The Hawks Need To Start Over

Спорт

The Atlanta Hawks are going nowhere. Since making the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, Trae Young's Hawks have regressed each and every year. Despite adding Dejounte Murray from the Spurs in 2022 the Hawks are currently barely scraping by in the Eastern Conference with little path forward to winning a championship with their current core. It may be a difficult decision to make, but its time for the Atlanta Hawks to start over.

I feel like the falloff was so predictable too. It's not like they beat a team like the Bucks or Nets or some genuine A-level contender, it was the pre-Brunson Knicks that everyone kinda felt was a fluke and a Sixers team that beat themselves more than anything.

As a Hawks fan I don't think people consider issues when claiming we should rebuild. Our ownership led by Tony Ressler is incompetent and lately makes moves to save money. Landry Fields isn't experienced enough to get the proper pieces back in a trade. Also, I don't think a trade of Trae Young would yield the return big enough to have a successful rebuild. The team holds onto players for too long like John Collins, Clint Capela and now Dejounte Murray. I wish people actually understood that the issues aren't due to Trae Young-but are at the feet of ownership.

I wish y'all talked more about Trae and the Spurs, especially since San Antonio has Atlanta's 2025 & 2027 picks unprotected (& a 2026 Swap). If the Hawks wanted to blow it up and rebuild, they'd need those picks. It makes the Spurs their best trade partner, especially since that's one of the few places where Trae would be a good 2nd option fit next to Wembanyama.

How about try to get a second star to compliment the player you would blow it up for. They're just gonna get another good rookie make the playoffs then a year later blow it up again? Inversely, it disincentivizes the Spurs from making that trade. If the Hawks want a rebuild, those picks are arguably as valuable as both Trae and Murray put together. The Spurs might prefer to keep them in their back pocket and shoot for the moon. Goodness knows the Spurs are lucky enough with the lottery. Watch something stupid happen like they end up grabbing both Cooper Flagg and Ace Bailey next year.

as a hawks fan that tries to watch as many games as possible this season even though I'm from the uk. It's very simple what our problem is. 1. Dejounte Murray is a Point guard. He isn't a SG and isn't able to defend to an elite standard at that position. is he bad? no, but he's not what we wanted for that. the best player for the role he's in right now which we were trying to get at the deadline is Herb Jones. he would make us a better defensive team and is an actual SG. 2. Ownership. terrible decisions that have changed our timeline. The DJ move i'll give them was a good. move in the right direction with a good idea that just didn't seem to translate as it looked on paper. But the John collins move took 2 years too long and we could have got way more then just a salary dump. its dwindling value in players on our team that we don't capitalise on. I fear the same will have for Hunter and Capela who are starting to regress value wise. Hunter is especially bad. Injury prone and a lack of improvement. He's been good since he came back and ill give him that he's consistent when he plays but as a 4th pick in a draft its painful. Capela is much different. He's older then we need and Is holding back okungwu. only recently has he started to be the main centre and he playing really well. But capela is healthy, consistent and our best interior defender. we need a replacement or teams like the bulls who we have problems with because of our interior defense and horror rebounding which makes an Andre Drummond look like an map candidate. These two need to move this summer. One thing I would say that I don't agree with in your video. Trae is no longer a total negative on defense and I'm going to be honest I think Dame has been worse THIS SEASON. I saw someone say this and I think he said it best, he's a net zero on defense. The effort is now there, he's stealing the ball and has been one of the better players at doing that this season. Trae is just victim to genetics as many are, too short and too weak to handle a Luka or the taller guards in the new NBA. ill give him credit for his defense, his offence gets on my nerves. Just looking at the stats you see an elite scorer and an elite passer, the records he's broken show he's one of a kind yet he's an extremely inefficient player, he's taken 160 30 FT THREES THIS SEASON. Dame has taken around 50 or 60. That's too much, that's why he's so inefficient, its just bad shot decisions no matter how good of a deep three maker he is. But again you have to give him credit that he's a one of a kind type of offensive talent, its hard to make a good comparison to him as a player because no one has had the shot taking with playmaking at that level that he's had. There's a strong chance Trae will break more records the three point one seems to look very doable right now. But I don't blame him and I don't think you can. Trae is Luka but short and skinnier so we got the short end of the stick in the trade. its pretty obvious but you still got dealt a strong hand its all about how you build. I don't trust this team to build about him right but the best option is to retool get players that fit better now you've learnt what works because we have no time left. This summer everything should change. Keep JJ OO Trae they are the only ones safe. I like Bogi he would be 6MOY on a good team but he's on a 10th seed but he's definitely available. Trade Hunter and capela. as well as Aj Griffin ( hasn't played and doesn't want to. ) Bey can leave inn free agency and then you try to be smart with what you do. DJ is on a large contract we can do anything but a trade is inevitable. The pelican trade for Herb jones is my preference. Just hoping this organisation can get some luck and make smart decisions

