The Harley-Davidson Dyna Nobody Wanted

The Harley-Davidson Dyna nobody wanted was probably one of the best steals in all of the Harley-Davidson line up that was completely over looked. The Dyna Switchback had everything, and I mean everything. This bike was anything you wanted it to be from a cruiser to full on touring bike. You could take a Dyna Switchback and take the touring to the next level with dual exhaust, bat wing fairing and a stereo. They weighed less than a full on touring model and arguably rode just as well if not better!

Owned a Switchback for 3 seasons, thinking it would be good for short in town trips + weekend overnights. Bad decision. In town it was just boring, about as plain Jane as they come. On longer trips, I couldn’t ride it for more than an hour or two. Suspension was lacking, weak acceleration, and the turbulence was intolerable. The dyna was never meant to tour. At the time my dad had a Road King so I got to ride them back to back, man what a difference. Plush, good wind protection, and decent power. Later I spent some time touring on a Road Glide… also a nice bike. I wound up trading in the Switchback for a BMW R 1200 RT and warped into the 21st century… but that’s another story.

I purchased two Switchbacks just before Covid, to use for guests to ride at our AZ home in the winter. Only paid $7,000 per bike, Bone stock, and mileage was under 6k miles. Best HD value ever! Added batwing fairings and we’ve done 350-400 mile days with no problem.

People say it's a bike made for women or it's a Road Queen. They say real men need to ride big heavy Glides or Road Kings. So guys end up buying a bike that's too big and heavy for them to handle, so they either crash it or quit riding it and just let it sit. I say don't listen to what anyone else says. Buy a bike that you can handle and that you're comfortable riding. I sold my 2020 Yamaha MT-09 that was a veritable rocket and bought a 2012 Switchback last year. With the lower center of gravity on the Switchback I can flick around the 718 pound Harley just as easily as I could the 420 pound Yamaha. I have had two Electra Glides in the past and to me the Switchback is just as good and a hell of a lot cheaper. I'm almost 70 and have been riding motorcycles since I was 15. So I can picture myself riding the Switchback for many more years and miles. Keep up the awesome work GixxerFoo.

I have a 2013 Switchback. Memphis Shades batwing fairing, Saddlemen seat with back rest, full stage one with tune and Vance and Hines 2 into 1 exhaust, full LED lighting all around, engine guards, bag guards, sissy bar with rack, 12 inch mini apes, Legend suspension in the rear, and front and rear engine/frame braces to take care of the death wobble. What a great cruiser, and good for light touring. IMHO the best Dyna Harley ever made.

Well at 80 years old and after four broken backs causing my legs to be weak, the 2014 Dyna Switchback keeps me on the road. I think it is a great bike, lots of power, easier to get my legs over, and just happy that Harley chose to make it. As of 2024 it only has 16,000 kilometres but I can still get out to ride when my back allows me. Better than not riding at all! I wouldn’t be able to handle the bigger heavier cruisers!

To me it was the reintroduction of the original style Electra Glide that ran its course back in the early 80's when it gave way to the tri mount Tour Glide frame. Who knows how history would have gone had it been available as a platform in 1980 as opposed to 1990. Buyers would have noticed a huge difference in ride comfort and handling from the old FL/FX frame. I was blown away the first time I test rode series one Dyna and like many people preferred it to the FXR. I still have yet to test the later Dynas but for me they always looked like a solid platform. Not perfect with the swing arm on the trans but a great overall bike.

What I liked most about the Switchback are the hardbags. They fit all Dynas 2006-2017. In 2006 I got a pair of vivid black Switchback hardbags dirt cheap. I was going to flip them. Soon after that I got a real great deal on a single owner low mileage 2007 Dyna. It's vivid black. I put the Switchback bags on the Dyna and love it. I kept my stock fender and stabilized the bags with a saddlebag lower bracket off of early dresser saddlebags. Harley should have had Switchback saddlebags with a mounting kit for all the Dynas in their catalogs.

I had some lower back issues and the lower weight was a selling point for me. Also, i liked that you could have a couple different looks depending on how you needed it! Minus long haul trips, the Switchback checked most of the boxes for me! I think Harley marketed it wrong. They sold it as a step up from Sportster or a bike for women. I thought it had that ole FL kind of look and those 5 spoke wheels had a hotrod feel to them! I still get compliments on the bike and mine is a 2012. I would have loved to see an oversized saddle bag developed. And now it's hard to find any of the accessories that Harley had out for them anymore. Don't see me parting with mine!

