a better place to tour on a bike. I’ll look into the 90mile beach

Brilliant video we don't this with 4 kids in July youngest being 4 i pulled him along 😁 and oldest 10 from start to finnish took us 8 days with 1 day rest on luskentyre was amazing definitely recommend.
Buiding on the Dudes and Fellowship of the Party Rings... Done this on the bike myself - so can highly recommend it. Incredible scenery the whole way up. As most of my family still live in Ness (some in Eoropaidh, the last village before the finish at the lighthouse), this is great to see. Love the cliff jumping at Stoth...

Loved this video. You guys did this ride with style! We’re heading there ourselves first week of July and have been freshly inspired. We had heard some horror story’s about hitting midge season this time of year but seems they weren’t a big problem for you? Also - side question! Nice kit. What is the brand and range with the big daisy - you had a race jersey and and a jumper! Well done lads!

Awesome video guys. I am doing the same trip next week!!! Would you mind answering a couple of questions? 1. Does the route start as soon as you get off the ferry or do you have to cycle a bit to find the start of the route? Did you bother going to the start of the route or did you just start from the ferry port? 2. Do you need any means of navigating throughout or is it well sign-posted? Is there any danger of going the wrong way? 3. How did you go about getting water? This has been something that has been on my mind. Is there plenty of opportunities/ taps to fill up along the way? Thank you so much guys and any other tips would be awesome!

We went end of June and it was perfect. Theres going to be some luck with the weather either way at any time of year out west. Early May is good for less midges. But we had hardly any anyway. good luck on you’re journey.

We were lucky with a good breeze for most of the trip to keep them away. The one still and claggy evening they came out to play.
What bikes are these? Hybrid between road/MTB?

Yep, a bit of both. Road bikes with bigger grippier tyres. Some call them gravel bikes

They are Orange RX9 gravel bikes.

Not sure, I though they were the same. Touring has a certain charm though. I think I’ll use that next time. What’s the difference?
