The armor is metal and the shield is probably wood, you know force transfers through things right? It's why football players still get concussions. If you've ever boxed your know that you can still get knocked out through you gloves if the guy has the power. Boxing headgear is another example, force just transfers through. Same thing happening here, the armor doesnt do anything against blunt force trauma.

Medics came around every 5 rounds average because they're beating the fuck out of each other. Saw broken arms, lower legs, wrists and dislocated bones in those three days. One guy almost died because his helmet flew off and the other guy was just about to hit him on the head with a polearm, luckily the refs there are very cautious and quik not like this ref. Shit is awesome and becoming really popular in Europe, especially in Eastern Europe.

These are some of the toughest dudes i've ever met. They fight with concussions and broken bones and they PAY to do it because they absolutely love it. I grew up & also worked with some dudes who did SCA & went to Pennsic Wars annually. They used to play a game where 2 men would drink, then each hold 1 end of a pole & take turns hitting each other in the head with swords until one gave up or got knocked out...and they never gave up. They no longer allow this game due to too many head injuries despite the helmets 😂😂😂

I love the stadium’s location it fits the vibe perfectly

in other sports like Buhurt they have a brightly coloured flag on a pole to interrupt. The refs push the flag right into the fighter's FOV and everbody stops. Even in HEMA, which is with modern gear and less blunt force, refs usually have a wooden staff to put between the fighters if necessary.

What an insane judge, the fighter almost killing the other and the judge on the other side of the ring talking to the audience. Then he comes back and sees if the guy is still alive.

The ref has a real schrodinger's cat situation when they wear that much armor.

...And then you find out it's in Russia and you're no longer shocked.

0:49 Is just terrible job by ref. Guy is not watching at a good angle, and is in no hurry to get a better vantage point. Especially since 1 fighter has mounted the other, and is now delivering hits to a grounded oppent. Very obvious to us viewers/camera how bad this was because of our better angle, so its refs job to actually try to keep a good eye on things instead of just staying way back and barely moving.

No, he wasn't knocked out, he had severe left arm problem when landing on it, that is the most common issue in fights like this, severe injuries include displacement of joints. It is not a matter of hammering that the winning opponent did, just because he slammed him with fist doesnt mean this guy was knocked out, he was injured during falling down.

We created a new sport. A mixture of historical swordsmanship and mixed martial arts and called it the M-1 Medieval

As a show and combat sport it's a great idea, I don't know why it's not more popular.

Mostly the cost. You see, armor is made out of tempered steel so you wouldn't be stuck in it if the dents are too much. Such suit of armor will cost about 3-6 grand and if you want it custom made to look cooler add another few thousands. Also weapons should be durable enough to survive several fights a day. So to get all the equipment you're looking at minimum of 4-5 thousands dollars. Consider that getting such equipment across the border is difficult and you have to pay a hefty fee.

I bet this is closer to actual knight fights back in the mid evil times then the well choreographed majestic fights we see on L.O.T.R and G.O.T

There was likely a bit of both. They did have varying armor / weapons "systems" and tactics so there was definitely some level of battlefield complexity (not just hordes of people running at each other and eventually piling on top of each other).

Against an opponent in armor you wouldn't use a sword, but a blunt weapon (including the handle of your sword if you don't have a dedicated blunt weapon). Then you would try to smash your opponent with your blunt weapon. And if you end up on the ground, which would most probably happen, you would use the knife you always keep to try to find a gap in the armor and stab your opponent. Then, up until the battle of Azincourt where the English broke most of the rules of war which applied back then, you would try not to kill your opponent but rather kidnap him to ask for ransom money (if you had the money and right to have an armor you were noble, period, because warfare was the nobles' job). The English killed all their French prisoners, which was the most perfidious and honorless thing one could do, and killed chivalry.

It’s good that I’m too old to do this and never knew about it when I was young. I would have even more joint pain than I live with today.

Yeah, taking the blade and ends off the weapon changes the sport into something almost entirely separate than the point of such combat.

That's what it used to be like when it first started, but it wasn't entertaining to watch to guys stand inches away from each other smacking each other's legs to see who could reach the score limit faster. So they've been tweaking the rules to make it more historically accurate. Notice how they now try to cover themselves with the shield as they strike, and they grapple. Those are real medieval fighting techniques. You strike with sword and move the shield with your arm to protect it and your body, and when you can, get your opponent on the ground. Much better than what they're still doing on Battle of the Nations. But, if you'd like to see truly elegant medieval swordsmanship, look up Swordfish Longsword. HEMA is a rabbit hole that's almost to good to get lost in.

i can see this being dominanted by MMA practitioners. When weapons are rendered useless. Things like wrestling and Jiu Jitsu come into play. After all, JJ was designed to kill or cripple heavily armour opponents.

​@Let Loose The Beast a punch with the edge of the shield is an effective move in any case, but depending on the ruleset, it might or might not give points. These rules you see here were deliberately designed to resemble mma, as far as I'm aware. It's not exactly historically accurate (no system is today), but still more so then most romanticized fantasies of nobility in books and movies. Search for HEMA if you want something authentic yet also somewhat more resembling "noble arts" ;))

Historically through many accounts there was a notion that being fully armored in melee could shield you but that same armor can potentially trap you. This made you a dangerous and impervious opponent but what was your greatest asset(plate armor) could change to your worst weakness when you take them to the ground. This video is about the best evidence to that notion

Fun fact, some guys have actually gotten blades embedded in their skulls and flesh because they go full force. Even with armor on they still crack their skulls, makes me appreciate those stories of when this used to be normal for people.
