I saw this in the movie theater when I was about 8 or 9. I was transfixed by its characters, especially Mr. Singer.

The visual framing of the scenes reminds me of Edward Hopper paintings.

I saw this on March 28, 1976. I was 14 years old. I felt a sad chain of loneliness.Later, I read in a book "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter."Recently, Haruki Murakami translated it into Japanese.

A heartbreaking film. Arkin deserved the Oscar. Nothing against Robertson but Charley was not his best work.

This is really the saddest movie I think I"ve ever seen. I stopped talking for about 2 weeks because I thought Singer could help all these people without talking so maybe I could do.

I've been a fan of Arkin ever since seeing him in The Russians are coming. As the villain, Roat, in Wait Until Dark, Popi, The In-laws, Catch-22, he has shown his ability to play diverse characters. In this role, his scenes with Chuck McCann were heartbreaking.
Arkin was excellent as the deaf mute. He lost out to Cliff Robertson for Oscar.

Not a perfect movie by any means, and a lot of people don't like the way it deviates from the book, but if this scene doesn't move you you really are cold.

40年近く前12歳の時に見た映画だ。あまりにも悲しくてトラウマになった。 この「愛すれど心さびしく」と「まごころを君に」原作(アルジャーノンに花束を)の2作品は一度見たら絶対忘れられない映画になる。
