I'm not an actor nor do I have any interest in acting, but I have recently stumbled upon this channel by accident, and have not stopped watching since. It is always refreshing to see someone so connected and authentic in their craft. All the best to you John Windsor-Cunningham.

I always in an underlying way wanted to be an actor, performing for everyone throughout life. I was expected to be an academic and this was making me miserable. 3rd year of my degree and it comes time to hand in my dissertation. This is after some personal tragedies. The week it is due in I requested a transfer to performing arts, I get an audition and I crushed it, the lecturer just gave me praise said I'm in the right place. I teared up a little and since then I've had that happy feeling everyday constantly improving and challenging myself. I feel truly privileged to pursue acting! Your videos are phenomenal, hopefully one day I'll be in your position.

You're right, even if your word was just a passing thought - that 'hope' gets us places, but all the actors I know who actually "work" hard at getting work eem to get quite a lot. But enough of me and this. Bye.

hows things now?

i'm a college student and i live in algeria (a country in north africa). my dream is to become an actor but there isn't much for me here. i watch your videos and they help me build my acting skills A LOT. thank you sir. i'd like to hear some advice from you on acting and especially if i stand a chance as a foreigner to make it to a bigger scene

If you want to be an actor enough you will find opportunities, Algeria has its own film industry -I know this because I've worked in it - and a strong student film-network fo a small number who want to get into it. I was so excited to watch this film! Acting has given me a sensational happiness throughout my life. I am a young actor, so I definitely have a lot of room for becoming a better actor. Acting has given me a place in this world like no other job or hobby can offer, and I can't get enough of the joy and happiness I have experienced because I am able to express myself through so many different roles. Thank you for making these clips and sharing them with the world, Sir. I initially found your vids while researching how to write better dialogue. I fell in love with the nuance and truth you present. My family are half from England and the pronouncing of words and accents has always been interesting. Yes, I’ve learned lonely people can be angry. Also, people who don’t feel well (Illness) or are sad may _choose_ to turn their sadness into anger out of a desire of vengeance or through a sheer determination of sorts not to “lose” or “give in”. Thanks for kind words. Writing, which you mention doing, is, of course, as difficult as acting, with as many pitfalls. Some actors in the series SUITS had dialogue written FOR them, but most writers are crippled by actors who can't find their own truthful reason for saying every word, so writers need to make sure there is a reason. T Williams and A Miller knew nothing about women and are still performed, so all we can do is make our own creations a f**ing battle! John

Your videos make me a better actor, and it is happy! This is my new favorite channel. I'm not a big professional actor, I just do local plays, but it's refreshing to see someone humble and genuine talk about acting the way I feel about it. I love it! And becoming a better actor makes us better humans! You realized loneliness can make you angry and sometimes it takes playing the right role to make connections like that. It's wonderful! you never bore me John, I always find myself feelings brilliant and inspired after listening to your stories, and funnily enough it makes me hopeful that I can become a better actor too -- which is ultimately the true happiness isn't it :)

I am so happy you have done another video John and might I say you are getting really good at video editing. This is possibly your most editorially cognizant video and I enjoyed it the most. I loved the series you deleted also with the eccentric character. I too have felt the same way you did before you went on stage for your last show but with me it was more to do with imposter syndrome, where irrespective of your ability you feel like a fraud. This is probably a good thing, since it means you are constantly thriving to improve yourself (as you are) rather than resting on your laurels which is only relevant at that moment, not the future which is inevitable. Bravo!

You're welcome. And remember that an audience isn't interested - not for very long anyway - in an accent, - speaking clearly is more important sometimes - ! - But most of all, of course, is that we make sense of what Stoppard is saying. That is what an audience needs. I have got away doing a rather flawed Southern USA accent if I make clear what my character is really saying and just make them forget what part of the world my accent is from! After all, who cares! So true... When I have to sing something that is not quite right for me, like this last Xmas, Bach Oratorio, that is actually a bit too low, and a bit too fast as my voice doesn't go fast easily, and I work like hell and actually get it, I am a better singer and it is a real satisfaction. Thank you for all your videos. Love them, very helpful!

Well, as with all of us, as with you perhaps, it may have to be set up by myself. I've Chekhov production planned to test my production abilities, then a new play about Shakespeare, then, I guess Lear, so just hang in there and my vision of Lear as 99 year old guy with a stutter may yet see the light of day!

This video came at the right time- I've recently gotten a main role in a play for the first time and I was so excited, but in the first rehearsal I could feel myself being fake. I wanted to be real but I didn't understand the character and I felt embarrassed pretending to be something I'm not in front of these people. But having this simple goal of merely wanting to be better- not perfect, not to impress, but simply being satisfied if I become better through this experience helps me a lot!🙂

Hi, Emma. Another bit of advice I would offer is to always work out what your character wants in every scene. Even if they are simply walking across the stage it must be for a reason. If you concentrate on the character's motivation it helps you stay away from 'faking'.

Dear John, a few days ago I discovered that I am very excited about becoming an actor. I am in a totally different line of work where I lack the more creative side of life. I believe acting can offer me this. I am not sure if I will be able to become an actor but I feel this is what makes me happy. Go to classes, wikipedia all the actors you like to see how they got started, get into a decent drama course and just damned well do some acting whether it's student films, community theatre or anything that isn't just talk or you'll find yourself older still without having started. I coach, but you need to go to classes before you'd be ready for me I suspect. Just advising you, because you posted your ambition on my channel. UP to you of course. John Windsor-Cunningham

@@NewYorkActingCoach thank you John, I appreciate your advice! My work is very irregular, my days off change every month. I am trying to figure out how I could combine it with acting. I will have to move to another country in November because of my work and I don't know yet where that will be but my plan is wherever I end up to take some form of acting lessons. Right now I think it is too risky to drop my job for it and go all in on acting, on the other hand it might turn out to be impossible to combine. I will try to find a way, thank you again for your advice!

Kind of you to say, but all it takes is practice. Try reading out loud on your own, and joining groups that read books together, and doing simple plays in small companies, or just practicing to say what you need (about politics or your work) as clearly as possible. The more you do it the better you'll get. That's all I did. John Windsor-Cunningham

Thank you for the idea. There are two or three simple 'rules' which good improvisers follow, but too brief to make into a video. Helping people in any greater detail needs me to be in the room with them, or watching them on skype, so the subject doesn't work for a video. It's the sort of thing I'd explain as part of a coaching session when talking about something else. Sorry, boring answer. John (www.Windsor-Cunningham.com)

How wonderful of you to say that openly. The answer is obvious - which sounds a little rude I know, - but it's an answer which all actors need to remember, which is that we need to prepare for auditions more. . . . Even after we don't know what else to do, there is always more in the lines which we can try to understand, maybe some line is in fact a lie! But probably just that we need to find the truth in the lines more, and more. Work, work, work, eventually makes things fun. Sorry, a hard answer, I know. John Windsor-Cunningham

Oh, give yourself a break, hitting yourself won't help. Other people do enough of that. Remember the small things that you have managed to get RIGHT, that some of your lines have been clear, that some of them have been understood, that you have done some things which were not a failure. (And get on with the damned work more.) JOhn

When I was younger, I thought that being an actor was an honorable profession. Nowadays the so-called actors are people I wouldn't even want to meet. I used to 💘 love watching movies, but modern movie 🎥 🌟 stars are taken over by computers. There were such good actors -- as you John -- such as Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton.
