There's a Hammer that I knew of that isn't on the registry. It was converted by AMG in Chicago. 1987 black on black. Black center monoblock wheels. Was owned by a Psychiatrist from Chicago that had a farm in southwest Michigan. I was doing some work on the farm back in the early 00's and I remember he asked me if I could wash one of the cars and he'd let me take it for a spin. I didn't know what an AMG Hammer was as I was only a young adult then. I did know what a Mercedes E class was, so I asked about the car, and he told me it was purchased and sent to AMG for the conversion and that these were built to order. I remember it having sheepskin seat covers and a 90's Alpine CD player had been installed in the car. I drove it and fell in love with it and have wanted one ever since. I have no idea what happened to the car. I never saw it again. I'm sure the gentleman is probably no longer alive, and the car may have been sold or God forbid disposed/junked. I wish I would have known better as I would have recorded the VIN number, but I had no idea just how rare these were back then. I've always wanted to get my own W124 and swap a 6.0L LS based engine into it and have a fun budget hammer. I have a W221 now that's a blast, but I'd love a W124 with a V8 and the AMG body kit in the garage next to it. Maybe one day I'll build one.

Doesn't sound fair to win the car at an extraordinary price to then have the carpet pulled from under your feet. All concerned should have been accepting of the outcome. An internet glitch can happen to anyone these days buying at auction online and you don't see the auction re-ran to passify the party that missed out.

Hammers are definitely overrated in a number of ways. Just 3 years after the Hammer the 500e would come out and it was much faster, wider, and used a newer engine based on the Hammer's engine. Plus the hammer was over twice the price. Then a year after that AMG made the e60, which had even more power, and more importantly a much better tuned power curve. Then 3 years after that even the base model W210 was faster than the 500e.

  • @huzcer

@@amazin7006 true but it's all about rarity and the history - hammer was the fastest sedan of its time and it's pre-merger amg, custom built for customers by amg. hell it was faster than the supercars of the time - higher top speed than the countach or testarossa. that wasn't the case with the 500e. there were only 30 hammers made. that's mega mega rare. that's the main reason that they are worth so much. plus "hammer" sounds cool.

John mentioned his dad had a Ferrari, so he had “some money” for sure. The price of hammers is from people born in the 1970’s that idealized cars from the 1980’s. They remember these as the first high horsepower fast sedans. Things were different and really slow back then. They’ll stay high for a couple of decades then be forgotten and prices will fall.

But half of these car buying stories revolve around dealers salivating about basically preying on someone who doesn't know the true value of something and getting them to hand it over before they find out. $761k for a W124 coupe? Jesus. One of my favourite cars, but the price people will pay to show off is insane. These cars aren't rare. They built zillions of W124s. A nice-ish but not actually that extraordinary V8 up the front and some AMG badging isn't worth $750k. I assume whoever bought it isn't going to drive it, because what a disappointment they're going to get! A nice straight six model probably drives better.

Well, at first he tried to buy it at 300.000, fully aware that it could fetch a new record. So if the seller would would have agreed to 400.000, he could have made easily a 300.000-450.000 of profit on it.

@@Heidelaffe I’m not arguing it at those prices. Jon fully committed to paying $661,000 (a then-world-record price) to basically sit on the car for a time before attempting to make money on it. When you’re the one paying more than anyone else has ever paid it makes it tough to turn a profit.

The thing with the Hammer is there are only a handful of them, literally there are, or were 13 made for the US and only 30 world wide. That was in the 80's, and so the chances of finding one was low then and now 40 years later it's even lower as they get taken off the roads. So yeah, if you bought one of the few and then just sat on it until there were even less you could probably turn it into a million dollar car quite easily, especially if you were able to hand over an amount of verified details and prove that it was the one from the internet story

TLDR : Shady dealer tries to buy car for half its value with no auction but owner is not an idiot looking to get fleeced. Car then sells for over double that offer at auction for world record price. Shady dealer actually himself bids twice his previous offer ($705k) in the auction after telling the guy not to auction but still doesn't win the car.

@@huzcer These are valid points, but I do specifically recall him saying "cars like these are such unicorns, that it's hard to even put a value on them" on that episode which let's face it in the context of a Countach turbo, is very true as like you said, there is only one in public circulation. Cars like these are only worth what someone is willing to pay so actually it really depends on the provenance of the example, spec etc. These tactics and behaviours are pretty much universal in the car trade so I think it's not really an issue since the owner didn't comply to his offers. Had he gotten the car for $400k, different story. If both the buyer AND the seller are happy with their deal, there's no issue.
