I'm in my mid-60's now so, I speak from experience. Save your shoulder! Build a powered helve-hammer. It's very cost effective and as you age your hammering-arm really takes a beating.

Beautiful Work!!! I love your English Wheel and Bead Roller! I can see you fabbed them yourself and I'm wanting to build my own. Maybe one day you will break down those builds. I'd love to learn about English Wheeling too. Did I say I love your English Wheel? It's the coolest I've ever seen.

Dave, LOVE the work!!! One question, I see a LOT of english wheels going for big money that CLEARLY are built to completely minimize "wiggle". Some of them are just monsterous. Your setup clearly wiggles a LOT when you are going over the biggest bumps after using the beater bag to rough out your shape. Yet, in the end your pieces look fantastic. Do you think too much is made out of trying to get an english wheel rock solid?? I have a wheel I bought years ago that wasn't all that cheap but has some wiggle. I was thinking about upgrading but, 1. I don't use it that often, 2. The wheels I'm looking at are even MORE expensive! Thoughts?

Thanks Pete. I’ve used used all kinds of English wheels, from very small light weight fabricated machines to big old cast iron ones. And in my opinion a bit of wiggle going over the big bumps isn’t an issue as long as the wiggle goes once they are flattened out. Most importantly you don’t want your frame to flex upwards when you wind up the bottom anvil. This will increase the amount of time and effort you have to put into a panel. Also if your top wheel is a small diameter (100-150mm) it will take much longer to flatten out the large bumps. And finally the top wheel and anvil need to be perfectly aligned. If they are not tracking straight it becomes extremely difficult to steer and control the panel. These are the fundamental basics that make a good English wheel. You don’t NEED a cast iron machine or something that weighs 20 tons to shape metal. If your English wheel already ticks those boxes, then just keep on using it.

@@daveplummer7644 Thank you so much for the reply Dave. I wonder if there is any way to re align the top and bottom anvils if they are out of alignment. I'm going to be in the garage later today and can't wait to check that out. I have no problem trying to "beef up" the wheel if it has upward/downward movement, I just don't want to screw it up!!
