The Haunted Legends of Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I wander the winding pathways of Rosehill cemetery in Chicago and explore the early history and scary stories surrounding some of its most visited monuments. I delve into the history of the gothic gatehouse at the cemetery’s entrance and share a scary ghost story connected to it, as well as a bizarre encounter that occurred at the gate in 2015.
I visit Jacob Franks mausoleum and tell the sad ghost story of Bobby Franks, the victim of Leopold and Loeb in the 1920’s. I showcase the fascinating monuments for Frances Pearce Stone, Lulu Fellows, and Darius Miller, and share the haunted legends behind them. I also explore the peculiar ‘Devil’s Grave’, the chapel, and the haunted Rosehill mausoleum where 10,000 people are laid to rest.

Excellent video. I was the police in that district (020) for 13yrs.I have been through every corner of that place at every time of day, even midnights. Never heard or saw anything. However, we did respond to an alarm call at night at the mausoleum. We were met with the keyholder and entered. As we approached the area where the alarm was triggered he stopped in his tracks as we all looked at an open door to the basement. He stated " I have the only key to that door and it was locked when I closed up earlier" I was ready to run down and hopefully get the life scared out of me but the prevailing Sgt. called for the dogs to investigate. OK, P.S. to the story. The dog handler said his K9 was going crazy at a couple areas (scent?) but he couldn't see or find anyone/anything....Who knows, that's my only story......

Wow, that's creepy! Thank you for sharing this. I do remember seeing a winding staircase in the old section that went down to the basement. I didn't go down there. Do you know of anyone ever getting locked inside the mausoleum or cemetery overnight? I'm sure it's happened. That would be scary as hell getting locked inside that mausoleum.

@@StrangeandSinister1 Funny you ask, my partner and I thought it was someone in the basement-possibly homeless that broke in via window well to gain access. The interesting part is the dog...they are usually right when notifying their handler of someone being there, a person etc.....and the mystery goes on

I wonder if anyone has ever been accidentally locked in there. The mausoleum is so big and it would be hard to find someone walking around in there unless there are cameras. I was worried about getting lost in there and locked in because it was getting close to closing time. It's a fear of mine... getting locked inside a building like that.

@@StrangeandSinister1 Good question, never to my knowledge but on a side note if you can get a look - we may have been lucky at the time (or in uniform) but inside/behind the chapel is a morgue or holding area as you described in the video complete with the sliding trays for the deceased. That was something to see. It is visible through the skylights behind the chapel on the hill if you decide to walk up there (it's underground) I was also told the train would drop numerous bodies from the war off. I believe they blocked off some of the pathways to the tracks besides the elevator that you showed.

I have never been to Rosehill but grew up in Palatine also on the north side. My grade school was right next to a very old cemetery and I was fascinated with it. It was strictly forbidden but I would slip thru the hedge and disappear inside it at recess. Just the age of the graves and dates were so interesting. The elevator was used almost daily for decades bringing funeral trains of mourners out from downtown during it's early years. I had blueprints of the station that was torn down in the late 1950s. The station also was a stop for the residents until it was decommissioned in the late 1940s. My great grandfather settled in the area around 1877 or so when the area was it's own town of Andersonville prior to being annexed to Chicago

Thanks for the video. I live in the neighborhood where Roseland is located. It’s actually a lovely place to take a walk in the spring, summer and fall. Many beautiful big old trees and water features. They have tours of the cemetery on a periodic basis. The mausoleum is ominous to walk through but so very interesting from a historical perspective. Likewise if you walk through the cemetery with your phone and just search on some of the names you learn so much about Chicago history. Not just the big names but a lot of regular people and the story of their lives at another time. I’ve heard some of the stories about ghosts or hauntings, but have never felt anything on that level. It’s just a bit eerie when you are by yourself and it is a place with thousands of interred dead people. Lots of people use the cemetery to take walks or for running.

American cemeteries are so different than European ones. In Europe there are plants and flowers around graves. Every quarter they can be changed to reflect the current season. Famlies spend time there gardening and some have a playground so the kids can play while parents take care of the graves. We played while our parents were doing genealogy research.

Some of our cemeteries are similar to that but no playgrounds. Graceland cemetery in Chicago (I did a video on it) is park-like. There's a lake and benches, and people spend the afternoon there. In the summer, the flowers and landscaping there is really nice.

I grew up down the block (4900 N. Ravenswood) from there but hadn't heard all the stories about it. In 2008 a friend of mine wanted to find her relatives grave there and we drove in a ways and got out of the car to look around. When we got back in to go the car started but I couldn't put it into gear to leave no matter what I did. Since it was almost closing time and I didn't want to leave the car there overnite I went into the office to find out what to do and they rather ignored me. I guess they'd heard it all before but finally they told me where to find the emergency override so I could get out of there. Wierd place!!! Bigtime energy!!!

Rosehill is in Chicago (north side). You might be thinking of Calvary cemetery in Evanston.

Crawls out of Lake Michigan and crosses the road into the cemetery? It's a cool story. I'll definitely do a video on Calvary and feature the story some time. I'm gonna be doing some true crime videos but the channel will have a mix of true crime and haunted locations with some graveyard tour stuff.
