    4:33 Not the first time David Schwimmer has been pointing out the general sense of disappointment with Ross' constant divorces and breakups that was ruining the arc in his relationship with Rachel's. Along the lines of moving on from Rachel *enough* to marry someone else and then falling back in love with her again later making it weird. It's not easy being an actor and watching constantly how the producers and the writers are deconstructing your character that you have to play for ten years straight.

  • @quinnmorgendorffer8435

    I think he David couldn't see the bigger picture that his other relationships failed because it still comes back to Rachel. If your heart is unresolved your life will be also. They're relateable and they're not perfect but they belong together. They have a kid together and I think they keep coming back to one another for a reason. In the end they don't get married but commit to being a family and raising their daughter. Ross got his dream in the end. He said he wanted a daughter with Rachel named Emily and he got a different version of happiness named Emmma instead. Life is messy.

  • @Shimmery27

    I completely agree, the producers/writers are following what they see people relate to the most which is (there's always that one person you're absolutely crazy about and can't fall-out-of-love with your entire life, romantic shit if you ask me! and not a healthy mentality either.) And people actually like that.. saying Rachel is his lobster and can't see how bad the whole relationship was for both of them (Ross mostly).

    @@quinnmorgendorffer8435 David Schwimmer did see the bigger picture, because, later in 2011 he reiterated this fact again in a Telegraph interview and I quote: _"Yes: I would not have allowed myself to be persuaded to have Ross marry and divorce again. The whole arc of the relationship was weird then, because for him to be able to move on enough to marry someone else and then go back to being in love with Rachel later just went a bit too far.”_ Schwimmer was looking at Ross & Rachel from a creative/production point of view when making that statement .... and could easily/clearly see how flawed the _arc_ in their relationship was. Thanks to Ross' weird social life of course and the fact that he and Rachel weren't allowed to move on, grow and be happy with someone else for a while, before coming back together. This is why the whole Rachel/Joey thing in seasons 9-10, post-Emma, became so weird as well.

    The interesting thing about Friends is that all 6 of them were truly main characters in the fact that it was written as them being 6 individuals. No real interconnectivity, even with Ross & Monica being siblings. Ross & Monica could've not been siblings and it still would've worked. Other shows aren't like that (except maybe Seinfeld), which is one thing that made the show so powerful.

    Wow, if Mondler is being described by Matthew as having a "rocky relationship", then their relationship has t to be the healthiest 'rocky relationship' there is, on TV or anywhere. Thing is, they were still the happily married couple, but not in the typical, boring way. They were unconventional in some ways, but never dysfunctional. They went through a lot of things that would have broken up any other couple, such as infertility and maintaining a long distance romance. But they stood strong. They're not perfect, but they're perfect together. That's why I love them so much.

    4:34 Interesting to see how Matt Lauer asks the on-point and *inconvenient* question to David Schwimmer in regards to his conclusion about all those marriages and relationships that came to an end his character had to go through. Mainly because it was the right question to ask at that point in the production of the show and it is hard to disagree with what David states in regards to his on-screen romance with Jennifer. It was simply *weird* for the entire context and development of the show to see his character move on from Rachel enough to marry this other woman he barely knew for two months. Then of course later seeing Rachel falling in love with him again and him knowing it too, but still clinging on to his marriage with that other woman only for the sake of not wanting to go through two divorces before his 30th birthday that simply went too far. You can easily admit the writers and creators did a lot to show us Rachel & Ross loved each other throughout season four until season ten. A great job. However they either *never* really tried or were never able to succeed for the two characters to help each other grow and going in directions they definitely went with. This was a major issue in the show, because the on-and-off relationship was starting to get boring after season four came to an end. It explains why the *ratings* went down following this decision in season five to force the two in a platonic friendship again, seeing the magic in their relationship and what it was able to bring to the show disappear. This was perhaps the biggest disappointment to watch as a viewer back then, to see the writers and creators being either *unable* or *unwilling* to elevate the show to another level. I wonder how the show would have been or how long it would have been able to last if they had made the decision for Rachel & Ross to be *together* more often and helping each other grow between season four and ten, in addition to not letting their relationship be as dysfunctional and unhealthy as it would be.

