What a great human being and a true American hero. Always remember he was the first professional athelete to enlist after December 7, 1941. I can't see a modern day superstar sacrificing 4 prime time years for his country. RIP Mr Feller

I met Bob Feller in a press box at the Fairgrounds stadium here in Louisville in 1983 or so. He seemed very large, but was humble and blunt-spoken. His right hand was so big that when we shook, it felt as if I had stuck my hand into a hunk of country ham. His engulfed mine.

I played sandlot ball in the Cleveland area for a few years and had the good fortune to play on Mr. Fellers Teams. He was, what everyone says, a great man devoted to His Family, Country and to Baseball. I am proud to say “I knew this Great Individual”

without a doubt one of the best. i'd venture to say he'd have won 30 in one of those years he was at war. he lost 4 years in the prime of his career, before the war he won 24, 27, and 25 games, after 4 years in the war he won 26, 20, 19, 15, 16, 22.

He lost what could have been his best 4 years to the war, and yet "experts" seem to forget about him when making out "best pitchers ever" lists. Very unfair. DiMaggio and William's stars never fade, but Feller's name is being forgotten.

107 wins at age 22, then served 4 years in military. Think about that - 107 wins at age 22!!! 107 wins is a career for most pitchers. Had he not served Bob probably would have 100 more wins or thereabouts meaning he'd have won over 350 games.

Had there been no WW II and he pitched the four years, 42 through '45 he would have been in his pitching prime, his mid to late '20's. My guess is he would have averaged 23 wins per season with two more no-hitters, ending his career with 350 wins as a minimum.
@theshrivelstein7118

I think he averaged 17 wins over a 162 game season..he would have easily made 335 wins but he was a great pitcher, so 350-360 are easily projected. Imagine lebron joining the military in the prime of his career. Makes you think and also appreciate these old school gents mentality and commitment.