My 2012 Switchback was my 3rd Dyna. I had an '07 Street Bob, and a 2000 Wide Glide. I liked the versatility of the Switchback. You could ride longer distances, or strip it down for around town. I ended up painting mine a custom dark blue similar to HD Billiard Blue (bike was red to begin with), adding some 13" bars, powder coating everything I could black to get rid of the chrome, put on some progressive shocks, it already had an aftermarket exhaust, and I bought a removable Glide-Pro fairing that took the place of the windshield (painted to match bike). It makes a really cool (and lighter) "bagger" in a somewhat club style. I get lots of looks and compliments on it...I still have a special place for the new Lowrider ST though, but that stems from my love for tricked out FXRTs. Overall, I've been really happy with the Switchback, but I'm sure I will eventually upgrade to something different.

We owned a 2014 Blackened cayenne color Switchback, this was sweet, but did have a harmonic vibration on the road, also as an FLD touring model it only came with a little 4.7 gallon tank, always question why the motor company did that. Was a cool machine though, wish we still had it. Great video as always!

They did it with the FXRT before the switchback, then the sport glide and now the low rider ST. Theyre usually a great entry into touring. I really liked them and wanted one pretty bad but ended with an Electra glide classic.

Picked up a 2012 in black last year. Haven't needed to do much but as the weather gets cooler, I'm gonna add the batwing, it's already setup up and tuned stage one, V&H 2-1, and a few other things. I like the bike alot, the simplicity of it, not flashy, quick, and fairly unnoticeable. I've always owned Dynas, because I don't like baggers, but this bike stops to me and has me looking at the Heritage classic now.

Liked your video. I looked at the Switchback back in 2016. Looked good and the versatilty was appealing. Passed on purchasing one and bought a Fat Boy 114 in 2018. The Switchback may have been a better choice in the long run.

Thanks Foo....oh and by the way the Switck Back has its place just not in my garage.

I currently own one and it's a love hate relationship. I bought it during covid and didn't know if I was going to become a hardcore rider. So, first thing I wish I knew about the unbalanced engine this has. It starts to vibrate at a bad frequency a 2200 rpms and right up my spine. Replaced the seat and it helps a little. Also, my feet vibrate ridiculously at normal cruising speeds. Rode a buddies Street-glide and it's silky smooth. I really don't use the "Switchback" Features much either. Just makes it easier to clean the hard to reach spots. And I just think I'm ready for touring without the buffeting from around the gas tank. I rode it 600 miles and the amount of gas stops where needed but at the same time annoying. If I just bought a touring bike I'd be comfortable longer and not need to stop so much. It has a 4.7 gal tank and gets 175 miles to every refill. I tend to fill it early cause the gauge looks lower the the tank really is. I love the 103 especially after I installed the Vance and Hines FuelPak tuner. Previous owner put the Vance and Hines Slash cut Dual exhaust and a K and N heavy breather air filter on it and it was burning kinda lean so the tuner woke this baby up so much! Love the power of the 103! The lack of dual front brakes is noticeable when two up but fine when your alone. And the small tire diameters make bumps feel more rough. And I don't want to spend the money on after market rims and tires for it. Just doesn't feel right to spend the money on a half assed touring bike that doesn't tour comfortably for me. IMO. Someone else might find it to be the perfect mix of features. Well, I'm done ranting about the switchback, I think. Love your videos. Keep them coming.

Dyna's were intended for the twisty especially the FXDL , it Lay's down real well especially when comparing to FXDWG which is just a Cruiser for tooling down the road taking in the scenery ! I put approximately $6,000.00 into my 2001 Dyna low Rider , cams , Mikuni 45 , 95 BIG Bore , Thunder header , dual disc up front , and forward controls , one and 1/4 Chubby drag bars, mini scissy bar. Drive it like you stoled it ! L.O.L. Power in and power out ! Not , for the weak at heart...get on shut up ! And hold on....LL KOOL RAY 😎 FRISCO FOOL ! I THOUGHT YOU KNEW ! Black , and chrome a real midnight marauder , oh' yeah remove the stock directional signal went with Whisker license plate w/ blinkers in frame .And the front stock blinkers removed and put sleek minute blinkers on fork tube for a cleaner streamline look
