    Rousey's undoing was her coaches convincing her that she should be a striker. She actually started to regress. Went from quickly taking out women who knocked Nunes out, to wading into a fire fight that only a fool would have advised her to do. The Rousey that lost to Holm and Nunes, would ALSO have gotten destroyed by the Rousey from 2 yrs earlier.

    You're going by a casual popular narrative, first off rousey didn't fight hee toughest competition which would've been gina Carano and cyborg, she was shielded from them and hyped as better then everyone until the talent wasn't part time fighters, when she fought Holm she definitely tried to take her down but Holm defended everything and that broke rousey simply because rousey couldn't bully her, that's the end of that story, she just wasn't what the ufc hoped her up to be, the woman who could strangle everyman alive😅😅

    It's not that the fights are bad. They are often just boring. With two dad bods at low to mid tier heavyweight, you at least still have the reasonable expectation, that one connects and ends the battle of the land whales in a sudden way. Contrast that to the unanimous decision parade in WMMA, where one fighter is clearly better, but never ever even comes close to a finish, while also never being threatened. And these fights are often recognizable as same, longe before the final horn. Sure, you also see these with the men. But they are not only more frequent with the women, they are also more lopsided. Even in complete missmatches, you remarkably often see nothing but point fighting, when it comes to WMMA! That is one thing, and one thing only: Boring as fuck.

    I’ve been recently watching the One cards since it got added to Amazon and it seems like their women’s division is much more developed and exciting. It’s also not some niche promotion. I’m still a fan of the women’s divisions. I love Weili Zhang, and now her closest competitor Yan Xiaonan would be a massive title fight for the Chinese market, if Zhang gets through Lemos. Their strawweight division also has Mackenzie Dern clawing her way towards that title shot if she keeps fighting like she did against Hill at UFC Fight Night on 5/20/2023. Not to mention a Grasso and Shevchenko title rematch. However, Nunes is probably in her twilight and the bantamweight doesn’t seem to have very many fresh exciting female stars on the rise. But Weili and Jędrzejczyk showed that two women can go to war blow the roof off the place, so it’s up to the UFC to scout and foster that talent to build up those divisions and give these women the opportunities they need.

A #7 vs #9 fight in the women's division can look worse than a contender series men's fight. Then when you look at the talent, nunes, valentina, rose, they either dont have the personalities to put them over (amanda) or they don't do enough media and convey their personality (valentina, rose, weili) the best thing for the sport honestly in my opinion was joanna, rose, and weili providing parity to that division, but they didnt promote it right at all. now with no cyborg, there isn't much parity in the sport at all. I think 115 and 125 are coming up, but still drop off after ~#10

    I totally agree with the points you make - the points that feel like they should never be stated. I remember "Rousey mania" - so foolish. I couldn't believe all the male UFC commentators, Dana White, + the fans of the sport being so quick to label a girl a "superstar" because she submits others quickly all do to armbars. I keep thinking "wait what else can she do" + when Holly Holm made her look like an amateur + KO'd her suddenly the spell was broken. I follow men's UFC but rarely watch a female event. I hope that Chandler, Rodriguez, + Covington will all win in their great upcoming fights!

    Amanda Nunes is considered the women's goat not because she is a superstar but because she is the best at what she does. On the other hand, Ronda Rousey was a global superstar and at one time, the best woman fighter alive. There's a difference as not every fighter can become Connor or Ronda. If you think women's mma started its downfall after the departure of Ronda, then how is it that Weili vs Joanna 1 became the fight over the year, how is it that Amanda Nunes's defeat to Penna became the biggest upset in history.

  • @TRiniLukey

    @TRiniLukey

    Жыл бұрын

    Rhonda departed in 2016, the fight you're talking about was in 2020, he wasn't referring to 2020 he was referring to what happened after she left and not what became afterwards. Also Rhonda wasn't a global superstar but she was popular and mainstream enough to become one afterwards. At the time, UFC also had other fighters such as Meisha, Holly, Chris, Liz and even Sarah Kaufman, these women were also as good as Rhonda but not as popular. Amanda Nunes is not called the goat because she is good at what she does, she is called the goat because she is simultaneously defending two belts. 7 to 9 years ago Nunez wasn't as good as she was now, but something changed. The same can be said when both Nunez and Holms defeated Rhonda, biggest upsets too. However, if we wanna talk about the greatest female fighter of all time, then on paper that would be Chris Cyborg, she only lost once to Nunes (one of her two loses), have won the featherweight championship over 3 or 4 separate promotions and have over 11 defenses over such promotions. Keep in mind that she only ever lost one of her belt to Nunez and that was in UFC. Nunez has also only defended the featherweight belt 2 or 3 times, she mostly defended her bantomweight. Rhonda on the other hand defended that same belt about 7 times and was also the strike force champion before ufc bought then over. And also right now Valentina had 7 defenses im her weightclass before losing her belt with a single mistake.