The Dejounte Murray trade only makes sense if you can convince Trae to play off-ball on offense a lot of the time. That honestly should have been an easy sell, as DJ is a proven distributor. Once the chemistry developed, Trae could stretch the defense, DJ and Clint can go to work in a PnR, and *somebody* is getting an open look every time. That's not how Trae operates, though, so here we are.

He generated steals, but he got beat a fair amount off the dribble and struggled with off ball rotations/help as well. For me, it was evident from the start that he wouldn’t play very well beside Trae, especially on that end.

I really don't understand why people are suprised about Trae's lack of aptitude to be really competitive in the league. He's obviously a great player, but the amount of HOF talent you'd need around him to reasliticaly compete for a ring is just delusional. He's a guy that can easily be abused defensively in the playoffs and is not good enough off-ball. That doesn't exclude that fact the he is a max player to a lot of people, and rightful so. But in the real world, how would you be able to pay 3/4 HOF players to compensate for his deficiencies? It's just not possible man, unless you draft 3 generational talents in a row which is just not gonna happen with Hawks performing as a mid-table team

I have no dog on the Hawks. I'm a Sactown fan and only really paid attention to Trae Young when we go Huerter. To Hawks fans, your GM fleeced ya drafting him thinking he was the next Curry. Trae Young is simply a stat padder. He's really a 20 and 10 pg. He just shoots 15 free throws a game. You cannot win building around him. He's too small, cannot play defense and that alone taxes the whole team. We can't even win with D Fox and he's lightyears ahead of Trae defensively and deserved all star over Trae.

This would be an extremely short sighted move for the hawks tbh i mean look at Detroit they tried to rebuild and its been 20 years since theyve been anything more then an 8th seed. Its just way to early to start blowing things up even if trae has his problems hes still got time to improve and the team around him is still geneally quite young this isnt the lakers where every player is in his prime or past it, you can realsitcally expect improvement from guys like okongwu and youve got allot of youg trade pieces to move with a guy like dejonte murray next time a star trades available. I get you guys are portland fans and are used to short rebuild periods but thats really not how it always works.

why would you love this trade from spurs perspective please? it makes no sence! don't get me wrong, trae is great, but he is probably one of the worst "max contract" guys you could pick up, any team who wants to pick up trae need a ROCK SOLID defence around him.. besides wemby who is already making a case for dpoy, the spors got a very mediocre defence..

I think it’s time to blow it up. They are not bad, but they aren’t good either. The worst place to be. So if they are not good enough to contend. Get younger and get your best players on contenders. They don’t have crazy contracts so it will be an easier situation to handle

If Trae did get traded, maybe the Raptors would take him. I mean, he'd more than likely be in the same situation as he is right now with the Hawks. But maybe he'd stay there for a year or two and then get traded to a real contender.

@@DaltonBurrowsz defensive rating is a team statistic. It can vastly underrate or overrate individual defense. *Especially* for guards and centers. KCP has a defensive rating of 116 (compared to his team’s overall defensive rating of 114) but nobody would call him a bad defender if they know anything about basketball. Also, no he doesn’t. As of today, Trae’s D-Rating is 123 to Murray’s 122. Both are awful, though, so who cares?
