The Urban Heat Island effect refers to the phenomenon where urban areas are significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas due to the heat that is absorbed and released by the built environment (including buildings, sidewalks, roadways, and more). Addressing the Urban Heat Island effect is an important component of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in urban areas - particularly in cities where large populations are vulnerable to the negative impacts of rising temperatures.
As cities grow and develop, they often replace natural vegetation and open land with impervious surfaces such as concrete and asphalt, which absorb and retain more heat than natural surfaces. Human activities such as transportation, industry, and air conditioning systems also generate heat, adding to the warming effect.
To mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect, cities can create green spaces, use reflective materials, improve building design, incorporate water features, encourage alternative transportation, and raise public awareness about energy efficiency. These strategies can help reduce temperatures in cities and improve their livability.

Urban forestry is the act of maintaining, protecting, and in One Tree Planted’s case - planting - urban forests. All within the backdrop of a rapidly changing landscape. Each individual urban tree is different in species and size, yet all link together to form urban forests. They are powerhouses for providing ecosystem services such as air pollution removal, stormwater pollution capture, carbon sequestration, and urban heat regulation, and form essential green infrastructure for any healthy, vibrant community.
One Tree Planted has a rapidly growing Urban Forestry program that works with communities around the globe to plant trees in neighborhoods that need them the most. We partner with local organizations to implement projects and provide pass-through funding for trees, labor, and project maintenance, while also providing overall project support, impact assurance, and monitoring.