  • @dilekben

    @dilekben

    @@dilekben Great point Dilek! The issue that remains with the final episode of Friends to this day is exactly the inorganic and hollow reunion of Ross and Rachel. It was never the same again as it was in the show's first three seasons. Friends would have been a #1 show for 7 of its 10 seasons without this constant on- and off-relationship of Ross and Rachel coming at the expense of Friends' creativity and comedy.

  • @celiasaiz3786

    @celiasaiz3786

    I totally agree! Also, if they had been together, instead of developing a relationship that got unhealthier every season, they could have worked though it, learned and show the audience how to manage toxic behaviours such as Ross's jealousy. Should it be a deal braker if a guy is that possesive? For me it would, but it doesn't have to, the only issue for me is that they don't work through it, they don't grow as a couple, they just accept that toxicity

  • @dvchel

    @dvchel

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@celiasaiz3786 Excellent point Celia. Going from season 3 into season 4 watching Friends it is exactly your point that comes to disappoint. So, besides ending up not forgiving each other for the breakup in season 3 (both equally at fault), seeing Ross being able to move on from Rachel enough to marry Emily *showed* how they didn't grew through it. Neither in season 5 or all the other seasons that came to follow. It just became too dysfunctional and unhealthy in a very unnecessary way. I mean, it wouldn't have been too hard to hire a technical adviser helping Friends to sort out the issues in the arc of Ross and Rachel's relationship. It was just sloppy. Then, it also disappointingly led to the eventual fallout from the public towards the Rachel/Joey fling. :/

  • @_adil-

    @@dvchel I think the writers and creators got heavily influenced by the fact that Ross and Rachel were drawing in rating and viewership so they just wanted to exploit them. It was kinda sad to see Ross and Rachel both having that amount of chemistry get absolutely ridiculed by the writers. No wonder in BTS you could see David feel very sad about his character and even Jennifer wanted Ross and Rachel to end up sooner. They could've easily given us so many amazing moments with Ross and Rachel as a couple. Instead of Joey and Rachel , they should have had showed us Ross and Rachel growing up and bonding over Emma and realising that they were always in love and are ready to let go off their immaturity. Even in different seasons u could see certain moments where they describe each other in certain ways that makes u wonder wtf they aren't together. I would have loved a wedding in S10 instead of the rushed ending , tho it's still nice and iconic. The wedding would've been even better since it'd be cementing both Ross and Rachels history. Things being said , Ross and Rachel will have a special place in my heart only cause of the chemistry of David and Jennifer. S1-S3(mid) their relationship was so pure and fairytale like it was hard to not fall in love with them. I didn't hate them but it bumped me out that they should have gotten back sooner.

    tbh u can't put David in this picture. For alot of fans he was the best actor on the show and since he couldn't deal with fame , him not being in the limelight is pretty understandable. Le Blanc looked the most confident out of the guys, he was more into expanding his career and went on to win a Golden Globe too.

    Knowing now what Laeur was doing behind the scenes and his horrible reputation …I think all 3 actors were protective of their female co-stars, and were not as warm towards Laeur in this interview. I’m getting the vibe that they were not fond of him. The way Matt Laeur referred to the ladies also as “things”, I’m sure that didn’t bode well. Plus Schwimmer is very active in bringing awareness to harassment in the workplace so I don’t think he liked Laeur. He even seemed uncomfortable on being called singled out on his disdain for his privacy being invaded by overzealous fans. His facial reaction was “why would you bring that up?”, but he was gracious in his response, and made sure that he reiterated he is appreciative of his fans, but it can be difficult in the limelight. Either way, Laeur is a punk. =/

    @alex unger When did Phoebe commit incest? If you mean when she gave birth to her brother’s twins, it wasn’t incest because they didn’t have sex. She was impregnated by in-vitro methods. The doctors took Alice’s eggs and Frank’s sperm, and put them in a petri dish so that the sperm could fertilize the eggs, creating embryos. Then a doctor inserted the embryos up Phoebe’s vagina and into her uterus, making her pregnant.