Then there are a lot of what ifs, like "if Prime Tony fought Khabib he would win". I got caught up a few times too aint going to lie lol. The problem with WMMA is that, outside of Rousey and (to a lesser extent) Cyborg, none of the women ever were a draw in the UFC. Even when Nunes headlined against Shevchenko, it turned out to be box office poison. Despite this fight being put together, when it was very intriguing from a competitive point of view and pitted the two most dominant champs against each other. Here is the crux: WMMA fights have less finishes than the men's fights, which makes them feel less intriguing and more foreseeable on average. I mean: How many women's fights have you seen, where one fighter clearly had the upperhand and was coasting to a decision? Sure, that happens with men, too. But in WMMA it is the most common outcome. Because WMMA does produce more decisions than any male weight class (the majority of which are unanimous). This just completely sabotages this notion of "anything can happen at any moment", which is so important for the appeal of a fight! Even Nunes turned into a decision machine, even though she used to finish. Rousey’s popularity completely hinged upon her being first to market and her mangling her opponents in no time. But that only worked, as long as Rousey was the Royce Gracie of WMMA: A dangerous specialist, who benefited from being the one-eyed among the blind. Once the sport caught up to her, she got found out hard.

    There are exciting UFC WMMA fights still to be made. We're just not seeing them (yet). Shevchenko/Grasso rematch. Shevchenko got caught. But she is still a dominate force. Will she return a "Nunes" or a "Rousey"? Weili/Namajunas 3. Is Rose the kryptonite to Weili's domination? Or can Weili finally get that monkey off her back. And perhaps the most exciting, Nunes/Shevchenko 3. That second fight was so close, that many thought it should have gone to Shevchenko. Shevchenko jumped divisions, and continued dominating (until Grasso). Bring those 2 back together, and it would be the biggest UFC WMMA fight since Cyborg/Nunes or Nunes/Rousey.

    There are several factors that can be attributed to the current state of wmma, but I think the biggest factor is that there isn't a dominant female champion marketable enough to attract casual fans the way Rousey did. It doesn't help that the UFC really doesn't give a crap to promote their female athletes the way ONE champion does. To be fair they do the same to 90% the males, its just that a lot of the males promote themselves better to stick out. As for the hardcore fans, there aren't enough Zhang-Joanna fights to keep them interested. For what it's worth, I really do think Nunes vs Aldana has the potential to be a good fight as long as the fight doesn't get finished early. As long as they don't fight an opponent that like to stink up the place with their boring fight style (Shevchenko, Holm) Nunes and Aldana usually put on fun fights.

We had some potential stars like Paige VanZant and Tracy Cortez and unfortunately that potential wasn’t because of their skills. Some fights had some hype like Weili x Namajunas or Weili x Joanna 2… We need a big fight or a big card to hype the women. If Aldana beats Nunes the UFC should make a card with Aldana x Nunes 2 headlining and Grasso x Shevchenko 2 as a co main in Mexico. This Can raise Grasso and Aldana’s popularity or set up a potential trilogy between Nunes and Shevchenko.

    The whole video is about UFC women division not MMA as you say. Other organizations doing very well with their women cards and fights. Take ONE Championship, their female fights are always entertaining and always very welcomed by their fans. That the highest problem with UFC. UFC does not care about anything but dollar sign. Health of their fighters are not important, their salary is not important, promoting their fights are not important. For UFC nothing comes even close to how much money they earn. That’s why every single fighter that left UFC is making whole a lot more money in other organizations, having a better mental and physical health and having more success. UFC is nothing but a cache machine.

    Ufc is an entertainment promotion, not fighting promotion, that's why they always build up fighters to be the greatest for promoting value. Look at Usman, before 2 losses everyone was talking how he is better than GSP, but as soon as he lost, everyone start calling him trash for beating the same journeyman guys. It will happen again and again. Dana White is here for buisness, not for fights. Remember when he said that Jones should move to middleweight instead of facing Ngannou, look at things now....

    I know it’s hard and in my opinion I don’t mind women’s mma think it’s great and Nunez is in my top 5 best fighters for sure and that includes males on that list. But one idea I have is and I know in the past it has not worked and would be hard to pull off now. N yes Amanda is still FW champ at women’s division but I think if we want more contenders and that’s the issue with women’s mma I think re opening and stacking FW division if possible is the solution. My opinion tho

    Great video lot of facts actually which is sad because high level women’s mma is great to watch. Zhang Vs Joanna nunes vs cyborg Tate vs Holm. but these fight are just few and far between.

    It's so sad to see. Rousey, Jędrzejczyk, Shevchenko and Nunes were amazing and their fights were extremely good but for some reason UFC stopped promoting them and they fell into irrelevance. To be honest the whole UFC fell into irrelevance when Dana shat on the ratings of fighters and went ham with fights he wants to see and not fights that should happen based on the ratings
